[0:00] This morning on Early Today, act of war,
[0:03] Israel's Prime Minister vows a painful
[0:06] response to Hezbollah guerrilla attacks
[0:08] on Israel's northern border with
[0:10] Lebanon.
[0:11] Train of terror, the death toll
[0:13] continues to rise after eight bombs
[0:15] explode on a packed commuter train in
[0:17] India. And rush hour scramble, hundreds
[0:21] rush to escape smoke and flames after a
[0:24] Chicago train jumps the tracks.
[0:28] This is Early Today for Wednesday, July
[0:31] 12th, 2006.
[0:34] And good morning to you. Welcome to our
[0:36] viewers across the nation, including the
[0:38] Pacific time zone. I'm Christine
[0:40] Johnson, and today we begin with
[0:42] tensions reaching a fever pitch in the
[0:44] Middle East. Israeli ground troops have
[0:47] crossed into the Lebanese border in
[0:49] search of two soldiers kidnapped
[0:51] overnight by Hezbollah guerrillas. Now,
[0:53] NBC's Richard Engel is in Gaza. He will
[0:56] join us with the very latest in just a
[0:58] few moments. But in the meantime, in
[1:00] India, the focus is on tracking down
[1:03] those responsible for eight explosions
[1:05] aboard commuter trains yesterday.
[1:08] According to police in India, the toll
[1:10] at this hour stands at 190 killed and
[1:13] 625 injured in the blasts. The bombs are
[1:17] believed to have been hidden in overhead
[1:19] luggage racks aboard seven trains
[1:21] traveling during evening rush hour in
[1:23] Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay.
[1:27] Police suspect militants with ties to
[1:29] Al-Qaeda of carrying out the attacks,
[1:31] though no group has claimed
[1:32] responsibility. President Bush called
[1:35] the bombings vicious, saying the blast
[1:37] serve as a reminder that the fight
[1:39] against terror is a global endeavor.
[1:42] Back here in the US, parts of Chicago's
[1:45] metro system remain closed this morning
[1:47] after a subway train derailed and caught
[1:50] fire during Tuesday's evening rush hour
[1:52] commute. Officials say one of the cars
[1:55] jumped the tracks and caused sparks,
[1:57] which then ignited material that filled
[2:00] the subway tunnel with thick black
[2:02] smoke. Hundreds of soot-covered
[2:04] commuters had to be evacuated within
[2:06] minutes, and passengers described the
[2:09] harrowing experience.
[2:12] The rear end fishtailed. It was like
[2:14] derailed, and that's when I think they
[2:15] hit the third rail. I don't know, cuz
[2:17] then there was more flashes, and that's
[2:18] when the smoke came like crazy. It was
[2:21] scary. We just didn't know what was
[2:22] going on, and we didn't know
[2:25] We didn't I mean, the smoke was getting
[2:26] thicker, so we didn't know which way to
[2:27] go. We walked through about 600 ft of
[2:30] tunnel that was just engulfed with
[2:31] smoke. You couldn't see 5 ft in front of
[2:32] us.
[2:34] More than 150 people were taken to area
[2:36] hospitals, and most were treated for
[2:38] smoke inhalation. Authorities say there
[2:40] are no signs of terrorism or foul play.
[2:44] In a major reversal of its policy in the
[2:46] war on terror, the Bush administration
[2:48] now acknowledges that all detainees in
[2:51] US custody have legal rights. A
[2:53] statement issued by the Department of
[2:55] Defense recognizes terror suspects in
[2:57] military custody will now be afforded
[2:59] certain legal rights under the Geneva
[3:01] Conventions. The Pentagon is currently
[3:04] holding about 1,000 terror detainees
[3:06] worldwide, including 450 at Guantanamo
[3:09] Bay. Now, the reversal follows a Supreme
[3:12] Court decision 2 weeks ago that struck
[3:14] down the administration's use of
[3:15] military tribunals for trying terror
[3:18] suspects. And the announcement came on
[3:20] the same day the Senate began hearings
[3:22] on how to go about bringing terror
[3:24] detainees to trial. Senators on the
[3:26] Judiciary Committee warned the
[3:28] administration that Congress, not the
[3:30] White House, will be citing what form
[3:33] those trials take. Columnist Robert
[3:35] Novak is revealing who he says are his
[3:38] two confirming sources in the CIA leak
[3:41] case, but he still refuses to identify
[3:44] his primary source. Novak named the top
[3:47] presidential adviser Karl Rove and
[3:49] former CIA spokesperson Bill Harlow, who
[3:51] is now an NBC News analyst.
