[0:01] >> What's next for the man on the

[0:02] motorcycle?

[0:04] Burglars bust in and rip off a little

[0:06] league baseball stand.

[0:07] >> It's hard to understand why they would

[0:08] want to steal from kids.

[0:10] >> How the thieves put a damper on the

[0:12] summer season. Fox 12's Most Wanted

[0:15] leaves a big mess at a local miniart.

[0:17] What workers are saying about the safety

[0:19] of their store. But first, local

[0:22] business owners are fed up.

[0:23] >> Oh, absolutely. I mean, this is getting

[0:25] ridiculous. As owners try to clean up

[0:27] after one break-in, some bold burglars

[0:29] strike again. See if you can help find

[0:31] the thieves caught on camera. Only on 12

[0:34] and first on Fox.

[0:36] Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm

[0:37] Wayne Garcia.

[0:38] >> And I'm Shauna Parsons. First on Fox

[0:40] tonight, Fox 12's most wanted is

[0:41] targeting local U-Haul rental centers.

[0:44] Burglars hit two stores last night, just

[0:46] a week after Fox 12 broke the story of

[0:48] repeated burglaries and vandalism there.

[0:51] Someone broke into the U-Haul Center on

[0:52] Southeast 88th in Foster in Portland and

[0:55] ripped off a safe full of money. They

[0:58] also tried to break into a store in

[0:59] Clackamus and two of the crooks were

[1:00] caught on camera. KPTV's Mark Ross joins

[1:03] us live with a story you'll see only on

[1:04] 12. Mark,

[1:05] >> that's right. Just a week after a man

[1:07] broke in here and stole money. Last

[1:08] night, there were two burglars and they

[1:10] were both caught on camera. The owner

[1:12] says they climbed up these stairs early

[1:13] in the morning and busted in.

[1:18] >> Have you had enough yet? Oh, absolutely.

[1:20] I mean, this is getting ridiculous.

[1:22] >> The owners of some Portland U-Haul

[1:24] outlets say they're dealing with a crime

[1:25] wave unlike any they've ever seen.

[1:28] >> Extremely. Almost to the point where I

[1:29] think it'd be more beneficial to

[1:31] actually just set the money on the

[1:33] outside of the door.

[1:33] >> That's because they say thieves like

[1:35] these have targeted their stores at

[1:37] least six times in a month.

[1:39] >> It's intimidating for sure.

[1:40] >> Everyone's just kind of on edge. Just

[1:44] one week after Fox 12 aired our

[1:45] exclusive story about U-Haul burglaries

[1:47] and vandalism, crooks have struck again

[1:50] and again they were caught on camera.

[1:52] >> Very frustrating. This is the third time

[1:54] now that we've had someone try to break

[1:55] in.

[1:55] >> Surveillance cameras were rolling as two

[1:57] men in dark blue sweats walked right up

[1:59] to the U-Haul Center just after 5:15

[2:01] this morning. The first one seems to

[2:04] pause right in front of the camera,

[2:06] which Kyle Marvin thinks is meant to

[2:07] send a message.

[2:08] >> It doesn't really matter. I'm still

[2:10] going to come after you. You know,

[2:11] nothing's going to stop me at this

[2:12] point. You can see them walk past the

[2:14] office from this angle. The owner here

[2:16] says the men climbed these stairs, broke

[2:18] the window, and got inside, breaking in

[2:20] at a place where there were no cameras.

[2:23] >> Maybe a former employee that got laid

[2:25] off. Um, hard to say.

[2:27] >> It's going to sting a lot if it's

[2:28] somebody that I work very closely with.

[2:30] >> One of them then heads to the front of

[2:32] the store, pausing to pull up his

[2:33] hoodie. This is where the owners say

[2:35] they used to keep a key to the safe, but

[2:37] after finding no key, the burger decides

[2:40] to take the whole thing. Off he goes

[2:42] with a 200 lb safe less than one minute

[2:45] after he got there.

[2:46] >> It's pure adrenaline. I mean, there's no

[2:49] doubt about that. They're gunning for

[2:50] U-Haul.

[2:51] >> Cops got here quickly, but not quickly

[2:53] enough. Look at what someone did to the

[2:55] door while trying to break into another

[2:57] U-Haul center in Clackamus last night.

[2:59] >> They're causing all this hectic and

[3:02] chaos in the company. And this is video

[3:05] from last week showing a man tossing a

[3:07] rock through the U-Haul window in

[3:08] southeast Portland in order to test out

[3:10] the alarm system.

[3:12] >> Portland's always been good to us and

[3:13] the surrounding cities. And it's sad

[3:15] that it's come to this point.

[3:17] >> Back here live again, the company's

[3:18] offering a $1,000 reward for information

[3:21] that helps catch and convict the

[3:22] burglars. If you know to nab Fox 12's

[3:24] most wanted, call police. Live in

[3:26] Southwest Portland, Mark Ross, the 10:00

[3:28] news. Salem police need your help

[3:30] finding a gunman who forced three local

[3:33] schools into lockdown today. An armed

[3:35] man held up a Blockbuster video store on

[3:37] Market Street Northeast at about 11:30

[3:39] this morning. An employee there handed

[3:42] over some cash and the suspect took off

[3:43] carrying a black bag. Now, because of

[3:46] that, Englewood Elementary, Parish

[3:47] Middle School, and North Salem High

[3:49] School went into lockdown mode as

[3:51] authorities searched for the guy. Police

[3:53] describe him as a white man in his 40s

[3:55] with a thin build who wore a dark

[3:56] leather jacket, blue jeans, and white

[3:58] tennis shoes.

[3:59] >> One of Fox 12's most wanted is on the

[4:01] run tonight after assaulting a woman

[4:02] near a Beaverton MAX station. A woman

[4:04] told police that she was walking on

[4:06] Milick Way at about 10:30 last night

[4:08] when a strange man groped her. The woman

[4:10] screamed and pushed the man away. He ran

[4:12] toward the 7-Eleven store near the

[4:14] Milikin Way Max station. People who use

[4:17] that Max station say that this type of

[4:19] news is unsettling.

[4:22] It scares me and it kind of gets me mad

[4:24] cuz I mean it's supposed to be we're

[4:27] supposed to be out here and being safe.

[4:29] So, it's just kind of scary to be in

[4:31] this situation and not knowing what to

[4:33] do.

[4:34] >> Police describe the man as being about

[4:36] 56 160 lbs. If you know anything about

[4:39] the crime, call Beaverton police.

[4:41] Portland police want you to be aware of

[4:42] a potentially dangerous sex offender in

[4:44] violation of his parole. Authorities say

[4:47] Governor Lewis has not reported to his

[4:49] parole officer. Now, he did go to prison

[4:51] for sexually abusing and threatening a

[4:53] 15-year-old girl that he met on a Max

[4:54] Train back in 2001. He was convicted

[4:57] again in 2007 for not registering as a

[5:00] sex offender. Now, Lewis is a black man,

[5:02] 6'1, 185 pounds, black hair, brown eyes,

[5:06] and he is believed to be armed. A

[5:08] Vancouver man is sitting in jail tonight

[5:09] after police say police say he led them

[5:12] on a very high-speed chase through

[5:13] several counties. That chase went for

[5:16] more than 40 miles and only ended after

[5:18] police say the man's motorcycle ran out

[5:20] of gas. KPTV's Andrew God is live in

[5:22] Vancouver near the area where that chase

[5:24] ended. Andrew,

[5:25] >> well Shauna, that chase actually came up

[5:26] along here I 205 through this area. And

[5:29] Oregon State Police say at times the

[5:30] motorcycle driver was going faster than

[5:33] 140 m an hour.

