[0:00] assassin John Hinckley.
[0:02] Only a quick dash to the hospital saved
[0:04] his life. Just 4 weeks later, Mr.
[0:07] Speaker, the President of the United
[0:09] States. he addressed the Congress.
[0:12] He was more popular than ever, and what
[0:14] became known as the Reagan revolution
[0:16] was underway. While cutting taxes, the
[0:19] Reagans themselves spent lavishly to
[0:21] restore an aura of glamour and glitz to
[0:23] the White House. Breaking with the past,
[0:25] President Reagan nominated the first

[1:07] shield against nuclear weapons in space.
[1:10] It wasn't until his second term that he
[1:12] met with the Soviet leader, but in 1985,
[1:15] he and Mikhail Gorbachev began a
[1:17] partnership that culminated in the first
[1:19] arms treaty to actually reduce the
[1:21] number of nuclear weapons.
[1:24] And a few years later, when communism
[1:26] began to crumble, many gave credit to
[1:28] long-standing policies accelerated by
[1:30] President Reagan.
[1:32] Mr. Gorbachev,
