[0:00] Tom Brokaw.
[0:03] Good evening on a night when the most
[0:04] serious terrorist alert since 9/11
[0:06] remains in effect, California still is
[0:08] measuring the damaging effect of a
[0:10] significant earthquake along the Central
[0:12] Coast. We are covering both stories
[0:14] tonight. We're going to begin with the
[0:15] elevation of the terror alert from
[0:17] yellow to orange and fresh worries about
[0:19] Al-Qaeda and air travel. The Bush
[0:22] administration is sending out a mixed
[0:23] signals saying yes, the threat is
[0:25] serious, but go about your business.
[0:28] We're reporting on all the ramifications
[0:30] of this tonight. We're going to begin
[0:32] with NBC Jim Miklaszewski at the
[0:34] Pentagon. Jim. Tom, US officials tell
[0:37] NBC News this elevated threat alert will
[0:39] remain at the higher level at least

[0:44] indication of just how seriously US
[0:46] government is taking this latest threat.
[0:50] Anti-aircraft missile batteries going up
[0:52] around Washington DC today, prepared to
[0:55] shoot down any planes that pose a
[0:56] threat. In fact, US intelligence reports
[0:59] warn Al-Qaeda is actively planning to
[1:02] use passenger planes again to attack US
[1:05] targets.
[1:06] They're always looking
[1:08] one to return to methods that they've
[1:12] used successfully before. And we know
[1:14] tragically they turned uh
[1:16] four planes into missiles. But there's a
[1:18] new fear over who may be flying any
[1:21] suicide planes. US officials tell NBC
[1:24] News intelligence indicates Al-Qaeda
[1:26] operatives possibly trained and licensed
[1:29] to fly airliners may now be pilots of
[1:32] some foreign airlines prepared to carry
[1:34] out suicide attacks. Expert
