[0:02] Legalized divorce wins a narrow victory
[0:04] at the polls in Ireland. Bosnian Serbs
[0:08] in Sievo protest the terms of the Balkan
[0:10] Peace Accord. And a funeral in Moscow
[0:13] for Olympic ice skater Sergey Greencock.
[0:17] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:24] and this is Bob Schaefer reporting. Good
[0:26] evening. In the closest vote in their
[0:28] republic's history, Ireland's people
[0:30] decided today to legalize divorce for
[0:33] the first time. The vote was close and
[0:35] authorities called for a recount, but
[0:37] the outcome was upheld. Jonathan Sanders
[0:40] has our report.
[0:44] It was the simplest of ballots. Yes or
[0:47] no to overturn Ireland's 58-year-old

[1:13] less than 1%, for legal recognition of
[1:16] the right to divorce and to remarry. The
[1:20] margin was so narrow, officials ordered
[1:22] an immediate nationwide recount.
[1:25] Most political and government leaders
[1:27] backed the referendum, but the
[1:28] predominantly Catholic country's other
[1:30] powerful institution, the church,
[1:33] vehemently opposed the move. Those who
[1:36] regard marriage as a holy sacrament
[1:38] argued divorce, would rip the fabric of
[1:41] Irish society. They marshaled all kinds
[1:43] of arguments, including that divorce
[1:45] drives men from homes. The slogan,
[1:48] "Hello, divorce, goodbye, daddy." All
[1:51] aimed at getting a big no turnout.
[1:54] Nearly a decade ago, the