[5:36] The whole thing ended here on the Glen

[5:38] Jackson Bridge this morning. A

[5:40] high-speed chase involving a motorcycle

[5:42] and speeds police say exceeded 140 miles

[5:45] an hour. Oregon State Police say the

[5:47] chase started south of Woodburn just

[5:49] before 1:00 this morning. A state

[5:51] trooper saw the motorcycle speeding in

[5:53] the northbound lanes. That's when he

[5:55] gave chase. But police say that

[5:57] motorcycle didn't stop and continued

[5:59] onto Interstate 205 at speeds of about

[6:03] 130 m an hour. Eventually, police caught

[6:05] up with the driver of the motorcycle,

[6:07] Clark Seatin of Vancouver and arrested

[6:09] him. But police say the only reason

[6:11] Seatin stopped was because his

[6:13] motorcycle ran out of gas. Seatan is

[6:16] facing numerous charges including

[6:18] attempt to elude and reckless driving as

[6:20] well as having a controlled substance.

[6:23] And officers from several agencies

[6:24] including Westland and Portland police

[6:26] assisted in that pursuit. Now coming up

[6:28] in the final cut, we talk motorcycle

[6:30] safety and have some tips for those on

[6:32] two wheels. Reporting live from over I

[6:34] 205 tonight, Andrew Fadoula, the 10

[6:36] o'clock news.

[6:37] >> Only on 12 tonight, a local baseball

[6:39] league is reeling from the news that

[6:40] somebody ripped off their clubhouse. It

[6:42] happened sometime yesterday at John Null

[6:44] Park in Long View. The president of the

[6:46] Western Youth Baseball League says that

[6:48] somebody took a computer, a CD, baseball

[6:51] equipment, and all that stuff from the

[6:53] clubhouse. He says the news is

[6:54] especially bad because the real victims

[6:56] are the kids.

[6:58] It's obviously very disappointing, you

[7:00] know, when you're uh trying to help um a

[7:02] group of kids in a youth organization

[7:03] that somebody would want to come in and

[7:05] first, you know, create uh a mess and

[7:08] problems, but then go even one step

[7:09] further and and steal from kids. That's

[7:12] the most disappointing part. So, that's

[7:13] the first thing that goes through your

[7:14] mind.

[7:14] >> Well, tonight, police have not been able

[7:16] to identify any of the suspects, but if

[7:18] you know anything you might be able to

[7:20] help, call Long View Police.

[7:22] >> Also, only on 12 tonight, police say a

[7:24] man shot his wife in the stomach, but

[7:25] they do believe it was just an accident.

[7:27] It happened on Northwest Connell Street

[7:29] in Hillsboro today. Investigators say a

[7:31] handgun was in the man's jacket pocket

[7:33] and he threw the jacket over a chair and

[7:35] it went off. Now, detectives treated it

[7:37] like a crime scene, but they say the

[7:39] woman was conscious and she told them it

[7:41] was just an accident. That woman is

[7:43] expected to recover.

[7:44] >> A woman threatened by a man who barged

[7:46] into her home is now talking about her

[7:48] horrifying experience. Authorities say

[7:50] that Bradley Snell went into his

[7:52] neighbor's house in Milwaukee back in

[7:54] April armed with a handgun. He demanded

[7:56] drugs and threatened to kill Kelly

[7:58] Finley and her two young children. The

[8:00] SWAT team surrounded the home and

[8:01] eventually shot Snell after a two-hour

[8:03] standoff. Finley says that she plans now

[8:05] to move because it's all just too much

[8:07] for her to remain in the neighborhood.

[8:09] >> His mother's going to remain living

[8:10] here. Even if I could handle still being

[8:12] in the home, I couldn't handle really

[8:14] that. I know it's not her fault, but

[8:16] it's just would be an everyday reminder

[8:18] for me.

[8:19] >> Snell was taken to the hospital and died

[8:21] in the in the emergency room from that

[8:23] gunshot wound. A grand jury has cleared

[8:25] the officers involved in that shooting.

[8:28] >> Now, Portland's first weather at 10.

[8:32] >> Hey, good evening. The weekend is here

[8:33] for most of us, almost here for us here

[8:35] in the First Live Local Weather Center.

[8:37] But tonight, a clear night and

[8:38] temperatures running a little bit warmer

[8:40] out there this evening. Feels like a

[8:41] little change in the weather and sure

[8:42] enough, the well advertised warming

[8:44] trend is just about to begin. Take a

[8:46] look at the current temperatures right

[8:47] now. Most of us in the 50s around towns,

[8:50] as is almost always the case on a clear

[8:52] night. a cold spot in the upper 40s. Uh

[8:54] we made it up to 63 today. Nice

[8:56] comfortable day. Still a little bit

[8:57] below average, but the warmup will

[8:59] continue coming up for tomorrow, folks.

[9:00] Uh we'll have another chilly night

[9:02] tonight. Check out the temperatures

[9:03] overnight. Hillsboro once again. The

[9:05] cold spot 35 degrees will be about 40

[9:07] here in Portland. And we'll talk about

[9:09] the fantastic Mother's Day forecast as

[9:11] well coming up in just a few minutes.

[9:13] >> A local woman accused of killing her

[9:15] husband and then burning his body to

[9:17] cover it up. Will spend another weekend

[9:19] behind bars. Multma County deputies

[9:21] arrested Hazelyn Stomps in February

[9:23] after they found her husband's charred

[9:25] remains. Well, she's been held without

[9:27] bail since her arrest. She had a bail

[9:28] hearing today, but a judge did not set a

[9:30] bail amount. A forensic scientist

[9:33] testified during the hearing today that

[9:34] the man's body had likely burned for

[9:36] hours, if not days, before it was found.

[9:39] >> It just simply had to have happened over

[9:43] a prolonged period of time. This is not

[9:45] a spontaneous event.

[9:47] Hazelyn Stomps first told investigators

[9:49] her husband disappeared when they met up

[9:51] with two men along the Sandy River near

[9:53] Corbett. She has pleaded not guilty to

[9:55] the charges. A woman accused of trying

[9:57] to sell her daughter for sex has been

[9:59] sentenced. A judge sentenced Ria Ham to

[10:01] 5 years in prison. Investigators say she

[10:03] and her husband Christopher Dudley went

[10:06] online to sell their little 5-year-old

[10:08] daughter for sex. Instead, they hooked

[10:09] up with an undercover agent. Ham pleaded

[10:11] guilty to the charges in no in December.

[10:13] Her husband is already serving a 25-year

[10:16] sentence.

[10:21] >> Clark County has now two confirmed cases

[10:23] of the H1N1 flu virus tonight.

[10:26] Washington state health authorities say

[10:27] one case is a boy at Sky Ridge Middle

[10:30] School in Camas. The other is a boy at

[10:32] Sarah J. Anderson Elementary in

[10:34] Vancouver. A regional health officer

[10:36] says both boys are recovering right now.

