[0:00] RV coons and associations from the
[0:02] opportunity of America.
[0:04] We have a duty to confront this poverty
[0:06] with bold action.
[0:08] So let us restore all that we have
[0:10] cherished from yesterday and let us rise
[0:12] above the legacy of inequality.
[0:15] When the streets are rebuilt, there
[0:18] should be many new businesses, including
[0:19] minorityowned businesses, along those
[0:21] streets.
[0:23] Well, the president's claim that racism
[0:26] causes poverty was a jarring departure
[0:28] from conservative doctrine. Republican
[0:30] presidents typically don't believe
[0:31] things like that, much less say them out
[0:32] loud. But did anyone even notice what he
[0:35] said? And will the president's new
[0:36] position buy him any goodwill from black
[0:38] voters? To answer these questions and
[0:40] many others, we welcome Congresswoman
[0:41] Sheila Jackson Lee, who represents the
[0:43] 18th district of Houston, Texas, which
[0:45] is now home to some 125,000 Katrina
[0:48] evacuees. Congresswoman, thanks for
[0:50] coming on.
[0:51] >> Thank you for having me.
[0:52] >> Here's what I don't understand. And the
[0:53] president comes out, supports
[0:54] affirmative action as he has for a
[0:56] number of years now, and comes out and
[0:58] says, "Look, poverty causes or racism
[1:01] causes poverty. People are poor because
[1:02] they're discriminated against. This is a
[1:04] central tenant of American liberalism.
[1:06] Why does he get so little black
[1:08] support?"
[1:10] Well, the president had to speak last
[1:12] night to the obvious, Tucker. And might
[1:13] I say that uh his passion, his
[1:16] compassion was appreciated and I believe
[1:19] uh welcomed albeit that this is not a
[1:22] time to take polling numbers or to worry