[3:54] But Novak admits both Rove and Harlow
[3:56] have a different recollection. Novak
[3:58] also admits for the first time he
[4:00] cooperated in the CIA leak
[4:03] investigation. And now we want to return
[4:05] to that story that we told you at the
[4:06] top of the hour where tensions are
[4:07] rising between Israel and Lebanon.
[4:09] Israel has now entered into Lebanon
[4:11] territory. NBC's Richard Engel is in
[4:14] Gaza with the very latest. Richard, what
[4:15] can you tell us?
[4:18] Good morning, Christine. Israel is now
[4:20] facing a war on two fronts. One here in
[4:23] the Gaza Strip where air strikes
[4:25] continue, the other in southern Lebanon.
[4:28] That began this morning when Hezbollah
[4:30] launched an attack on an Israeli army
[4:32] patrol along the Israel-Lebanon border.
[4:36] Three Israeli soldiers were killed in
[4:38] that assault. Two others were taken
[4:40] hostage. Then Israeli troops went in
[4:43] reinforcements, that their vehicle hit a
[4:46] land mine. Four more Israeli soldiers
[4:49] were killed. The Israeli Prime Minister
[4:51] is calling this act an act of war, not
[4:53] an act of terrorism. Reserve troops in
[4:55] Israel have been called up. People along
[4:58] the border, Israelis living in that
[5:00] border area, have been ordered to into
[5:02] shelters. There have been Israeli air
[5:03] strikes continuing all morning into
[5:06] South Lebanon. Hezbollah says that it
[5:08] has taken these two Israeli soldiers to
[5:10] a safe area. The Israeli cabinet is
[5:13] expected to meet tonight to discuss
[5:15] further measures and promises a very,
[5:18] quote, deep and painful response. Israel
[5:21] says that the Lebanese government bears
[5:23] the full responsibility for what
[5:24] happened because Hezbollah is an active
[5:26] participant in the Lebanese government.
[5:28] Christine?
[5:29] All right, Richard Engel live in Gaza
[5:31] City. Thanks, Richard. It's a developing
[5:33] story, of course, that we'll be
[5:34] following for you throughout the day, so
[5:35] do stay tuned right here to this NBC
[5:37] station for the latest. Right now, let's
[5:39] shift gears a little bit, get a check at
[5:40] your regional and national weather
[5:42] forecast. Jeff Van Zandt is in for that
[5:43] this morning. Well, good morning,
[5:45] Christine. Good morning, everyone. We
[5:46] have some showers that could sneak by
[5:49] into the northwest today and some cooler
[5:51] temperatures, some 60s in the forecast.
[5:53] Otherwise, we are dealing with a lot of
[5:55] heat in the southwest and more high fire
[5:57] dangers. Over 15 fires continue to burn
[6:00] in the west. Here's a look at our
[6:01] national map, and you can see no
[6:03] raindrops, unfortunately, in the
[6:05] southwest, especially for California.
[6:07] You could use it, but as many of you
[6:08] know that live in California, this is
[6:10] the dry time of the year, so don't
[6:12] really hope on too many raindrops to uh
[6:14] help out the fire situation. And there's
[6:16] that weak system moving into the
[6:18] northwest that could spread a few
[6:19] showers there uh throughout Seattle as
[6:21] we head through today. And if you're
[6:23] traveling to the northeast, any of the
[6:24] major cities, New York, DC, Boston,
[6:27] Philadelphia, watch out for some strong
[6:28] thunderstorms this afternoon that could
[6:31] certainly delay your flights. Also for
[6:33] southern Indiana, Ohio, also uh right
[6:36] around the uh Tennessee Valley, looking
[6:38] for those storms to possibly be strong.
