[0:10] >> Good evening. The Roman Catholic Church
[0:11] in America has been struggling with
[0:13] widespread charges and actual cases of
[0:16] sex abuse, but nothing quite like
[0:18] tonight's story. Cardinal Joseph
[0:20] Bernardin of Chicago has been named in a
[0:22] $10 million lawsuit alleging he abused a
[0:25] Catholic student in the 1970s. Cardinal
[0:28] Bernardin, who has been a leader of
[0:30] church reform efforts in this very area,
[0:32] made a forceful and very public denial
[0:35] today. NBC's Don Bartangelo now.

[0:39] >> Cardinal Joseph Bernardin is one of the
[0:41] most respected and visible Roman
[0:42] Catholic cardinals in this country. He's
[0:44] now become the highest-ranking church
[0:46] official in this country to be accused
[0:48] of sexual abuse.
[0:50] >> I was flabbergasted. I I
[0:53] said, "How How could this be that that
[0:56] such allegations of such charges were
[0:59] made?" And I was saddened too.
[1:02] >> The charges are brought by former
[1:03] seminarian student Stephen Cook, who
[1:05] claims the abuse took place between 1975
[1:08] and 1977 at a program in Cincinnati. The
[1:11] suit claims Cook only recently began to
[1:13] recall the abuse, first by a priest at
[1:16] the seminary and later by Bernardin, who
[1:18] was then archbishop. According to the
[1:20] lawsuit, the sexual abuse by Bernardin
[1:22] included kissing, fondling of the
[1:24] genitals and buttocks, culminating in
[1:27] Stephen Cook being sodomized by
[1:28] Bernardin. At a news conference today,
[1:30] the cardinal said he doesn't remember
[1:32] Cook and calmly denied the charges.