[10:38] A secret bio festival put on by the

[10:40] elementary school did go on as planned.

[10:43] Some parents say they can't stop

[10:44] everything for the flu.

[10:47] >> I'm a little nervous, but I'm not going

[10:48] to be freaked out. This is Cinco de

[10:52] Mayo. It's a party. You got to live.

[10:56] >> Health officials are now treating this

[10:57] outbreak like a seasonal flu outbreak.

[10:59] They recommend that you take some safety

[11:01] precautions just as you would for the

[11:03] fall flu season.

[11:06] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.

[11:08] Local business owners arrive at work

[11:10] today only to find Fox 12's most wanted

[11:12] had already been there.

[11:14] >> I'm in awe on this. It's there was no

[11:16] reason for them to to do that.

[11:17] >> How you can help the owners track down a

[11:19] bold burglar. Workers at a local pet

[11:22] store are demanding answers after a

[11:23] clever crook played a mean trick on

[11:25] them.

[11:26] >> Well, they bleached the money and they

[11:27] went over with like a home computer.

[11:30] >> How they used funny money to pull off

[11:32] their heist. He's 92 years old and

[11:35] busted for drinking and driving. And

[11:37] even after past problems, the man is

[11:39] still behind the wheel. And it can be a

[11:43] dangerous way to ride the road.

[11:46] Tonight, why motorcycle safety is more

[11:48] than just wearing a good helmet. And

[11:50] also, we'll have the latest on the

[11:51] possibilities of a new radar along the

[11:53] Pacific Northwest Coast.

[11:56] >> You're watching the 10:00 news first

[11:58] live local.

[14:36] York City and how traffic lights can

[14:39] >> Join us tonight for the 11:00 news for

[14:41] live local.

[14:49] Long View police are on the hunt for Fox

[14:50] 12's most wanted, a smash and grab

[14:52] suspect who broke into a convenience

[14:53] store. Cops say the theft happened early

[14:55] Thursday morning at Yunes Market in

[14:57] Delhi on Pacific Way and it was a

[15:00] newspaper delivery person who tipped

[15:01] them off the crime. KPTV Sophie Song

[15:04] reports now from Long View.

[15:07] >> Cops say the suspect threw a big rock

[15:09] right through the front door. Once

[15:11] inside, he didn't get away with too much

[15:13] before the alarm system likely scared

[15:15] him away.

[15:16] >> Thanks.

[15:18] >> At Yun's Market and Deli,

[15:20] >> hey, how are you doing? Employee Randy

[15:22] Benson knows most of her customers by

[15:25] name.

[15:25] >> Hey.

[15:26] >> So, to have someone break into what she

[15:28] calls a family store really upset her.

[15:30] >> Being here in the evening, um, I was

[15:32] very afraid. I've never been robbed

[15:34] before, and thank goodness that it

[15:36] wasn't well on my on my watch.

[15:38] >> Long View police say just after 2:00

[15:40] a.m. Thursday morning, someone used a

[15:42] rock to smash the front door of the

[15:44] convenience store. They say the suspect

[15:46] jumped over the front counter, then

[15:47] stole several packs of cigarettes,

[15:49] nothing more. You can't imagine wanting

[15:51] to break into a store just for a pack of

[15:53] cigarettes. I mean, doesn't get much

[15:55] lower than that.

[15:56] >> Cops say a newspaper delivery person

[15:58] caught the suspect in the act and tipped

[16:00] them off. They're now reviewing

[16:02] surveillance video from the store. Randy

[16:04] says the alarm system may have scared

[16:06] the thief off, not giving him much time

[16:08] to take more than just a few smokes.

[16:11] >> If they couldn't afford the cigarettes,

[16:12] I've pulled it out of my purse or I have

[16:14] even wrote it down on my own charge and

[16:15] had it taken out of my check on Sunday.

[16:17] Customers think the location of the

[16:19] store, tucked away in a quieter part of

[16:21] town, made it an easy target.

[16:23] >> It's It's convenient to the people that

[16:25] live up here, but it's also convenient

[16:26] to the people that looking to make a

[16:28] quick buck.

[16:29] >> Tonight, the front door is fixed, and

[16:31] Randy says they've put in new security

[16:33] measures to prevent this from happening

[16:35] again. Cops say the suspect is a white

[16:38] man in his late teens to early 20s. He

[16:40] was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and

[16:42] baseball cap at the time of the

[16:44] break-in. Anyone with information is

[16:46] asked to contact Long View police.

[16:48] Reporting in Long View tonight, Sophie

[16:50] Stone, the 10 o'clock news.

[16:52] >> Tonight, police are trying to track down

[16:54] the crooks who used some funny money at

[16:56] a local pet store. The owner of A Toz

[16:58] Pets in Southeast Portland says someone

[17:00] passed a fake $100 bill and ripped off

[17:03] the store. KPTV's David Wilson explains.

[17:06] >> And if you look out in the light, you

[17:08] still see the the bar. You see the face

[17:10] in there. They just have to be the right

[17:12] ones. At first glance, this greenback

[17:15] may look and feel like a real $100 bill.

[17:18] And while it's tough to see with our

[17:20] cameras, a closer look actually reveals

[17:22] a faded portrait of Abraham Lincoln, the

[17:26] face on a $5 bill.

[17:28] >> They bleach the money and they print

[17:30] over it with a regular home computer.

[17:32] According to Bugan, surveillance

[17:34] pictures taken inside his store earlier

[17:36] this week show two women and a man

[17:38] picking out an $8 bag of bird seed and

[17:40] then paying for the seed with a phony

[17:42] $100 bill. We blurred the people's faces

[17:45] because police haven't said whether

[17:47] they're the focus of the investigation.

[17:50] Bugan says in this down economy, a loss

[17:52] like that hurts, especially since it's

[17:54] his birthday.

[17:56] >> Cost me $92. It was my birthday present

[17:59] and I don't like it. And while Bugan is

[18:01] certain the people on surveillance are

[18:03] the customers who passed the bad money,

[18:05] no one knows if they did it on purpose.

[18:07] But Bugan and the police hope to find

[18:10] out.

[18:10] >> Well, I'd like to have the woman come in

[18:12] and give me my $92 and say she was

[18:14] innocent.

[18:17] And if not, then they could be arrested

[18:19] and put in jail like they should be.

[18:22] >> David Wilson, the 10:00 news.

[18:27] Portland police need your help finding a

[18:29] missing woman tonight. 23-year-old

[18:30] Savannah Koul's family last saw her on

[18:33] March 1st at her mom's home in Northwest

[18:35] Portland. They say that she last signed

[18:37] on to her MySpace page 3 days later, but

[18:40] they haven't heard from her since.

[18:41] Family members say Savannah has a

[18:43] medical condition and if left untreated

[18:45] could put her in danger. Now she is

[18:47] about 56,

[18:48] 140 lbs with long brown hair and hazel

[18:51] eyes.

[18:53] Two Oregonians are being honored tonight

[18:54] for their help that led to two arson

[18:56] arrests. Eric Totten received a $1,000

[18:59] reward today for helping officers catch

[19:02] a person uh suspected of setting fire to

[19:04] Lyall Elementary School in Dallas.