[6:40] Heat and humidity for the east, very
[6:42] warm, some of the hottest temperatures
[6:43] of the year through the central US, 88
[6:46] in Minneapolis, but throughout Pierre,
[6:48] uh much of North and South Dakota,
[6:49] temperatures in the triple digits, 113
[6:51] in Phoenix, 87 in Sacramento. And where
[6:53] do we start off this morning? Of course,
[6:55] mild to warm here in the deserts, 84 in
[6:58] Vegas, 94 in Phoenix, and a good mix of
[7:00] 50s and 60s from the coastline to the
[7:02] interior valleys. That's a look at your
[7:04] national forecast. Now, here's the
[7:05] weather where you are.
[7:08] All right, Lake Havasu, Arizona, some
[7:10] sun, some clouds, 80°. Reno, Nevada,
[7:13] sunny skies, 91° and in San Francisco,
[7:17] some sun, some clouds and the upper 60s.
[7:23] That's your national forecast,
[7:25] Christine. Back to you. All right, Jeff,
[7:26] thanks so much. Well, the army considers
[7:28] cutting ties with Halliburton, and GM
[7:31] ponders a joint partnership. We'll have
[7:33] your early morning business headlines
[7:35] straight ahead. Plus, Keith Richards
[7:37] finally puts the rumors to rest about
[7:39] that big bump on his head.
[7:43] An exciting finish in the All-Star game
[7:45] and a half-court shot you've got to see
[7:46] to believe. You're watching Early Today.

[9:56] Welcome back to Early Today. I'm
[9:58] Christine Johnson. Here now some of your
[10:00] top headlines this morning. Israeli
[10:02] Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is calling an
[10:05] attack by Hezbollah guerrillas this
[10:06] morning an act of war. Israel has called
[10:10] up reserve divisions of its armed forces
[10:12] to provide support as the military
[10:14] searches for two Israeli soldiers
[10:16] captured in the guerrilla attack. And
[10:18] police in India are trying to track down
[10:21] those responsible for eight nearly
[10:23] simultaneous bombings aboard rush hour
[10:25] commuter trains yesterday. At least 190
[10:28] people were killed in the attacks and
[10:30] more than 600 injured. And this morning
[10:34] Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says
[10:35] world leaders may have no choice but to
[10:38] haul Iran before the UN Security
[10:40] Council. The announcement comes as
[10:42] Tehran failed to meet today's deadline
[10:45] to respond to a series of international
[10:47] incentives aimed at suspending Iran's
[10:49] nuclear enrichment program.
[10:52] Now here's a look at one of your top
[10:53] health headlines on MSNBC.com.
[10:56] A new study brings bad news to women who
[10:59] smoke. Cigarette smoking women are twice
[11:01] as likely to get lung cancer than men
[11:03] who smoke, but apparently women have a
[11:06] better chance at surviving the disease.
[11:08] Once lung cancer is diagnosed and
[11:10] treated, women are 52% less likely to
[11:13] die than men. If you'd like more
[11:16] information on this and other health
[11:17] stories, just check us out on the health
[11:19] page. It's at MSNBC.com.
[11:22] Now an early look at how Wall Street
[11:24] will be kicking off the day. The Dow
[11:25] gained 31 points Tuesday to close at
[11:27] 11,134.
[11:29] The S&P added five points. The Nasdaq
[11:32] rose 11. In overseas trading, Tokyo's
[11:35] Nikkei tumbled 224 points. An up day in
[11:39] Hong Kong though, Hang Seng up 32.
[11:42] A report out this morning says the US
[11:44] Army is set to dump its most
[11:46] controversial business partner. For more
[11:49] on that and your early business
[11:50] headlines, we're joined by Steve
[11:51] Sedgwick from the London headquarters of
[11:53] CNBC Europe. Good morning, Steve.
