[0:01] There they go again. Federal workers
[0:04] sent home for the second time in a
[0:05] month. Bob Schiffer will have the latest
[0:07] on the budget crisis. Finally, a break
[0:09] in the weather and the first US
[0:11] paratroopers fly into Bosnia. Tanks are
[0:14] on the way. We have reports from
[0:16] correspondents David Martin and Alan
[0:17] Pizzy. And eye on America. You put your
[0:20] life in their hands, but are they clean?
[0:23] What you can't see could hurt you.
[0:30] This is the CBS Evening News with Dan
[0:34] Rather.
[0:36] >> Good evening. For more than a quarter of
[0:37] a million federal employees and their
[0:39] families today, it's the nightmare
[0:41] before Christmas. They've been forced on
[0:43] involuntary furlow again because of the
[0:46] federal budget stalemate. President
[0:48] Clinton and Republican congressional
[0:49] leaders spoke this afternoon about their
[0:51] deep differences over budget priorities,
[0:54] but not even face to face. They talked
[0:56] by phone. Chief Washington correspondent
[0:59] Bob Schiffer has the latest.
[1:02] >> We will shut the building down at 12
[1:04] noon today.
[1:06] >> One week from Christmas, Housing
[1:07] Secretary Cisneros broke the news
[1:09] personally to workers at his department.
[1:12] But unlike the last layoff, the 280,000
[1:15] federal workers sent home today got no
[1:17] assurance they'll be paid later for the
[1:19] missed work days.
[1:20] >> If they don't care about the federal
[1:22] employees, then uh come election time,
[1:24] we should let them know how we feel. For
[1:26] the second day running, Washington's
[1:28] monuments and museums were closed, but
[1:30] the blame game was in high gear.
[1:32] Republicans posed outside the National
[1:34] Gallery of Art
