[0:47] >> From ABC News, this is World News
[0:51] Tonight.
[0:53] Reporting from ABC News headquarters,
[0:55] Charles Gibson. Good evening. Katrina
[0:58] was bad. Very bad. The pictures of New
[1:02] Orleans show the city battered and
[1:04] buffered today. Building damage, water
[1:06] in the streets. But Katrina did jog
[1:09] slightly east just before hitting land.
[1:11] And that spared New Orleans, a city
[1:13] actually below sea level. The kind of
[1:15] direct hit that residents have worried
[1:18] about and feared for years. Still, the
[1:20] city took a real body blow. For a time
[1:23] this morning, there was concern winds
[1:24] might rip the roof right off the
[1:26] Superdome. That slight turn in the
[1:29] storm's path meant that the Mississippi
[1:30] Gulf and Alabama were hit harder than
[1:33] had been expected. A storm surge with a
[1:35] 20ft wall of water did huge damage to
[1:38] the Mississippi coast. G winds gusted
[1:41] along the shoreline up to 145 mph.
[1:45] Tonight, a major disaster area has been
[1:47] declared in Louisiana and Mississippi.
[1:49] Damage estimates, very preliminary
