[0:00] Hello, I'm John Roberts and welcome to
[0:01] the CBS Evening News online edition.
[0:04] Just ahead, Rita strengthens into a
[0:06] monster category 5 hurricane, the most
[0:08] dangerous of all. John Blackstone's got
[0:11] the latest for us on that. Also, David
[0:13] Martin reports on a controversial
[0:14] training program that prepares new
[0:16] medics for real life battle conditions
[0:18] in Iraq. And a World War II hero gets
[0:21] the funeral she deserves from friends
[0:23] she never knew after Hurricane Katrina.
[0:26] It's all starting now on the CBS Evening
[0:28] News online edition.
[0:31] Well, here we go again. Hurricane Rita
[0:34] is now at the top of the hurricane
[0:36] scale, a category five, and about a
[0:39] million Gulf Coast residents are being
[0:40] evacuated tonight. Rita is tracking
[0:42] across the Gulf of Mexico with top
[0:45] sustained winds above 160 m an hour.
[0:48] Coastal areas from Texas to Louisiana
[0:50] could be affected, including New
[0:52] Orleans, where after Katrina, even a
[0:55] glancing blow could be devastating. Rita
[0:57] is projected to make landfall around
[0:59] Galveastston, Texas by early Saturday.
[1:02] CBS News correspondents are deployed
[1:04] across the potential hurricane zone to
[1:06] bring you full coverage of Hurricane
[1:08] Rita. We begin tonight with John
[1:10] Blackstone in Galveston.
[1:13] The sick are being loaded onto
[1:15] helicopters. Those without cars are
[1:17] climbing into buses. With Rita now a top
[1:20] of the scale category 5 hurricane,
[1:22] Galveastston is quickly becoming a ghost
[1:25] town.