[11:57] Yes, good morning to you. Thank you very
[11:58] much indeed. Interesting times at
[11:59] Halliburton, the company formerly run by
[12:02] Vice President Dick Cheney. Uh looks
[12:04] like, according to the Washington Post,
[12:06] it has lost a very lucrative
[12:08] contract to supply logistics to the US
[12:11] Army in Iraq. Now this contract last
[12:13] year was worth around about 7 billion US
[12:17] dollars, but army officials are saying
[12:18] it's nothing to do with uh disputes over
[12:21] audited accounts or question marks over
[12:23] the prices charged. It's just that they
[12:25] think they can get better value out of a
[12:27] system that has multiple contractors
[12:29] giving them better prices. Elsewhere,
[12:31] it's looking towards an interesting time
[12:34] on Friday in the auto sector. Rick
[12:37] Wagoner has said he's looking forward to
[12:38] having talks with uh Carlos Ghosn.
[12:41] Carlos Ghosn is the boss, the man who at
[12:43] Renault-Nissan turned the company
[12:45] around. Rick Wagoner uh has been under a
[12:47] bit of pressure as of late from Kirk
[12:49] Kerkorian, the Tracinda uh boss,
[12:52] basically just saying, "Come on, get
[12:53] together with the uh European stroke
[12:55] Japanese combine and let's see if we can
[12:57] get them taking a stake in GM uh and
[13:00] make this company move forward."
[13:01] Elsewhere, Delphi has finally filed uh
[13:04] its uh numbers for 2005. It's a $2.4
[13:07] billion loss, but that is a vast
[13:09] improvement on the $4.8 billion US
[13:12] dollars we saw in the previous year. And
[13:14] very briefly for you, Puma has emerged
[13:16] as the top uh sporting clothing wear
[13:20] group out of the World Cup. Uh Puma
[13:22] supplied 12 teams in the tournament.
[13:24] Second was Nike with eight teams who of
[13:26] course supplied the US. Back to you. All
[13:28] right, Steve. Thanks so much. Coming up
[13:30] in sports for you, the National League
[13:32] looks to end its losing streak at the
[13:34] All-Star game. Plus, who says men have
[13:37] all the fun? The WNBA's Diana Taurasi
[13:40] goes the distance as she shows off her
[13:43] All-Star skills at Madison Square
[13:45] Garden. Your early morning sports
[13:46] headlines are straight ahead.
[13:48] And good morning. Plenty of heat from

[16:40] Good morning. If you're just waking up,
[16:42] this is Early Today. And in sports,
[16:43] baseball's All-Star game turns into a
[16:45] nine-inning thriller. Plus a photo
[16:49] finish to decide stage nine of the Tour
[16:51] de France. Here's NBC's Fred Rogan with
[16:53] an early look at all your sports
[16:55] headlines.
[16:57] Good morning. Baseball's All-Star game
[16:58] took place in Pittsburgh last night. The
[17:00] National League has struggled the past
[17:01] decade and this year was no different as
[17:03] the American League showed they still
[17:04] dominate the midsummer classic. Top of
[17:06] the second, the AL struck first. The
[17:08] Angels' Vlad Guerrero took Dodger
[17:10] pitcher Brad Penny deep for a solo homer
[17:12] and the American League led it one to
[17:13] nothing. But the lead didn't stay for
[17:15] long. Bottom two, the Mets' David
[17:17] Wright, a solo shot to left and that
[17:19] tied the game at one. To the third
[17:21] inning, Roy Halladay was on the hill,
[17:23] the Toronto right-hander, with a wild
[17:26] pitch past Ivan Rodriguez. Carlos
[17:29] Beltran, who stole third, then came in
[17:31] to score the NL up two to one. Ninth
[17:33] inning, two outs, two strikes. The
[17:35] Padres' Trevor Hoffman trying to close
[17:37] it out, but that was Michael Young
[17:38] sending it into the gap. Jose Lopez
[17:41] scored. Troy Glaus scored. Young with a
[17:43] triple, the AL was back up three to two.
