[0:06] I'm Jerry Willis at the CNN Center in

[0:08] Atlanta where it's 3:00 midnight out

[0:11] west. Our top story is the death of

[0:14] William Renquist. The 80-year-old Chief

[0:16] Justice of the United States has been

[0:18] undergoing cancer treatment for the past

[0:20] year. He was surrounded by his three

[0:22] children when he died at his home in

[0:24] Arlington, Virginia. President Bush was

[0:26] informed just before 11:00 p.m. Eastern

[0:28] time. The White House says the president

[0:30] will have an official statement later

[0:32] this morning. Ranquist had served on the

[0:34] Supreme Court since 1972. He was known

[0:37] early on as the lone conservative on

[0:39] many key decisions. In 1986, President

[0:42] Reagan tapped him to replace Warren

[0:44] Bergher as chief justice. He presided

[0:46] over the impeachment of President Bill

[0:48] Clinton. William Renquist would have

[0:50] turned 81 on October 1st.

[1:01] Our other top story is the state of

[1:03] emergency following Hurricane Katrina in

[1:05] New Orleans. Some 42,000 people were

[1:08] evacuated Saturday, including the rest

[1:10] of those at the Superdome. Officials say

[1:12] it could take a few more days to fully

[1:14] evacuate the city's convention center.

[1:16] Stragglers continue to show up looking

[1:18] for a way out of the flooded city. Now

[1:21] that the US military is in charge,

[1:23] Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and

[1:25] Joint Chief's Chairman General Meyers,

[1:27] Richard Meyers will be in New Orleans

[1:29] later today for a briefing on the

[1:31] situation. Also on Sunday, Secretary of

[1:33] State Condisa Rice will be in her home

[1:35] state of Alabama for a firsthand look.

[1:38] President Bush along with former

[1:39] presidents George H.
