[0:01] We're live from the East Bank Escalon

[0:02] >> tomorrow on AM Northwest,

[0:07] >> August 14th, 2001.

[0:11] >> 23 boats have tried to break this record

[0:14] and failed.

[0:15] >> The reason why the record is tough is

[0:17] it. It's uh 3,000 mi of some of the

[0:21] harshest ocean in the world.

[0:25] >> This boat is bigger and faster than any

[0:28] other.

[0:29] This is risky stuff. I mean, we're we're

[0:32] going to go as fast as we can for the

[0:34] next five days. So, when you push it

[0:37] that hard, you know, it's a lot of time

[0:38] for somebody to get hurt.

[0:40] >> But speed and size don't protect against

[0:44] disaster.

[0:45] >> It's like boom. And right away looked

[0:49] forward and the bow started peeling

[0:51] away.

[0:52] >> If this collaps, you go inside the boat.

[0:54] Okay.

[0:55] >> You guys put harnesses on. You fall in

[0:56] the water, we can't come get you.

[0:58] Tonight, rough seas, the quest to break

[1:02] the transatlantic crossing record.

[1:05] [Applause]

[1:08] From ABC News,

[1:12] this is Night Line

[1:15] reporting from Washington, Ted CP.

[1:19] At the risk of stating the obvious, some

[1:21] world records survive for a reason. And

[1:24] one of the most enduring world records

[1:26] left is that of 6 days, 13 hours, 3

[1:29] minutes, and 32 seconds, which is how

[1:32] long it took back in June of 1990 to

[1:36] sail from the Ambrose Lighthouse off the

[1:38] coast of New Jersey to Lizard Point at

[1:41] the southwestern edge of Cornwall on the

[1:43] coast of England. Our story tonight

[1:45] deals with the latest effort to break

[1:47] that record. An effort which began last

[1:50] Thursday afternoon. The contender, a

[1:53] Maxi catamaran team adventure with a

[1:56] 15-man crew aboard. 13 of them engaged

[1:59] in sailing the boat.