[17:46] Bottom nine, tying run at second for the
[17:48] NL, but Mariano Rivera took care of
[17:49] business. Got Carlos Lee to fly to
[17:52] Michael Young, the game's MVP. The AL
[17:54] won it three to two, giving them home
[17:56] field advantage in the World Series.
[17:59] No one's really giving huge rallying
[18:01] calls to to try and get home field
[18:02] advantage in the World Series, but we're
[18:03] all aware aware of how important this
[18:05] game is.
[18:06] Um someone now is going to,
[18:08] you know,
[18:09] be in good shape come October. Tour de
[18:11] France returned to the streets for the
[18:12] 105-mile ninth stage. Trouble eight
[18:14] miles from the finish as a group of
[18:16] riders were involved in a crash. No one
[18:18] seriously hurt. Great finish in this
[18:20] one, down to the wire. Spain's Oscar
[18:23] Freire beat Robbie McEwen in a photo
[18:25] finish. The Ukrainian rider retained the
[18:27] overall leader's yellow jersey. The
[18:29] Madison Square Garden, great shot by
[18:31] Phoenix's Diana Taurasi as she sank a
[18:34] half-court shot in the WNBA All-Star
[18:36] workout, then did a little dance for the

[21:40] Good morning and welcome back. It is
[21:42] Wednesday, halfway through the week, and
[21:44] we're going to stay hot and humid with
[21:45] high fire danger in the Southwest, not
[21:47] humid rather, but dry heat. 106 in

[21:59] we're going to go hot there in the parts
[22:01] of the Dakotas and Montana, 90s, even
[22:03] some triple digits.
[22:06] And if you're watching us on KTUU 2 News
[22:09] in Anchorage, Alaska, this is a fun
[22:11] event. Seems like one. Visit the Bear
[22:13] Paw Festival in Eagle River. Watch
[22:16] events including the slippery salmon
[22:19] Olympics, where competitors take on an
[22:22] obstacle course while carrying fresh
[22:24] salmon. That's your Pacific event of the
[22:26] day. That sounds very, very fun.
[22:29] Different.
[22:29] >> Slippery, I guess.
[22:30] >> Maybe a little smelly, too, with the
[22:31] fish. Hopefully the salmon doesn't get
[22:34] hurt. Right. Well, may Hopefully
[22:36] >> Cheetah.
[22:37] Now here's an early look at this
[22:38] morning's headlines in entertainment,
[22:40] and most actresses would kill to get a
[22:42] role alongside the man with a license to
[22:44] kill. So, it's a real headline when
[22:46] someone turns down being a Bond girl,
[22:48] and that is exactly what Latin and
[22:50] singing sensation Shakira did. She was
[22:52] offered a role in the upcoming Casino
[22:54] Royale, but had to turn it down because
[22:56] she was making an album. Well, now she's
[22:59] having big regrets, apparently, and
[23:01] hopes the producers ask her back for the
[23:04] next film.
[23:06] The Rolling Stones opened their
[23:07] long-delayed European tour last night in
[23:09] Milan, Italy, shortly after Keith
[23:11] Richards cleared up the tree issue. The
[23:14] guitarist says the fall in Fiji was from
[23:16] a small tree, not a palm or coconut
[23:19] tree. The band's tour was delayed as
[23:23] Richards recovered. Finally, speaking of
[23:25] concerts, you might want to think twice
[23:27] before inviting Jackie Chan to yours.
[23:30] A Taiwanese singer asked Chan to come to
[23:32] his Monday night, where Chan reportedly
[23:35] jumped on stage, announced he was drunk,
[23:37] and said he wanted to sing a duet. Chan
[23:41] hurled insults at the audience as he was
[23:44] heckled off stage.
[23:46] >> to give him some credit. At least he
[23:48] said, "Hey, I'm drunk." He admitted it.
[23:50] >> he didn't deny, you know, being maybe,
[23:52] you know, having a few of drinks. Some
[23:54] credit though, right?
[23:55] >> It doesn't just seem like him though. He
[23:57] always seems like a goody-goody to me.
[23:59] >> Yeah, happy-go-lucky. Always happy.
[24:01] >> He was having a good time that night.