[19:05] Meanwhile, authorities recognize Cle

[19:07] Knox during a presentation today in

[19:09] Stton. Firefighters say she helped them

[19:12] solve 13 arson, all involving damaged

[19:14] cars and houses. This week is arson

[19:17] awareness week. Every ounce counts for

[19:20] beer drinkers and lawmakers may be

[19:22] helping them get their money's worth

[19:23] soon. The House passed a bill yesterday

[19:25] known as the Honest Pint Act. Now, the

[19:27] bill doesn't force taverns to pour a

[19:29] full 16 pint, but it would reward those

[19:32] who do. Proper porers would get

[19:34] recognized with stickers that

[19:36] acknowledge that their pints are the

[19:38] real deal. Lawmakers say no state money

[19:40] would go to this program. The businesses

[19:42] would pay for the stickers themselves.

[19:46] Well, the Oregon [music] State House

[19:47] says it's trying to help us all live

[19:49] green. Tonight, lawmakers have approved

[19:50] a bill to reduce greenhouse gas

[19:52] emissions. A measure in California

[19:54] inspired the mission. It's designed to

[19:56] reduce those emissions from cars and

[19:58] trucks during the next decade. It would

[20:00] also require repair shops to make sure

[20:02] that tires are properly inflated for

[20:04] best fuel mileage. The Senate will still

[20:07] need to vote on that bill.

[20:10] And Fox 12 is on Pump Patrol tonight. If

[20:12] you're hitting the road to visit mom

[20:13] this weekend, you may notice a slight

[20:15] jump in prices. The national average of

[20:17] regular unleted rose 2 cents to 216 a

[20:20] gallon. In Oregon, the cost is about 231

[20:22] a gallon. Drivers in Washington are

[20:25] paying 10 cents more with the average

[20:26] price sitting at 241 a gallon.

[20:30] >> Coming up on the 10:00 news, a Northwest

[20:32] woman dies mysteriously while on an

[20:34] exotic vacation in Thailand. Why her

[20:36] family here in the States hasn't been

[20:38] able to figure out what killed her.

[20:40] Also, could more kids be in Octoom's

[20:42] future? What Nadia Sulleman saying about

[20:44] the possibility of having more children?

[20:47] And developing news, late breaking

[20:48] details about those wildfires in

[20:50] Southern California. See what

[20:51] firefighters are facing right now and

[20:53] what's in store tomorrow.

[20:55] >> And if you headed to work early this

[20:56] morning or walk the kids to the bus

[20:57] stop, you know it was chilly out there.

[20:59] You know, parts of the metro area down

[21:00] in the 30s. Tonight, almost as cold.

[21:02] Some of them some of the westside

[21:04] locations like Newport, Salem, Kelo down

[21:06] in the 30s once again. But the big

[21:07] warmup coming for the weekend.

[21:13] You're watching the 10:00 news. First,

[21:46] water. You know the control you have

[21:48] [music] when you're cooking and how you

[21:51] can always count on natural gas. Oregon

[21:54] homes using high [music] efficiency

[21:55] natural gas appliances instead of

[21:57] electric emit an average of 20% [music]

[22:00] less greenhouse gases, making your use

[22:02] of natural gas healthier for our planet.

[23:19] Williams.

[23:21] >> Smooth

[23:23] gets them every time.

[23:25] >> Richard, come to edit office, please.

[23:27] Richard, edit office.

[23:29] >> Why, Billy D? It's not about being

[23:31] smooth. Yeah, but Billy D could give

[23:33] people dates. No, it's about putting

[23:35] people in a car they love.

[23:37] >> Some of us wouldn't mind a date here and

[23:38] there.

[23:40] >> Talking for the love of cars.

[23:43] This news segment is brought to you by

[23:45] Old Chicago.

[24:23] One of the oldest florist shops around

[24:24] Portland is feeling the pinch of the

[24:26] economic crisis despite it being

[24:28] Mother's Day weekend. The owner of

[24:30] Birkhart's Flower Shop in Hillsboro says

[24:32] business is down this year. However, she

[24:34] does say no one seems to forget this

[24:36] holiday and she has had steady business

[24:38] that is different from past years.

[24:42] We're we're seeing um the average sale

[24:45] price has gone up a little bit, but

[24:48] we're not getting we're not seeing the

[24:50] lower end uh purchases. So, I think the

[24:53] people that have money to spend are

[24:54] spending it.

[24:56] >> She also says they are always prepared

[24:58] for last minute shoppers. So, if you

[24:59] haven't gotten mom anything yet, there

[25:01] is still time.

[25:03] >> Well, the Oregon Zoo is celebrating

[25:04] Mother's Day a little bit early by

[25:05] honoring moms of a different kind. After

[25:07] counting votes from zoo visitors, the

[25:09] zoo is declared rose to the Asian

[25:11] elephant as mom of the year. Koko the

[25:13] chimpanzeee came in second place with

[25:16] Molly the Columbus monkey placing third.

[25:19] The zoo isn't surprised that Rose 2 won.

[25:21] You're probably not either. Her

[25:22] popularity really increased when she

[25:24] gave birth to baby Simudra. Can't get

[25:27] enough of these pictures. I know last

[25:28] year.

[25:32] >> Hey, along with the clear skies this

[25:33] weekend, we have a full moon coming up

[25:35] tomorrow night. right now. Well, looks

[25:37] close. We'll have the updated forecast

[25:39] coming up and let you know how long the

[25:40] sunshine is going to stick around in

[25:42] just [music] a few minutes.

[25:43] >> Also tonight, a military rifle and a

[25:45] dozen rounds. Appropriate for an army

[25:47] post, but not a kid's locker. What

[25:49] happened to a teenager when his friends

[25:51] found the weapon?

[25:52] >> Also, renegade boat is caught on camera.

[25:54] And no, this is no movie set. See if

[25:56] deputies were able to stop it before it

[25:58] crashed.

[25:59] >> And you see them on the road. But

[26:01] motorcycle safety isn't just for bikers.

[26:03] Why drivers have to be just as careful.

[29:41] We have some new information tonight

[29:42] about fire season 2009 raging through

[29:45] Southern California. Just about an hour

[29:46] ago, we learned that the total area

[29:48] burned is now 8,600 acres. And that's

[29:51] more than double the estimate

[29:52] firefighters made earlier today.

[29:54] >> And now they're trying to save just as

[29:55] many homes as they can. About 80 homes

[29:57] are nothing but rubble tonight. 30,000

[30:00] people have been evacuated from the

[30:02] area. That's about the population of

[30:03] McMinnville to put that into

[30:05] perspective. for KPTV. Casey Steaggle

[30:07] now reports from Santa Barbara.

[30:10] >> More homes destroyed in the Santa

[30:11] Barbara wildfire. Dozens and dozens

[30:14] burned to the ground or damaged by a

[30:16] blaze coming down from the mountains

[30:18] overlooking the Southern California

[30:20] coast known for its sprawling mansions.

[30:23] More than 30,000 people ordered to

[30:25] evacuate. Thousands more have been

[30:27] warned. Be ready to leave on a moment's

[30:29] notice. That's how fast this fire is

[30:32] spreading. It was a nightmare

[30:33] >> and it became a very serious situation

[30:36] very quickly.

[30:37] >> The blaze jumping a highway pushing more

[30:40] than 2,000 firefighters to their limits.

[30:43] >> All hell broke loose. Uh we saw the fire

[30:46] spread laterally across the top of the

[30:48] city.

