[0:00] serving in the arm
[0:01] is an ABC News special report.
[0:07] Good afternoon, everybody. I'm Peter
[0:08] Jennings at ABC News headquarters in New
[0:10] York. We interrupt our regular program
[0:11] because on this Sunday, October the 7th,
[0:13] the US has begun a mission to
[0:15] Afghanistan. It is primarily
[0:17] humanitarian at this point, but we can
[0:19] tell you, based on several dispatches
[0:21] from Kabul, the Afghan capital, in the
[0:23] last while, I'll just quote them, the
[0:25] Reuters news agency says the Afghan
[0:27] capital is under attack and there have

[0:56] we're uncertain about the precise nature
[0:59] of that at this moment. We're going to
[1:00] give you what information we can and try
[1:02] to sketch out precisely what is
[1:04] happening and why. And we're going to
[1:06] start at the Pentagon with ABC's John
[1:07] McWethy. John.
[1:09] Peter, it seems likely that uh an attack
[1:12] that the United States has been planning
[1:14] and that we have been anticipating for
[1:16] nearly a month now is finally underway.
[1:19] Uh Pentagon sources have been saying
[1:21] that the first set of targets that are
[1:24] likely to be str
