[0:03] It is over. The Senate finds President

[0:06] Clinton not guilty.

[0:08] >> The Senate sitting as a court of

[0:10] impeachment stands adjourned sine die.

[0:14] >> And now the President looks to the

[0:16] future. This can be

[0:19] and this must be

[0:22] a time of reconciliation

[0:24] and renewal

[0:26] for America.

[0:29] >> This is the CBS Evening News.

[0:34] With Dan Rather reporting tonight from

[0:36] Washington.

[0:38] >> Good evening. The verdict is in.

[0:40] President Clinton will stay in office.

[0:42] The push by Republicans to remove him

[0:44] failed today. The vote wasn't even close

[0:47] to the 2/3 majority required. That'd be

[1:05] the Chief Justice formally posed the

[1:06] question, was the President guilty of

[1:08] perjury?

[1:09] >> Senators, how say you?

[1:12] Is the respondent, William Jefferson

[1:14] Clinton, guilty or not guilty?

[1:17] >> In a stinging defeat for House

[1:18] prosecutors, the measure did not even

[1:20] win support of a simple majority of

[1:22] senators. 10 Republicans, Chafee,

[1:25] Collins, Jeffords, Snowe, Specter,

[1:28] Gordon, Shelby, Stevens, Thompson, and

[1:30] Warner joined all 45 Democrats in saying

[1:34] not guilty, and the perjury charge was

[1:36] defeated 55 to 45.

[1:39] Five of those Republicans also voted for

[1:42] acquittal on the second charge,

[1:44] obstruction of justice. That left the

[1:46] Senate split 50-50. Again, far short of

[1:49] the 67 votes required to remove the

[1:52] President from office. So, it was done.
