[2:18] >> Now live. This is CBS4 News at 11.

[2:24] >> Tonight, two families in mourning after

[2:27] a deadly crash in front of a South

[2:29] Florida elementary school.

[2:30] >> We would always be together.

[2:32] >> Now, a speeding car loses control,

[2:35] [music] bringing a shattering halt to

[2:37] two young lives.

[2:39] The car the teen victims were traveling

[2:41] in was mangled after slamming into a

[2:43] tree.

[2:44] >> Tonight, friends are gathering to

[2:45] remember the victims. CBS4's Evan Bacon

[2:48] is live on the scene in Coral Springs

[2:50] with details for us. Evan?

[2:51] >> Yeah, such a terrible tragedy. Elliot,

[2:53] we are here at the scene now. The car is

[2:55] gone. The victims are gone. All that's

[2:57] left is that morbid marker of the

[2:59] accident.

[3:02] A tearful gathering at a Coral Springs

[3:05] home. Friends and classmates light

[3:07] candles and exchange hugs in memory of

[3:10] 16-year-old James Peglo.

[3:12] >> He'd make everybody laugh. He was always

[3:14] an outgoing person. He would never be

[3:16] sad. And I mean, I've known him forever.

[3:21] So, I was a girlfriend forever. So,

[3:25] he just passed away. And I can't believe

[3:27] it.

[3:27] >> One day, he came out of nowhere to me

[3:29] and said, "You should play football."

[3:30] and he got me his jersey and took me out

[3:33] there and I liked the practices and then

[3:34] I started playing for him.

[3:36] >> Peglo was a passenger in this mangled

[3:38] Pontiac Grand Prix. His good friend,

[3:40] 17-year-old Richard Princiada, was

[3:43] behind the wheel when the careened off

[3:45] the 5200 block of Coral Ridge Drive

[3:48] about 9:30 Wednesday morning and slammed

[3:51] into a tree.

[3:52] >> I heard the car thunder down there and I

[3:54] turned around. I moved towards the

[3:56] further off the roadway because I

[3:57] thought it was a car out of control.

[3:59] Coral Springs police say the Grand Prix

[4:01] was speeding when Princiata lost control

[4:03] and went off the right side of the road.

[4:05] >> I checking one of the passengers no

[4:09] response. Second passenger has a very

[4:12] weak pulse

[4:15] and by the time rescue started doing it

[4:19] anything else,

[4:22] nothing can do for the kid.

[4:23] >> It's a hard lesson for these teenagers

[4:25] to learn. It's our town. slow it down,

[4:28] but oh how devastating the cost.

[4:32] >> Police are still investigating the cause

[4:34] of this accident. We're live in Coral

[4:36] Springs. Evan Bacon, CBS4 News Tonight.

[4:38] >> Well, if you love the South Florida

[4:40] heat, you better enjoy it while it

[4:41] lasts.

[4:42] >> A taste of fall is in the forecast. CBS4

[4:44] meteorologist Craig Sets is live in

[4:46] weather control. Hi, Craig.

[4:47] >> Hi. We've got just about one more day of

[4:50] full summer sun and then it is cooler

[4:52] times ahead. Here's what's going on

[4:54] tonight. We've got the warm air still

[4:55] over us across South Florida, but up to

[4:57] the northwest, look at that. 30s and

[4:59] 40s. They're making their way fairly far

[5:00] to the south. And we are going to see a

[5:02] big temperature drop here. For the rest

[5:04] of tonight and tomorrow, though, dry air

[5:07] is in control. And then a cold front

[5:09] comes through. That'll bring us a good

[5:10] chance for thunderstorms on Friday. But

[5:13] it's Saturday and Sunday when the real

[5:15] cool stuff gets in. There's Friday's

[5:17] rain. Saturday and Sunday, highs will be

[5:19] in the low 80s and overnight lows will

[5:22] be in the 60s. More on that forecast

[5:24] coming up in a bit.

[5:26] >> Tonight, the final face off. The men who

[5:29] want to be president attacking the

[5:30] issues and attacking [music] each other.

[5:33] >> President just said that government run

[5:35] healthcare

[5:36] uh results in poor quality. Now, maybe

[5:39] that explains why he hasn't fully funded

[5:42] the VA.

[5:42] >> You talk about the VA. We've increased

[5:45] VA funding by 22 billion in the four

[5:47] years since I've been president. That's

[5:49] twice the amount that my predecessor

[5:51] increased VA funding. Of course, we're

[5:53] meeting our obligation to our veterans,

[5:55] and the veterans know that.

[5:56] >> Now, the candidates [music] back in

[5:58] their corners after the last

[6:00] presidential debate.

[6:02] >> With just 20 days now until America

[6:04] chooses its next president, everything

[6:06] from abortion and stem cell research to

[6:08] the flu shot shortage was debated,

[6:10] >> but the focus now, did either candidate

[6:13] sway voters? CBS4's Gary Nelson is in

[6:16] satellite control with more on that.

[6:17] Gary,

[6:18] >> did either candidate sway voters? Well,

[6:20] we'll know that by the time the sun

[6:22] comes up, what with instant overnight

[6:24] polling and the like. George Bush

[6:26] calling John Kerry tonight a liberal to

[6:28] the left of Ted Kennedy. Kerry slamming

[6:31] Bush on lost jobs and Americans without

[6:34] healthcare.

