[0:03] A new warning to Saddam Hussein as a US
[0:05] aircraft carrier heads for the Persian
[0:07] Gulf. In this country, the Christmas
[0:10] surprise in a can that made hundreds of
[0:12] people ill. An eye on America. Tonight,
[0:16] a new face in the US Senate. The first
[0:19] American Indian in decades.
[0:26] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:34] Good evening. I'm Connie Chung sitting
[0:35] in tonight for Dan Rather. One day after
[0:38] shooting down an Iraqi jet, the United
[0:40] States is beefing up its air power in
[0:42] the Persian Gulf. Iraq remains defiant.
[0:45] Sodom Hussein's newspapers called the
[0:47] incident yesterday a cowardly act by
[0:50] President Bush as he departs for quote
[0:52] the dust bin of history. David Martin at
[0:55] the Pentagon has the latest.
[0:57] Again today, Iraqi warplanes violated
[0:59] the no-fly zone over southern Iraq,

[1:10] triggered by yesterday's incident in
[1:12] which two Iraqi planes crossed the 32nd
[1:15] parallel, the line which marks the
[1:16] boundary of the no-fly zone. Two
[1:19] American F-16s tried to warn them away,
[1:21] then fired a missile which knocked one
[1:22] Iraqi plane out of the sky and sent the
[1:25] other fleeing to safe haven in Iran.
[1:27] Today, a State Department spokesman made
[1:29] clear the US considers yesterday's
[1:31] incident a deliberate attempt to violate
[1:33] a UN resolution. This testing continued
[1:36] yesterday with their deliberate
[1:37] intrusion into the no-fly zone
[1:39] established by coalition forces to
[1:41] facilitate monitoring of Iraqi
[1:43] compliance
