[0:06] On a special edition of World News, a
[0:08] nation collapsed. Tens of thousands
[0:10] feared [music] dead in Haiti after the
[0:12] most violent earthquake there in two
[0:14] centuries. Rescuers struggle to find
[0:17] survivors buried under flattened
[0:19] buildings.
[0:22] Desperate [music] need prompts global
[0:23] relief. We're on the ground in Haiti and
[0:25] we'll talk with former President
[0:27] Clinton, [music] now a United Nations
[0:29] special envoy. Tonight, earthquake
[0:32] [music] in Haiti.
[0:35] >> From the global resources of ABC News,
[0:38] this is ABC World News with Diane
[0:41] [music] Sawyer.
[0:43] Reporting tonight, George
[0:44] Stephanopoulos.
[0:45] >> Good evening. The President of Haiti
[0:47] said today that his [music] country is
[0:49] destroyed. Here are the words being used
[0:52] to describe the earthquake's impact:

[0:56] collapse. As in hospitals, schools,
[0:59] prisons, even the presidential palace
[1:01] collapsed. Tens, perhaps hundreds of
[1:04] thousands of people have been killed in
[1:06] a nation already wrecked by poverty.
[1:08] Power, food, and water all in short
[1:11] supply. The Red Cross has run out of
[1:13] medicine. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake,
[1:16] Haiti's worst in 240 years, hit hardest
[1:19] in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Nearly 3
[1:22] and 1/2 million people live in the
[1:23] affected areas, many in tin shacks on
[1:26] unstable hillsides, where they huddled
[1:28] all night long in prayer.
[1:31] One relief worker sent an email that
[1:32] said simply, "SOS.
[1:35] Please help us."
[1:37] This tiny Caribbean nation has suddenly
[1:39] become the center of the world. As one
[1:40] Haitian wrote, "Some countries are just
[1:43] not lucky." We begin there toni
