[0:07] In the forecast, the death toll is
[0:09] rising in Taiwan, hit today by a
[0:12] powerful earthquake. And would seat
[0:14] belts protect the children on this bus?
[0:17] What government safety experts say may
[0:20] surprise you.
[0:24] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:28] with Dan Rather reporting from [music]
[0:30] CBS News headquarters in New York.
[0:34] Good evening. Much of North Carolina's
[0:36] in a state of paralysis tonight under an
[0:38] ocean of floodwaters from gone but never
[0:41] forgotten Hurricane Floyd. The death
[0:43] toll is at least 34. At least 1,500

[1:25] >> In city after city, from Cape Fear to
[1:27] Rocky Mount, homes have become islands.
[1:30] And beneath the water's edge, many are
[1:32] now tombs.
[1:33] >> My trail and everything in it, I know
[1:35] it's gone cuz you can't even see the top
[1:37] of it. In hard-hit Edgeham County, where
[1:40] the river is still 20 ft above flood
[1:42] level, eight members of one family
[1:44] drowned when their boat overturned. They
[1:46] were trying to leave their house. 11
