[0:00] CBS News special report.

[0:07] Good evening.

[0:08] 3 months ago today, Ronald Reagan was

[0:10] sworn into office as president of the

[0:12] United States.

[0:13] Tonight, in the first of two broadcasts,

[0:15] CBS News will take a look at how he's

[0:17] doing.

[0:18] He's not here just to govern the country

[0:20] a little better than the last fellow.

[0:22] He's here to do some things, to

[0:24] accomplish some things, to get the

[0:26] country's attention riveted on his

[0:29] objective, such as the economic recovery

[0:30] program. And I he feels that he's

[0:32] achieving this, and that's why he enjoys

[0:34] the work. I think Ronald Reagan may

[0:35] truly intend not to harm the truly

[0:37] needy. But we get into a matter of

[0:39] definition, and I'm convinced that his

[0:41] definition is a definition that would

[0:43] indeed harm some truly needy people. I

[0:46] don't happen to agree with the substance

[0:47] of what he's doing.

[0:49] But in terms of the way in which he's

[0:51] doing it, I think he's done it

[0:52] brilliantly. It's been hectic, and it's

[0:54] been a very rapid pace, and I think

[0:56] we've accomplished major changes in a

[0:58] very short period of time.

[1:00] I, Ronald Reagan, do solemnly swear I,

[1:03] Ronald Reagan, do solemnly swear that I

[1:05] will faithfully execute the office of

[1:08] President of the United States. That I

[1:10] will faithfully execute the office of

[1:12] President of the United States. And

[1:14] will, to the best of my ability And

[1:16] will, to the best of my ability

[1:18] preserve, protect, and defend

[1:21] preserve, protect, and defend the

[1:24] Constitution of the United States. The

[1:26] Constitution of the United States. So

[1:28] help you, God.

[1:29] So help me, God.
