[0:01] From ABC, this is World News Sunday.

[0:06] Here's Carol Simpson.

[0:07] >> Good evening. [music]

[0:08] New York City and federal officials are

[0:10] tonight trying to find out who was

[0:12] responsible for trying to smuggle

[0:14] hundreds of illegal Chinese immigrants

[0:16] into the United States aboard a small

[0:19] freighter which ran ground on a New York

[0:21] City beach early this morning. At least

[0:24] six are known dead. Scores were hurt.

[0:26] Immigrants described to authorities a

[0:29] horrible journey. 100 days at sea in the

[0:32] cramped freighter with little food.

[0:34] ABC's Bill Blakemore has details.

[0:38] >> Approximately 300 illegal immigrants

[0:40] from Asia are thought to have been

[0:41] packed on board the small freighter. It

[0:44] was discovered at about 2 in the morning

[0:45] a ground off a city beach on the

[0:47] Atlantic just east of the entrance to

[0:49] New York Harbor. Some were already on

[0:51] the beach. Some could have already

[0:53] disappeared into the city. Others were

[0:55] jumping into the heavy surf, clutching

[0:57] belongings in sealed plastic bags with

[1:00] sealed containers as flotation devices.

[1:02] >> I guess they thought that they had to

[1:04] bail out immediately and they they just

[1:06] grabbed whatever they thought could

[1:08] smoke. They were hanging on to 5gallon

[1:10] jugs.

[1:11] >> Six people are confirmed dead,

[1:13] apparently drowned in the last few yards

[1:15] of their long trip from the other side

[1:16] of the world. Whether everyone else who

[1:18] tried to swim made it may never be

[1:20] known. There's no reliable passenger

[1:23] list and rescuers say there was a strong

[1:25] riptide and undertoe out to sea. More

[1:28] than 20 were taken to local hospitals.
