[0:05] >> From ABC, this is a special edition of
[0:08] World News Tonight [music] with Peter
[0:09] Jennings.
[0:10] >> Good evening. Day 12 of the war and a
[0:12] very upbeat appraisal from the military
[0:14] today. In 12 days, according to the
[0:16] Pentagon this afternoon, only 21
[0:18] American casualties and the Iraqi Air
[0:21] Force out of the fight almost entirely.
[0:23] The Pentagon said this afternoon that 80
[0:25] Iraqi aircraft, many of them top of the
[0:27] line in their class, have now fled
[0:29] across the border to Iran.
[0:31] And the US High Command in Saudi Arabia
[0:33] also believes that its bombing attack of
[0:35] the night before last has cut off the
[0:38] oil that was pouring into the Persian
[0:40] Gulf from occupied Kuwait. Our first
[0:43] report is from ABC's Bob Zelnick.
[0:46] >> Publicly, Pentagon officials are not
[0:48] challenging Iran's explanation for the
[0:50] arrival of so many Iraqi planes.
[0:52] >> Well, they've already publicly announced
[0:54] out of Iran that these are are defecting
[0:56] aircraft.
[0:57] >> But privately, officials say it probably
[0:59] represents an effort either by Saddam
[1:01] Hussein or his senior Air Force
[1:02] officials to save Iraq's best aircraft
[1:05] from successful allied attacks against
[1:07] the bunkers in which many of the planes
[1:09] have been kept.
[1:10] >> Well, we are having great success in the
[1:13] bunker program. I think that's what's
[1:14] behind his moving those high-priced
[1:16] airplanes.
[1:17] >> The departure of so many Iraqi planes
[1:20] makes less important continuing allied
[1:22] efforts to destroy Iraqi runways and
[1:24] Iraqi efforts to repair them. While
[1:27] attacks on Iraqi radar have reduced the
[1:29] threat posed by surface-to
