[0:00] Weather team. Thanks for making News

[0:01] Channel 5 number one all day yesterday.

[0:07] >> Tonight after clinching the Democratic

[0:09] nomination, Barack Obama takes an early

[0:11] lead in the polls.

[0:13] >> Did you ever think you'd see this day?

[0:15] >> And Republican John McCain wastes no

[0:17] time challenging Obama to debate.

[0:20] I'm Katie Couric. Also tonight, doctors

[0:22] insist there's no link between childhood

[0:24] vaccines and autism, but

[0:27] don't tell that to these parents.

[0:30] >> Stop poisoning our children.

[0:32] Too many.

[0:33] >> And he wants desperately to win the

[0:35] triple crown. It could be the last

[0:38] victory his young son ever sees.

[0:46] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Katie

[0:49] Couric.

[0:52] >> Good evening, everyone. The battle for

[0:53] the White House is moving into a new

[0:55] phase now that both parties have their

[0:57] presumptive nominees. Five months from

[1:00] today, on November 4th, voters will

[1:02] choose John McCain or Barack Obama to be

[1:05] the next president. After clinching the

[1:07] Democratic nomination last night, Obama

[1:09] is now the front-runner. A CBS News poll

[1:11] of registered voters shows him leading

[1:13] McCain by six points. Here in New York

[1:16] today, I talked one-on-one with Senator

[1:18] Obama, and I asked him if he'd consider

[1:20] picking Hillary Clinton as his running

[1:22] mate.

[1:24] Senator Obama, first of all,

[1:25] congratulations.

[1:26] >> much.

[1:27] >> In our latest poll, 59% of Democratic

[1:30] primary voters, including 46% of your

[1:33] voters, think you should select Senator

[1:36] Clinton to be your running mate. So, in

[1:38] the spirit of Kennedy picking Johnson

[1:40] and Reagan choosing Bush, why not pick

[1:43] Senator Clinton?
