[0:00] This is the CBS Evening News with Bob
[0:03] Sheaffer.
[0:05] >> Good evening. Bob is off tonight. The
[0:07] dispute between the United States and
[0:09] North Korea over the Korean nuclear
[0:11] program flared up again today with
[0:13] international talks on the issue stalled
[0:15] for months. US officials say the Koreans
[0:18] are preparing to test launch a long
[0:20] range missile that could reach
[0:22] California. The officials say the Bush
[0:24] administration is very concerned about
[0:26] this and it has put out a warning to the
[0:28] communist government in Pyang. CBS News
[0:31] national security correspondent David
[0:33] Martin has our report.
[0:36] >> This was the last time North Korea
[0:38] tested a missile with a long enough
[0:40] range to reach the westernmost part of
[0:42] the United States. That was nearly 8
[0:44] years ago. But now US intelligence has
[0:47] detected preparations for another test
[0:49] which could come as early as this
[0:51] weekend. And today, the State Department
[0:53] warned North Korea not to do it.
[0:55] >> A missile launch would be a provocative
[0:57] act that is not in their interest and
[0:59] will further isolate them from the
[1:01] world.
[1:01] >> The test in 1998 came as a shock because
[1:04] US intelligence had not realized North
[1:06] Korea was capable of launching a missile
[1:08] that could reach the Hawaiian Islands.
[1:11] Eight years later, the North Koreans are
[1:13] believed to have enough plutonium to
[1:14] build about eight nuclear weapons and a
[1:17] missile that can reach all the way to
[1:18] the west coast of the United States.
[1:20] There is nothing more lethal than a
[1:23] country like North Korea having a long
[1:26] range intercontinental ballistic missile
