[0:03] to any other matters as the convention
[0:06] may deem advisable.
[0:19] Now, I have the distinct honor
[0:23] to present a person who represents the
[0:26] new Democratic Party of the 1970s
[0:29] as well as anyone in America.
[0:33] He is a young man.
[0:35] He is a United States Senator.
[0:38] He was elected in 1970
[0:41] because he went to the people,
[0:43] listened to what they had to say,
[0:46] made their message his message, and won.
[0:52] He won against the biggest guns the
[0:54] White House could fire against him,
[0:57] including Spiro Agnew,
[1:01] and President Nixon himself, who made
[1:03] four campaign stops against him in
[1:06] Florida,
[1:08] not counting stopovers in Key Biscayne.
[1:12] He won by walking the thousand-mile from
[1:15] the tip of Florida
[1:17] to its southern tip,
[1:19] listening to the people.
[1:21] I now present the Honorable Lawton
[1:24] Chiles, Democratic Senator from the
[1:27] great state of Florida.
[1:31] This will be the official welcoming
[1:33] address from the state of Florida by
[1:34] this 42-year-old Senator
[1:37] from Lakeland, Florida.
[1:40] Uh the keynote speech will be given by
[1:42] the state's governor tomorrow night,
[1:44] Reuben Askew.
[1:54] Since I learned I'd been selected to
[1:56] make the welcoming talk
[1:58] on behalf of the great state of Florida.
[2:01] I've been thinking about how it happened
[2:03] that I was given this opportunity.
[2:06] Two years ago tonight, I was just
[2:09] halfway through my walk from one end of
[2:11] Florida to the other.
[2:13] And the first statewide poll showed only
[2:15] that 5% of the people recognized my
[2:17] name.
[2:19] I had no money in a race that required a
[2:21] million-dollar state,
[2:23] and I was running against uh a couple of
[2:25] millionaires and a former governor in
