[0:03] From CBS News Convention Headquarters in
[0:05] Miami Beach, this is the CBS Evening
[0:08] News with Walter Cronkite and Charles
[0:11] Collingwood in New York. And in Miami
[0:13] Beach, Eric Sevareid, Daniel Schorr, Ike
[0:16] Pappas, Bill Plante in Milwaukee, and
[0:19] Robert Pierpoint at the White House.
[0:21] >> Good evening. There was another
[0:23] hijacking today. This time it was a
[0:26] United Airlines jet in Reno, Nevada, and
[0:28] one of the more bizarre hijackings yet.
[0:31] Passengers were boarding when a
[0:32] middle-aged man rode up on a bicycle, a

[1:01] diapers, a nylon rope, three
[1:03] flashlights, 20 boxes of sleeping pills,
[1:05] handcuffs, cigarettes, sandwiches, and
[1:08] smelling salts. He also demanded that
[1:10] airline officials read a political
[1:12] statement outlining a conspiracy to blow
[1:15] up United planes until the war in
[1:18] Vietnam is ended.
[1:23] >> We have selected this airline
[1:25] as a major contributor to contributor to
[1:28] the war effort
[1:30] based on profits and greed.
[1:33] We intend to reverse your course by
[1:35] destruction of this aircraft
[1:38] and others of your fleet unless you
[1:41] cooperate.
[1:42] >> The hijacker had demanded pa