[24:03] This comes to us from WNCN NBC 17 in

[24:23] hot, anyone who wants to taste has to

[24:29] get their parents' permission first.
[24:31] Would you try it, Jeff? I'd give it a
[24:33] try, but it's that odd, confusing thing.
[24:35] It's It's a cold thing, but it's going

[27:02] looking live from our camera in Long
[27:04] Beach. Hello, everyone. It's turning
[27:06] 5:00 a.m.
[27:07] >> And here are some of the very important
[27:08] stories we're following right now today
[27:09] in L.A.
[27:11] I'm Gina Kim live in San Bernardino
[27:12] County, where a wildfire has
[27:15] destroyed some 30 structures and is
[27:17] threatening hundreds more, including a
[27:19] piece of Hollywood history. The latest
[27:21] coming up next.
[27:23] Morning, I'm Robert Kovac in South
[27:25] Robertson. A 16-year-old girl is shot
[27:28] and killed just blocks from her high
[27:30] school, and now the search for her
[27:32] killers.
[27:33] An LAPD officer remains in critical
[27:36] condition after his 3-year-old son gets
[27:38] a hold of his gun and pulls the trigger.
[27:41] Also ahead, their goal is to stop
[27:43] illegal border crossings, but federal
[27:45] officials say the Minutemen are helping
[27:46] to reduce another illegal activity along
[27:49] the U.S.-Mexican border.
[27:51] Well, after our minimal break from the
[27:53] heat, we might even call it a pseudo
[27:55] break yesterday, temperatures climbing
[27:57] yet again. We're getting ready to go
[27:59] into a very hot weekend and a return of
[28:01] the monsoonal moisture. I'll have that
[28:03] in a moment.
[28:04] And a good morning on our freeways this
[28:06] morning. Little construction on the
[28:08] Pasadena Freeway, injury accident going
[28:11] to be affecting your drive on the 60.
[28:13] We'll have your live drive 40 traffic
[28:14] coming up in a few minutes.
[28:16] And a series of road rage incidents
[28:18] along a local highway has the CHP on
[28:21] alert. Officers increased patrols after
[28:23] angry drivers threaten Caltrans workers.
[28:26] And the farm fight now becomes a legal
[28:28] fight. The battle over a South L.A.
[28:30] urban farm moves to a courtroom today.
[28:32] And looking live right now from downtown
[28:35] Los Angeles, very soon Today in L.A.
[28:37] starts right now.
[28:41] Live from NBC 4.
[28:45] This is Today in L.A.
[28:48] Good morning. It is Wednesday, July
[28:50] 12th. I'm Jennifer Bjorklund.
[28:51] >> And I'm Chris Schauble. Let's get right
[28:53] to our top story, the wildfire in
[28:54] Pioneertown in the Yucca Valley. It is
[28:56] now called the Ridge Fire. At last
[28:58] count, more than 17,000 acres have
[29:00] burned, dozens of structures have been
[29:02] destroyed. That acreage count is liable
[29:04] to be higher once they get a look after
[29:06] daylight. The area is just north of Palm
[29:08] Springs and has been the site of dozens
[29:10] of Hollywood Westerns. The fire is now
[29:12] threatening other nearby towns and
[29:14] forcing hundreds of evacuations. Today
[29:16] in L.A.'s Gina Kim live in the Yucca
[29:18] Valley with the very latest details.
[29:20] Gina. Good morning, Chris. As you said,
[29:22] the acreage of this fire right now is
[29:24] estimated to be about 17,000, but that
[29:26] was the figure that we got at 6:00 last
[29:28] night when they were able to give us the
[29:30] last estimate because that was the last
[29:31] time that air crews were able to fly
[29:33] over and get a good look at the fire
[29:35] from above ground. Now, as you said, the
[29:38] fire by now has grown to a lot bigger
[29:40] than that. You are looking at Big
[29:42] Morongo Valley, and you can see just how
[29:45] much this land covers. It is an area
[29:47] bordered roughly by Highway 62 and 247
[29:51] to the west and the Riverside County
[29:53] line on the south.
