[0:02] US airlines getting nowhere fast. They

[0:05] promised more on-time flights and better

[0:08] service. So, why are things getting

[0:10] worse?

[0:12] Get ready for the summertime browns.

[0:14] Power supplies are pushed to the limit.

[0:18] An ocean view now may mean trouble

[0:21] ahead.

[0:22] More of the coast will soon be clear.

[0:26] And a sharper focus on the risks of

[0:29] laser eye surgery.

[0:35] This is the CBS Evening News with Dan

[0:39] Rather reporting from CBS News

[0:41] headquarters in New York.

[0:43] Good evening. Surviving the summer of

[0:45] 2000. Tonight, more bad news about

[0:48] traveling by air and staying powered up

[0:51] on the ground. Both systems are

[0:53] stretched to the limit. And that's on

[0:55] top of high summer prices at the

[0:57] gasoline pump. First, about the airlines

[1:00] and their promises to improve service

[1:02] and cut delays. CBS's Bob Orr reports

[1:05] those promises fly in the face of the

[1:09] Six months after airlines promised

[1:11] passengers that air travel would get

[1:13] better, it seems to be getting worse.

[1:16] Complaints and delays are mounting.

[1:17] Flying, for the most part, remains a

[1:19] major hassle.

[1:21] If they're making a big push on customer

[1:22] service, it comes as a surprise to me.

[1:25] New numbers obtained by CBS News show

[1:27] that flight delays for the first five

[1:29] months of this year were up more than

[1:30] 11% over last year's record-setting pace

[1:34] and up a whopping 76 and 1/2% over 1997.

[1:38] Last week, we were delayed by about an

[1:39] hour and a half. They never announced

[1:41] the reason.

[1:42] His airline should have provided that

[1:43] information through a pledge made last

[1:45] December to meet customers' demands.
