[0:24] It's a new beginning for America. We
[0:27] have a new president. This is a special
[0:30] inauguration day edition of the CBS
[0:32] Evening News. Good evening from our
[0:35] nation's capital. Dan Rather reporting
[0:36] from Capitol Hill in Washington DC.
[0:39] George Walker Bush of Texas was sworn in
[0:41] at noon today as the 43rd president of
[0:44] these United States just minutes after
[0:46] Dick Cheney took the oath as vice
[0:48] president. In his inaugural address,
[0:50] President Bush pledged to quote, "Build
[0:52] a single nation of justice and
[0:55] opportunity." and he called on Americans
[0:57] to be citizens, not
[1:00] spectators. Under a bone chilling rain,
[1:03] the new president began a day steeped in
[1:05] tradition. He and Mrs. Bush attended
[1:08] church, then stopped at the White House
[1:10] for a courtesy call on President and
[1:11] Mrs. Clinton. Together, Mr. Clinton and
[1:14] Mr. Bush departed the White House for
[1:16] the riot up Capitol Hill. I, George
[1:18] Walker Bush, do solemnly swear. Mr. Bush
[1:21] took his oath of office with his hand on
[1:22] the same Bible his father, former
[1:25] President Bush, chose for his
[1:26] inauguration and the same Bible George
[1:29] Washington used at the very first
[1:31] inaugural in
[1:32] 1789. Mr. Bush's speech, expected to be
[1:35] short, took just 14 minutes. In it, he
[1:38] called for civility, compassion, and
[1:41] what he called a shared American
[1:43] promise. Our unity, our union is a
[1:47] serious work of leaders and citizens and
[1:50] every
[1:51] generation. And this is my solemn
[1:54] pledge. I will work to build a single
[1:57] nation of justice and opportunity. Then
[2:01] in another inaugural tradition, the new
[2:03] president escorted now
