[0:04] this is the CBS Evening News with Morton

[0:07] Dean

[0:08] good evening will taxes be cut when

[0:11] Jimmy Carter takes over as president

[0:12] today the answer seem more like a yes

[0:15] than a maybe the more positive

[0:17] indication came from Bert Lance the

[0:19] banker chosen by Mr Carter to become

[0:21] director of The Office of Management and

[0:23] budget Lance was interviewed on Face the

[0:25] Nation George Herman reports

[0:29] Lance an old friend of Carter showed the

[0:31] self-confidence of the new

[0:32] Administration by agreeing to be

[0:34] interviewed before his Senate

[0:35] confirmation in Washington that's

[0:37] usually a No-No but for the six foot

[0:40] five inch millionaire from Georgia they

[0:42] don't seem to be many no-nos he

[0:44] acknowledged that his boss the

[0:46] president-elect hasn't announced whether

[0:47] there'll be a tax cut but he himself

[0:49] under questioning when a stepfather than

[0:51] his boss the idea of a tax cut that

[0:54] could well be part of a program or

[0:56] phased into two or three different areas

[1:00] in my opinion well it's more than

[1:01] significant isn't it I mean it's true

[1:03] it's almost

[1:06] the choices are so limited that I think

[1:08] that you have to consider that as a as a

[1:10] almost a certainty the budget director

[1:13] designate hinted that he does not favor

[1:15] massive federal employment programs and

[1:17] he sounded a conservative note on

[1:19] Governor Carter's goal of reducing

[1:21] unemployment by one and a half

[1:22] percentage points next year

[1:24] I doubt from a practical standpoint and

[1:27] we're going to be able to accomplish

[1:28] that in 1977. I think it's going to be

[1:31] very very difficu
