[0:02] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:07] with Connie Chung in New York and Dan
[0:10] Rather in Haiti.
[0:13] Good evening from the Haitian capital of
[0:15] Porta Prince where news has arrived that
[0:18] President Clinton is giving Haitian
[0:20] military leaders one last chance to step
[0:23] down and leave without a fight. As we
[0:26] first reported on the CBS Evening News
[0:27] earlier this week, President Clinton has
[0:29] had in mind for a number of days the
[0:31] idea of sending down at the last
[0:34] possible moment a high level delegation
[0:36] to give a last offer, at least have a
[0:38] last round of talks with the Haitian
[0:40] generals, even as the president mounted
[0:42] a US-led military force just offshore.
[0:46] Correspondent Rita Bravery is live at
[0:48] the White House with tonight's late
[0:50] breaking developments.
[0:52] >> That's right, Dan. Just a short while
[0:54] ago, the White House announced that the
[0:55] president has appointed a highlevel
[0:57] delegation to make one last ditch effort
[1:00] to get Hades military leaders to step
[1:02] aside peaceibly. The delegation will
[1:05] include former President Jimmy Carter,
[1:07] who was successful in breaking the
[1:08] stalemate with North Korea. Senator Sam
[1:11] Nun, chairman of the Senate Armed
[1:12] Services Committee, and former chairman
[1:14] of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
[1:16] Powell. National Security Adviser
[1:19] Anthony Lake explained the trip.
[1:22] The purpose of the trip is to conduct
[1:25] discussions with the de facto Haitian
[1:27] leadership within the framework of the
[1:30] goals already established by President
[1:33] Clinton and the UN Security Council.
[1:36] >> The White House insisted that the only
[1:38] thing that will be discussed