[30:48] >> This is an air war as well as a ground

[30:51] battle. More than two dozen air tankers

[30:53] and helicopters are dropping water and

[30:55] flame retardant. Some people who are

[30:57] still in their homes fighting smaller

[30:59] flames the best they can. It may not be

[31:02] a whole lot, but I at least feel like it

[31:04] it it takes away from the helplessness

[31:06] of just uh you know, not being able to

[31:08] do anything.

[31:09] >> Conditions are tough. High winds, hot,

[31:12] dry weather, and thick vegetation that's

[31:14] ready to burn. Evacuees and shelters

[31:16] worried they'll have no homes to even

[31:19] return to.

[31:20] >> And the homes are really close together,

[31:22] and everybody has trees and shrubs in

[31:24] the yard, so they'll all go. The number

[31:26] of homes that look like this, nothing

[31:28] more than a pile of rubble, is expected

[31:30] to climb as damaged crews are on the

[31:32] scene assessing the situation hour by

[31:35] hour in Santa Barbara, California.

[31:37] Caseysteagle, Fox News.

[31:39] >> We want to check in now with

[31:40] meteorologist Drew Jackson. Drew, what

[31:42] can firefighters expect tomorrow?

[31:44] >> You know what? It is improving here

[31:45] tonight, Wayne. It looks like the

[31:47] situation overall isn't going to change

[31:49] all that much in Southern California,

[31:50] but there was some improvement today.

[31:52] High pressure off the coast has been

[31:54] directing winds from the north into this

[31:56] area. That comes downhill. That's a

[31:58] warming wind. But look at the difference

[32:00] in Santa Barbara. Yesterday it was 100°.

[32:02] Today just 71 as some of that ocean air

[32:05] was able to push inland just a bit. But

[32:08] up in some of the higher elevations away

[32:10] from that ocean air, the wind was still

[32:11] blowing. And this evening, as expected,

[32:13] that sundowner wind, that wind coming

[32:16] from land to sea downhill did pick up a

[32:19] little bit. So, it does look like the

[32:21] winds are still an issue. It's still

[32:22] quite warm and no significant changes

[32:25] are expected in the next couple days.

[32:26] I'm Drew Jackson, the 10:00 news.

[32:28] >> Thanks, Drew. Stay with Fox 12 for

[32:29] continuing coverage of the California

[32:31] wildfires all weekend long and in

[32:34] between newscast. We will bring you

[32:35] updates online at kptv.com.

[32:40] >> I'm Kevin Kawari. Here's a look at

[32:41] what's coming up new tonight on the

[32:43] 11:00 news. Caught on camera, police say

[32:45] a woman stole vending machines with her

[32:47] young daughter by her side. how cops

[32:49] caught up with her. Was it a setup? A

[32:52] robber point the gun at a clerk, then

[32:54] seems to attack a customer and make off

[32:56] with her. Tonight, they're on the run in

[32:58] the Northwest, but cops say they're not

[33:00] so sure it was a kidnapping. Obama's

[33:03] accepting resignations for the photo

[33:05] shoot that sent New Yorkers into a 9/11

[33:07] panic. See who lost his job for this

[33:09] Midtown Manhattan flyover. Plus, some

[33:11] furry friends may have saved a toddler's

[33:14] life. How Bear and Little Bill helped

[33:16] lead searchers to a little boy who was

[33:18] lost in the woods. That and much more

[33:21] coming up at the top of the hour on the

[33:22] 11 o'clock news.

[33:26] >> In tonight's high school spotlight,

[33:28] dozens of Latino students are getting a

[33:29] head start paying for their college

[33:31] education thanks to the support of local

[33:33] businesses. Through the Hispanic

[33:35] Metropolitan Chamber, $128,000

[33:38] has been awarded to 46 students. Here's

[33:41] KPTV's Julie Growert. It is through

[33:44] education that we can achieve the

[33:46] American dream.

[33:47] >> Those dreams are coming true for dozens

[33:49] of local Latino high school students

[33:51] thanks to Gail Castillo and the rest of

[33:53] the Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber.

[33:55] >> We understand that education is a way of

[33:59] bringing people up uh economically and

[34:01] contributing to our workforce. I believe

[34:03] that it's very very important to

[34:05] appreciate these uh these young people,

[34:08] this this young talent with

[34:10] scholarships, money, and all the support

[34:12] we can give them and encouragement so

[34:14] that they can take our places and fill

[34:16] our shoes when our day is done.

[34:18] >> Prominent local attorney Anel Lopez was

[34:21] the keynote speaker at this year's

[34:22] awards banquet where 46 students were

[34:25] honored for their civic and academic

[34:27] excellence with scholarships ranging

[34:29] from $2,000 to $8,000.

[34:32] money that helps relieve financial

[34:34] pressure for students like Elizabeth

[34:35] Guzman, who received $8,000 from Nike.

[34:39] >> College is such a big deal for me, and I

[34:41] want to succeed in life and continue my

[34:43] education, and this will make it a

[34:46] little bit easier.

[34:46] >> Guzman, a senior at Hood River Valley

[34:48] High School, is looking forward to using

[34:50] that money to help pay for her freshman

[34:52] year at Bamit University next year.

[34:55] It'll make me focus more on my studies

[34:57] and not so much about money, which is

[34:59] such an amazing, you know, feeling, not

[35:01] having to worry about money so much.

[35:03] >> More focus on what's in the books

[35:05] instead of what's in the bank is just

[35:06] what Guzman will need as she begins her

[35:08] studies in biology and premed. But extra

[35:11] confidence will come from knowing that

[35:13] her community is rooting for her. I've

[35:15] been doing this year after year after

[35:17] year because I believe in the message to

[35:19] not only to the uh the recipients but

[35:22] also to the community that we stand

[35:23] behind our young people just like

[35:26] anybody else.

[35:26] >> Julie Growert, the 10:00 news.

[35:30] >> All right, the pressure is on now. Chief

[35:32] Meteorologist Mark Nelson joins us now.

[35:34] You've said you've been saying we're

[35:36] going to have a good weekend and

[35:37] Mother's Day

[35:38] >> still coming. Okay. And in fact, we've

[35:40] bumped up Sunday's temperature by a

[35:42] notch or two. So,

[35:42] >> okay. I was going to say if things were

[35:44] going downhill on Sunday, we might have

[35:46] a little problem.

[35:46] >> Yeah, you wouldn't have been happy,

[35:47] would you? [laughter] If we had a little

[35:48] issue during the commercial break, uh,

[35:50] no, things look great for this weekend.

[35:51] We have clear skies out there right now.

[35:53] There is the almost full moon. Tomorrow

[35:54] night, it'll be the full flower moon, I

[35:56] guess, because you start to see a lot of

[35:57] flowers in May.

[35:58] >> I looked that up on the calendar. Pretty

[35:59] smart, huh? Okay, take a look at the

[36:01] clear skies there, but you see the

[36:03] temperatures for today. Uh, boy, they

[36:04] were comfortable up in the lower 60s.