[6:36] >> George Bush and John Kerry met for their

[6:38] third and final debate, one on domestic

[6:40] matters that immediately focused on the

[6:42] foreign affair in Iraq. I believe that

[6:44] this president regrettably

[6:47] uh rushed us into a war, made decisions

[6:50] about foreign policy, pushed alliances

[6:53] away.

[6:54] >> Yes, we can be safe and secure if we

[6:58] stay on the offense against the

[6:59] terrorists, and if we spread freedom and

[7:02] liberty around the world,

[7:03] >> the current flu vaccine crisis brought

[7:05] advice from the president on who should

[7:07] get a shot that drew a shot from Carrie.

[7:09] The uh CDC responsible for health in the

[7:12] United States is setting those

[7:13] priorities and is allocating the flu

[7:16] vaccine accordingly.

[7:19] I haven't gotten a flu shot and I don't

[7:20] intend to.

[7:21] >> This really uh underscores the problem

[7:25] with the American healthcare system.

[7:26] It's not working for the American family

[7:29] and it's gotten worse under President

[7:31] Bush over the course of the last years.

[7:33] Kerry promised healthc care coverage for

[7:35] all Americans and tax cuts for the

[7:37] middle class. Promises the president

[7:39] countered Carrie can't keep.

[7:41] >> And a plan is not to lay out programs

[7:43] that you can't pay for. He just said he

[7:46] wants everybody to be able to buy into

[7:48] the same plan that senators and

[7:49] congressmen get. That cost the

[7:51] government $7,700 per family. Being

[7:54] lectured by the president uh uh on

[7:57] fiscal responsibility is a little bit

[7:59] like Tony Soprano talking to me about

[8:01] law and order in this country.

[8:04] >> Uh let me

[8:04] >> in demeanor Bush was back to facial

[8:06] expressions.

[8:08] >> Is it the administration [laughter]

[8:09] >> and audible reactions similar to the

[8:12] first debate that polls show cost him

[8:14] style points. The candidate slugged it

[8:16] out for two hours as Kerry slammed the

[8:18] president on lost jobs and higher

[8:20] prices. Bush painting Carrie as the tax

[8:23] and spend liberal tax relief was

[8:25] important.

[8:25] >> And joining us now live from our news

[8:27] partner, the Miami Herald, executive

[8:29] editor and preeminent political analyst

[8:32] Tom Feedler. Tom, who won this thing?

[8:35] >> Well, you know, I think what you've got

[8:36] to do, Gary, in determining who won is

[8:38] look at what the stakes were coming in.

[8:40] I think the heavier burden was borne by

[8:42] President Bush. Most people would say

[8:44] that he came into this 0 for two. the

[8:47] best he could hope for was to try to

[8:48] come out of this one for three and then

[8:50] go on to November 2nd. Frankly, uh I

[8:53] think it was tough territory for him.

[8:55] Domestic issues uh given his record were

[8:58] going to be kind of a hard sell. I I

[9:00] would say that um at best he came out of

[9:03] this uh with a draw and that's really

[9:05] not good enough.

[9:06] >> John K's best moment tonight and George

[9:09] Bush's best moment. Well, with John

[9:11] Kerry, I think uh perhaps his best

[9:13] moment was when he showed a human side

[9:14] when he made the joke about his wife and

[9:16] marrying up and he said some married up

[9:19] more than others and then obviously

[9:20] laughed at himself. He doesn't show that

[9:22] human side uh very often. I thought

[9:25] President Bush showed also the warmth

[9:28] that we haven't seen a lot of when he

[9:29] spoke about his faith, when he spoke

[9:31] about the love for his wife.

[9:33] That was a genuine moment and I think

[9:36] made made the evening end on a more

[9:38] positive note than we've seen yet.

[9:41] >> Given John K's reversal of fortunes, he

[9:44] was on his way down. Now he's been on

[9:46] his way up since these debates began.

[9:48] Could this be the presidential election,

[9:50] Tom, that the debates decide? I

[9:53] >> I think it absolutely could. Uh going

[9:55] into that first debate, John Kerry was

[9:57] clearly fading as you noted there. uh

[10:00] that first debate brought him into a tie

[10:02] and I I would say that the the uh

[10:04] momentum has been running with him ever

[10:06] since. This is going to turn out to be

[10:09] for the next few days a real game a

[10:11] trench warfare. Uh it's going to be

[10:14] street to street and who gets their

[10:16] people to the polling place on November

[10:17] 2nd.

[10:18] >> Well, Tom Feedler of the Miami Herald,

[10:20] thank you very much for joining us

[10:21] tonight. We'll see you again, I'm sure,

[10:23] in the few weeks to come.

[10:24] >> You're welcome, Gary.

[10:25] >> And there you have it. The three

[10:27] presidential debates are over. All that

[10:30] is left the election and just a little

[10:32] less than three weeks more of spin and

[10:35] stump. Gary Nelson, CBS4 News Tonight.

[10:38] >> Thank you, Gary. In other news tonight,

[10:40] a harrowing ordeal at sea is over after

[10:43] a man goes overboard from a freighter

[10:45] and survives for 12 hours until a

[10:47] passing boater finally rescues him six

[10:49] miles off the Hillsboro Inlet. CBS4.
