[0:00] say what our role will be in NATO in

[0:03] looking to the future, not being pushed

[0:06] to the forefront as we are right now

[0:08] saying, "We won't take anything except

[0:11] troops on the ground." Troops on the

[0:13] ground should be the last option, not

[0:16] the first. And I think the president has

[0:17] gotten out a little far, and I don't

[0:20] think that it would be wise for him

[0:23] to to send troops without the support of

[0:25] the American people.

[0:27] >> Uh Senator Lieberman, the situation in

[0:30] Bosnia is such where

[0:32] the possibility of mission creep is

[0:33] great. We went into Somalia, the mission

[0:36] changed. We went into Lebanon, the

[0:38] mission changed. Why won't the same

[0:40] thing happen in Bosnia, particularly

[0:42] when we're trying to keep the peace and

[0:44] also rearm the Muslims at the same time?

[0:47] >> The uh same thing will not happen in

[0:49] Bosnia, Tim, because we've learned from

[0:50] those earlier experiences, and we've

[0:52] learned from earlier experiences in

[0:54] Bosnia itself.

[0:56] Uh we are sending in, let's remember,

[0:58] 20,000 of 60,000. We're not doing this

[1:01] alone, and this is what I would say to

[1:02] your mom in Buffalo. NATO is a

[1:05] partnership. We formed it after the

[1:07] Second World War to stop the communists

[1:09] from coming across Europe and to

[1:11] threaten them and and intimidate them so

[1:13] that we wouldn't get into a nuclear war

[1:15] with them here in the United States.

[1:17] NATO is the strongest military alliance

[1:19] in the world. They are our partners. In

[1:21] fact, in Operation Gulf uh Desert Storm,

[1:25] we called on them to help us, and they

[1:27] were there. In effect, they are calling

[1:29] on us now

[1:30] to help them in
