[0:00] Week nights at 6.
[0:02] >> Just what's beyond this horizon? If a
[0:06] ground war begins, and all indications
[0:08] are that it could happen soon, what
[0:11] Iraqi defenses await allied soldiers.
[0:14] We'll show you what the GIS in the
[0:16] trenches might find when they cross that
[0:19] line.
[0:27] This is ABC News Night Line reporting
[0:30] from Washington with the latest on the
[0:32] Gulf War. Ted Cppel.
[0:35] >> Within a week or so, perhaps even within
[0:38] the next day, we will have the answers
[0:40] to many of the questions that now
[0:41] trouble us. We will know the specifics
[0:44] of the Soviet peace proposal and Saddam
[0:46] Hussein's response to it. Even more to
[0:49] the point, we will know whether both the
[0:51] proposal and the reply will have been
[0:52] acceptable to the president of the
[0:54] United States or whether he will
[0:56] determine that a ground war was simply
[0:58] unavoidable. By next week at this time,
[1:01] the questions which hang so heavily over
[1:03] us tonight will have been displaced by
[1:06] other perhaps even more troublesome
[1:07] ones. But for the moment, it is the
[1:10] prospect or the possible avoidance of
[1:12] that land war that still captures our
[1:14] attention. That then will be the main
[1:17] focus of our broadcast this evening. A
[1:19] closer look at what a land war would
[1:21] entail. We begin though with a summary
[1:24] by Nightline correspondent Jeff
[1:26] Greenfield of the unanswered questions
[1:28] that now lie before us. The whole point
[1:32] of a newscast is to tell you what we
[1:34] know or think we know about what's going
[1:36] on in the world. Sometimes we can sound
[1:38] very confident about this. You give us
[1:41] 22 minutes, we'll give you the world,
