[0:02] this is the CBS Evening News
[0:07] with Connie Chung in New York and Dan
[0:10] Rather in Porto Prince, Haiti.
[0:13] Good evening. The drums of war are
[0:15] beating and even the generals here in
[0:17] Haiti can hear them now. No one doubts
[0:20] any longer that preparations are
[0:22] underway for a massive US invasion to
[0:25] drive out Hades military rulers and
[0:27] restore the elected president.
[0:30] These are the ones who wait for war.
[0:32] Hades unarmed, unemployed, underfed
[0:35] citizens, mostly poor and illiterate.
[0:37] They have no rifles at the ready, no
[0:39] sandbags at their doors. Many barely
[0:42] have a roof over their heads. They don't

[1:05] assault. Their way of waiting gives
[1:08] already anxious citizens further cause
[1:10] to worry. And so the people wait in
[1:13] fear. The question is which do they fear
[1:16] more? The violence of an invasion or the
[1:19] terror of the status quo in Haiti.
[1:22] >> President Clinton is pressing ahead with
[1:24] invasion plans so far without much
[1:27] support in the Congress or among the
[1:30] American public. A new CBS News New York
[1:32] Times poll indicates twothirds of
[1:35] Americans oppose sending US troops here
[1:37] to restore the elected president. Our
[1:40] Pentagon correspondent David Martin has
[1:41] the latest on the deployment and the
[1:44] doubts.
