[0:04] Christmas and chaos in Romania. Deposed
[0:07] leader Chaescu and his wife are reported
[0:09] executed.
[0:13] >> The civil war rages on. Tens of
[0:16] thousands may be dead.
[0:20] >> Christmas for US troops in Panama with
[0:23] Manuel Noriega still in the Vatican
[0:25] embassy trying to negotiate his way out
[0:27] of the country.
[0:29] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather
[0:31] reporting. Good evening. A possible deal
[0:33] is reported in the making on the Noriega

[1:11] coverage.

[1:15] called grave crimes against Romania. And
[1:17] the startling announcement by Romanian
[1:19] television was that Chescu and his wife
[1:21] had been tried, convicted, and executed.
[1:25] Only Thursday, the 71-year-old Chaoscu
[1:27] and his wife Elellena, virtually his
[1:29] second in command, were still clinging
[1:31] to power in the face of opposition that
[1:34] for the first time had become angry,
[1:36] public, and widespread.
[1:39] The announcement of the verdic