[36:06] And this enabled Hazel, I think that's

[36:09] the name, Hazel, Hazel Holiday, to get a

[36:11] great picture of a bald eagle nest. This

[36:13] is out in Rufus. And you can see the the

[36:15] bald eagle there. So the two babies. She

[36:18] said they sit in the nest for about 20

[36:19] weeks, which seems like a long time, but

[36:21] I guess they take a while to grow. Um

[36:23] maybe looks a little precarious there

[36:24] straddling the different power lines,

[36:26] but apparently they do just fine up

[36:28] there. So uh thanks for the viewer

[36:30] photos. We all always appreciate it when

[36:31] you folks send us the pictures. photos

[36:33] at kptv.com.

[36:35] That is the web address or the email

[36:37] address that you send those to. As I

[36:38] said, low 60s today here in Portland. We

[36:40] should jump about we think about seven

[36:42] degrees for tomorrow. I think tomorrow

[36:43] we should be right around 70 here west

[36:44] of the Cascades. And east side you will

[36:46] see temperatures really warm up. I think

[36:47] spots east side will be near 80 or maybe

[36:49] above 80 even the lowest elevations on

[36:52] Sunday, places like the Dallas and

[36:54] Hermiston. And we should be just a notch

[36:56] or two warmer tonight as well. Not a

[36:58] whole lot to talk about here. We've got

[36:59] pretty much clear skies offshore for

[37:00] now. H could have a high cloud or two

[37:03] passing over during the daytime

[37:04] tomorrow. So, high pressure is going to

[37:05] settle in. High pressure sinking air.

[37:07] Uh, warmer air mass moving in up above.

[37:09] That sits over us by Sunday, but watch

[37:11] what happens pretty quickly here Sunday

[37:12] night into Monday. The cold air is going

[37:15] to come down on in from the Gulf of

[37:16] Alaska. So, another shot of cool weather

[37:18] coming up with showers early next week.

[37:20] And our rain forecast shows the case of

[37:22] uh kind of severe clear coming up for

[37:24] tomorrow. Some high clouds Sunday, but

[37:25] our models seem to back off a little bit

[37:27] on that. So, they say the rain isn't

[37:28] going to show up until Sunday night.

[37:30] Okay, let's talk about the weather

[37:31] radar. We mentioned this briefly last

[37:32] night. Uh we have a weather radar.

[37:34] National Weather Service has one up in

[37:35] Seattle, one in Portland. They're

[37:36] located inland. Not the best location

[37:39] for monitoring coastal storms. They do a

[37:41] pretty decent job, but uh President

[37:43] Obama's newest budget. The proposal,

[37:46] this hasn't passed Congress, but the

[37:47] proposal is for a brand new radar on the

[37:49] southern Washington coast, which would

[37:51] go right about here, which would really

[37:52] fill in this hole that we do have there.

[37:54] Uh what you don't see often here is that

[37:56] uh this area in yellow that indicates

[37:58] the coverage what we can see in the sky

[38:01] falling or in the air below 10,000 ft.

[38:04] But if we add that radar, we will open

[38:07] up all this to our eyes, basically our

[38:09] meteorological eyes. So this could be

[38:10] very helpful. You can read all about it.

[38:12] It's on the weather blog. I just put

[38:13] that posting on there tonight. That's a

[38:14] kptv.com. A whole presentation about uh

[38:17] what that would entail coming up here.

[38:19] That could happen within two years, by

[38:20] the way, if that gets done. Okay. 73 to

[38:22] the Dallas tomorrow. 72 coming up at

[38:24] Pendleton. Beautiful weekend coming up.

[38:26] Enjoy it because the rain does come back

[38:28] Sunday night and Monday. Look for a high

[38:30] temperature about 55 at Government Camp.

[38:32] Uh into the 40s at Timberline and west

[38:35] of the Cascades. Great day even at the

[38:36] coast. It should be mostly sunny and I

[38:38] think we'll be right around 70 here in

[38:39] the western valleys. Hillsboro 70° 69 at

[38:42] Lake Owiggo. East side of town. No east

[38:44] wind out of the gorge. Not one of those

[38:45] situations, but uh enough of the onshore

[38:49] flow, the cool ocean air backing off to

[38:51] let temperatures make a jump. We will be

[38:52] chilly in the morning, but watch it jump

[38:54] in the afternoon up to about 70°. 7-day

[38:56] forecast. Then, as I said, the big

[38:58] change comes up on Monday. Off and on

[39:00] rain next week, but the temperature

[39:01] should stay near or maybe a little above

[39:03] or a little below normal.

[39:08] Should have known better in tonight's

[39:10] final cut. Like the 92year-old who was

[39:12] old enough to know better [music] than

[39:13] to be arrested for drunk driving. But

[39:16] here, why some say the cops should have

[39:17] known better than to send him to jail.

[39:19] Another suspect was only 13. But you'd

[39:22] think he would have known better than to

[39:23] do what landed him in some really big

[39:25] trouble. And you know better than to

[39:28] ride your motorcycle at speeds above

[39:29] [music] 100 mph down the freeway. But

[39:32] apparently some don't. And we're taking

[39:34] a look at some [music] recent local

[39:36] cases. Final Cut is next.

[39:40] >> You're watching the 10:00 news. First

[40:53] You wouldn't dive into a pool without

[40:55] water. You wouldn't light a match if you

[40:58] smelled gas. So why would you do your

[41:02] banking anywhere besides a credit union?

[41:04] Credit unions are federally insured and

[41:06] locally owned, so their only interest is

[41:08] you. And opening your [music] account

[41:10] has never been easier. To learn more,

[41:15] Credit Union of Oregon. So smart, it's

[41:18] obvious. How you can get a steal of a

[41:21] deal from the police. Plus everything

[41:22] else you need to know next in the Fox 12

[41:24] Final Pack.

[41:31] >> From early in the morning until late at

[41:33] night, mom is on the move. Galaxy

[41:35] family, health, [music] errands, work,

[41:37] friends,

[41:38] and that's just Monday. Let mom relax

[41:42] this Mother's Day with a perfectly

[41:44] affordable gift from Massage Envy.

[41:48] convenient hours and locations, and all

[41:50] available on her schedule. Mom's job is

[41:53] 24/7, [music]

[41:54] which makes an hour of relaxation from

[41:56] Massage Envy the perfect gift.

[42:00] [music]

[42:00] >> I've had asthma forever. I've had asthma

[42:03] for as long as I can remember.

[42:05] >> 10 years.

[42:06] >> I used to wonder why my medicine

[42:08] wouldn't help prevent help prevent my

[42:10] symptoms from coming back.

[42:11] >> I just figured if it couldn't get any

[42:13] better.

[42:13] >> And then I found out something I didn't

[42:14] know. I found out there are two main

[42:16] causes of asthma symptoms. Airway

[42:18] constriction [music] you feel and

[42:19] inflammation you may not. Most medicines

[42:22] don't treat both. So my doctor

[42:24] prescribed Advare. Adver treats both

[42:26] main causes [music] to help prevent

[42:27] symptoms in the first place.

[42:29] >> Adver contains saluterol. Saluterol may

[42:31] increase the chance of asthma related

[42:33] death. So Adverb is not for asthma

[42:34] that's well controlled on another

[42:36] controller medicine. Adverb will not

[42:37] replace fast acting inhalers for sudden

[42:39] symptoms and should not be taken more

[42:41] than twice a day. Talk to your doctor

[42:43] about the risks and benefits of Advare.

[42:45] If you take Advare, see your doctor if

[42:47] your asthma does not improve or gets

[42:49] worse.

