[0:01] Good evening. This is the CBS Evening
[0:03] News. Dan Rather reporting tonight from
[0:05] Los Angeles. President Reagan now is
[0:07] reported ready to do something he said
[0:09] he would not do. Agree with Congress on
[0:11] a jobs bill. For months, the president
[0:13] has refused to do that. White House
[0:15] correspondent Leslie Stall reports on
[0:16] what a difference a few months make.
[0:20] >> New jobs, roughly 300,000, mostly in
[0:23] construction. President Reagan now says
[0:25] he supports a $4.3 billion program to
[0:28] create that kind of employment. He and
[0:30] Congress are cooperating, actually
[0:32] speeding ahead with legislation. If all

[0:54] >> The Democrats do want to add though $1
[0:56] billion more for summer youth jobs and
[0:59] child nutrition. The Republicans say,
[1:01] "Let's wait.
[1:02] >> Get what you can now immediately to
[1:04] really do something substantial." And
[1:06] those more uh questionable items lead
[1:09] them to a later date. About half the
[1:11] president's new proposal is taken
[1:13] directly from the Democrats bill of last
[1:15] December, including jobs that would be
[1:17] created by spending $300 million from
[1:20] military housing construction, 100
[1:22] million for repairing veterans
[1:23] hospitals, and 50 million for adding
[1:26] daycare centers. But three months ago,
[1:28] the president called such