[42:49] >> If you're still having symptoms, ask

[42:51] your doctor how to help prevent them

[42:52] with Advare.

[42:53] >> Find out how to get your first full

[42:54] prescription free at advare.com. [music]

[42:57] Advver. Now you know.

[43:03] Stand by the final cut in 3 2 1. Cue

[43:06] them. The final cut begins with news

[43:07] from around the Northwest tonight. And a

[43:09] dream vacation for a newly engaged

[43:11] couple did not have the happy ending

[43:12] they expected. A Seattle woman died

[43:15] while vacationing in Thailand just days

[43:17] after her fiance popped the question. He

[43:20] says they both started feeling sick when

[43:21] they moved into a room with air

[43:23] conditioning, but she just kept getting

[43:25] worse.

[43:26] >> She couldn't breathe. She was vomiting

[43:29] and I tried to run her to a hospital and

[43:33] she ended up passing within maybe 12

[43:37] hours of the first symptoms.

[43:39] >> Well, the next night another tourist

[43:41] died after staying in the same room.

[43:44] Doctors suspect a possible poisoning.

[43:46] Her family requested blood and tissue

[43:48] samples for an independent

[43:50] investigation.

[43:53] The final cut is covering news across

[43:54] America tonight and some people in Ohio

[43:57] say a DUI sentence may be a little

[43:58] harsh, but what do you think? A mother

[44:00] called police last year after she saw a

[44:02] man swerving on the road close to where

[44:04] several kids were playing. And police

[44:06] wound up arresting the 92-year-old

[44:08] driver and charged him with a DUI. A

[44:11] judge sentenced him to 10 days in jail,

[44:13] but many think that's too harsh for the

[44:15] elderly man, including the woman who

[44:17] actually called the cops.

[44:19] The reason why we called and the reason

[44:21] why we went ahead with everything was

[44:23] because we wanted his license revoked

[44:26] and we wanted him not to be a danger to

[44:28] himself and to everybody else.

[44:31] >> A judge ordered him released from jail

[44:33] this morning. He will now be on house

[44:34] arrest for the next 18 days. Texting

[44:37] appears to have played a role in a

[44:39] Boston trolley crash tonight. Two

[44:41] trolleys crashed between underground

[44:43] stations, injuring at least 50 people.

[44:45] The Massachusetts Bay Transportation

[44:47] Authority says the conductor admitted to

[44:50] sending a text just prior to the crash.

[44:52] The head of the transportation authority

[44:53] said it was difficult to contain his

[44:55] anger when the conductor admitted to

[44:58] sending the texts. That conductor was

[45:00] seriously hurt. Most victims suffered

[45:02] cuts or minor injuries.

[45:04] >> Wow. A scary discovery at a Louisiana

[45:06] school where authorities say a

[45:07] 13-year-old boy had an assault rifle in

[45:09] his locker. Deputies made the discovery

[45:11] yesterday. Students told school staff

[45:14] that they saw the gun hidden in the

[45:15] boy's locker. Authorities arrested him

[45:18] off campus. They say he also brought a

[45:20] magazine for the gun to school with 12

[45:23] highowered rounds inside.

[45:25] >> Here's something you may not know.

[45:26] Police departments all around the

[45:27] country are selling unclaimed items

[45:29] seized in criminal investigations.

[45:32] >> There cell phones. There are gameboys.

[45:33] There are car stereoss. There are big

[45:35] speakers. There are tool chests. There's

[45:37] going to be sporting good equipment.

[45:38] There's going to be computers. Stolen

[45:41] goods that don't find their owners find

[45:42] their way to the auction block instead.

[45:44] And now those auctions are going online.

[45:47] Tonight at 11, find out how much cash

[45:49] you could save and which websites to go

[45:51] to and how it could help you score an

[45:53] amazing deal on even a car. All that

[45:56] tonight's coming up on the 11:00 news.

[46:00] There's some new details tonight about

[46:01] Octimom Nadia Sullean. Don't expect her

[46:03] to have any more babies. She's having

[46:05] half of her uterus removed this weekend.

[46:07] Sullean gave birth to a couplet in

[46:09] January. She's had 14 kids in all.

[46:12] That's and she says that's enough for

[46:13] her. She says doctors are requiring the

[46:16] operation because they found benign

[46:17] fibroids growing in her uterus. Also,

[46:20] new details tonight involving a former

[46:22] Illinois police sergeant. It's going to

[46:24] be 10 days before Drew Peterson answers

[46:26] allegations that he killed his third

[46:28] wife. A judge moved his arraignment to

[46:31] May 18th because his attorneys just

[46:33] couldn't attend the hearing today.

[46:35] Peterson is charged with drowning his

[46:37] then wife in a bathtub back in 2004. And

[46:40] he's also a suspect in the 2007

[46:42] disappearance of his fourth wife.

[46:45] >> Caught on camera now. An out of control

[46:46] boat got the attention of several people

[46:48] in Minnesota today. Take a look at this.

[46:50] A man living on a lake saw the boat just

[46:52] spinning around in circles right there.

[46:54] The owner of the boat had been tossed

[46:56] out, so sheriff deputies had to figure

[46:58] out how to stop it. Eventually, a deputy

[47:00] was able to jump into the boat and

[47:02] managed to kill the engine. The owner of

[47:04] the boat did not get hurt. Aa pony is

[47:07] alive and well tonight after falling

[47:09] down a 35 foot well. The animals owner

[47:12] says that she tried to step over the

[47:13] hole while following her mother but fell

[47:16] in. Crews lowered a firefighter down

[47:18] into that hole to help bring the pony

[47:20] up. The rescue was a little tough

[47:22] because of all the rain. You can kind of

[47:24] hear it on the microphone of the camera

[47:25] there, but look, the pony comes out and

[47:28] the owners plan to cover up that. Well,

[47:32] >> the final cut goes local now with

[47:34] motorcycle safety. Four people have died

[47:36] in motorcycle accidents just in the past

[47:38] two months. Some of those accidents

[47:40] could have been prevented. KPTV's Andrew

[47:42] Padul is live in Northeast Portland

[47:44] tonight with more on a motorcycle shop

[47:46] working to keep people safe. Andrew,

[47:48] >> well Shauna, you see them more and more

[47:49] motorcycles on roadways and on highways.

[47:51] And with weather that we had today,

[47:53] you'll see them even more come out of

[47:55] eventually. And everyone we talked to

[47:57] saying safety is always a first

[47:58] priority. Engines

[48:02] are rumbling, the chrome is shining, the

[48:04] motorcycles are out.

[48:06] >> It's perfect. We've been living and

[48:07] waiting for this since, you know,

[48:08] snowfall.

[48:09] >> At Harley-Davidson in Gladstone, hitting

[48:11] the road isn't just about getting on a

[48:13] bike. It's about being safe before

[48:15] riding.

[48:16] >> It's important, I think, that they have

[48:17] confidence in the abilities that they're

[48:19] going to possess.

[48:20] >> Safety is a huge concern, and it all

[48:22] starts with what you're wearing. At

[48:24] least when I ride, I like think of my

[48:26] motorcycle gear as the second skin in

[48:28] case anything unfortunate were to

[48:29] happen.

[48:30] >> Just in the last two months, four people

[48:31] were killed in motorcycle crashes in the

[48:33] Portland area. Two of those people were

[48:35] on a motorcycle and died after their

[48:37] bike crashed on Barber Boulevard near

[48:39] Towiliger. And on April 4th, a man died

[48:42] near Southeast 28th in Tolman after his

[48:45] bike crashed near a curve. And at the

[48:47] end of March, a car ran into a

[48:48] motorcycle rider in the area of

[48:50] Southeast 21st in Powell. Those that

[48:52] have been riding for years say sometimes

[48:54] riders can get a little too confident.

[48:57] >> I think those that ride too fast. Um I'm

[49:00] sure that scares everybody whether

[49:02] you're a rider or you're in a car. Um I

[49:05] think that gives the wrong impression of

[49:06] people who ride bikes.

[49:07] >> This Harley-Davidson offers a class

[49:09] called RERS's Edge. It's designed to

[49:12] help riders be ready for the road.

[49:14] focusing on the correct techniques as

[49:16] far as, you know, safe braking and and

[49:18] knowing what your skills are as a rider,

[49:19] you know, before you get into a

[49:21] situation that you may may regret being

[49:23] in later.

[49:25] >> And according to the US Department of

[49:26] Transportation, motorcycle crash

[49:28] fatalities have increased every year for

[49:29] the past 10 years. In 2007, the DOT says

[49:33] nearly 5,200 people died in motorcycle

[49:35] accidents. They say that number is the

[49:37] highest it has been since it started

[49:38] keeping record in 1975. Reporting live

[49:41] from Northeast Portland tonight, Andrew

[49:42] Padulla, the 10:00 news.

[49:45] >> Now to the other bikes, the bicycles.

[49:47] There doesn't have to be a fight for

[49:48] space between bicyclists and walkers.

[49:50] That's the message the city of

[49:51] Portland's trying to get across about

[49:52] the Hawthorne Bridge. The city's Bureau

[49:54] of Transportation handed out bells for

[49:56] cyclists and pedometers for pedestrians

[49:59] today at the bridge. There was also some

[50:00] information about using the bridge and

[50:02] other paths safely. Some cyclists we

[50:04] talked to say it's just a matter of

[50:06] being courteous.

[50:08] I think in general cyclists just need to

[50:11] behave, you know, be careful. Everyone

[50:13] should watch out for each other.

[50:17] >> All right, slow down.

[50:18] >> City staff will be out again on Monday

[50:20] with handouts on the Hawthorne Bridges

[50:22] Southside.

[58:31] >> Put the power of Fox 12 News into the

[58:33] palm of your hand with Fox 12 to go.

[58:37] Now on Fox 12 Oregon, this is the 11:00

[58:41] news. New at 11 tonight, iPods, stereos,

[58:44] jewelry, and cars, all for a fraction of

[58:46] what they usually cost. How you can make

[58:49] crime work for you if you know where to

[58:50] get the good deals. Is it a robbery, a

[58:53] kidnapping, or something even more

[58:55] sinister? An armed robber leaves with a

[58:57] female customer and now cops want to

[58:59] know if she was his partner in the

[59:01] crime. But first, police arrest a woman

[59:03] accused of stealing an entire vending

[59:05] machine. See the surveillance pictures.

[59:07] I'm Kevin Kawari. And now, here's a look

[59:09] at Fox 12's top stories. We begin

[59:10] tonight with KPTV's Brent Weisberg with

[59:12] what's new at 11. A woman is in jail

[59:15] tonight accused of stealing several

[59:17] vending machines throughout town. And

[59:19] now, police say it's all caught on

[59:21] camera. Albany police say Jacine Orur

[59:23] would pose as an employee for a vending

[59:25] machine company. Police say surveillance

[59:27] video shows her stealing a machine from

[59:28] a grocery store in North Albany last

[59:30] month. In that case, police say or

[59:33] brought her seven-year-old daughter

[59:34] along. Police say they think or is

[59:36] responsible for stealing another vending

[59:38] machine earlier this month in Lebanon.

[59:40] The owner at the Fire Pit Tavern says

[59:42] this isn't the first time his machines

[59:44] have been targeted and the theft means

[59:46] charities will be hit hard as well. In

[59:48] uh Lebanon, for instance, we donate to

[59:50] the Lebanon Booster Club at the high

[59:52] school. And in Albany, we donate to the

[59:54] Veterans Commemoration Association,

[59:56] which runs the Albany Veterans Day

[59:58] parades.

[59:58] >> Police say Jacqueline Or is expected to

[60:00] make her next court appearance later

[60:02] this month on charges of theft and

[60:04] vandalism. All told, Albany police say

[60:06] that there has been about $10,000 worth

[60:09] of damage caused by Miss Orur. Reporting

[60:11] in News Control tonight, Brent Weisber,

[60:13] the 11:00 news. Just a week after one

[60:16] man broke in and stole money from this

[60:17] U-Haul center last night, there were a

[60:19] pair of burglars and they were both

[60:20] caught on camera. It's a story you'll

[60:22] see only on 12. You can see one of Fox

[60:24] 12's most wanted head to the front of

[60:26] the store, pausing to pull up his

[60:28] hoodie. This is where the owners say

[60:29] they used to keep a key to the safe, but

[60:31] after finding no key, the burglar

[60:33] decides to take the whole thing. Off he

[60:35] goes with the 200 lb safe. The owners

[60:38] say the burglars have cost them

[60:39] thousands of dollars in repairs and

[60:41] replacement. Look at what someone did to

[60:42] the door of another U-Haul center in

[60:44] Clackamus last night. And this is video

[60:46] from last week showing a man tossing a

[60:48] rock through the U-Haul window in

[60:50] Southeast Portland in order to test the

[60:52] alarm system. The company is offering a

[60:54] $1,000 reward for the arrest and

[60:55] conviction of Fox 12's most wanted. If

[60:57] you know how to catch them, call police

[60:59] in Southeast Portland. Mark Ross, the

[61:01] 11:00 news.

[61:02] >> Only on 12. Long View police are on the

[61:04] hunt for Fox 12's most wanted. A smash

[61:06] and grab suspect who broke into a

[61:08] convenience store. Cops say just after 2

[61:11] a.m. Thursday morning, someone used a

[61:13] rock to smash the front door of Market

[61:15] and Delhi on Pacific Way. They say the

[61:18] suspect jumped over the front counter,

[61:19] then stole several packs of cigarettes,

[61:22] nothing more. Cops say a newspaper

[61:24] delivery person caught the suspect in

[61:26] the act and tipped them off. They're now

[61:28] reviewing surveillance video from the

[61:29] store. Employees think the alarm system

[61:32] may have scared the thief off, not

[61:34] giving him much time to take more than

[61:35] just a few smokes. Cops say the suspect

[61:38] is a white man in his late teens to

[61:40] early 20s. He was wearing a dark hooded

[61:42] sweatshirt and a baseball cap at the

[61:44] time of the theft. Anyone with

[61:46] information is asked to contact Long

[61:48] View Police. Reporting in Long View

[61:50] tonight, Sophie Stone, the 11:00 news.

[61:52] >> A Vancouver man is arrested after police

[61:54] say he led them on a high-speed chase

[61:57] through several counties. That chase

[61:59] finally ended on Interstate 205. The

[62:01] whole thing ended here on the Glen

[62:03] Jackson Bridge this morning. A

[62:05] high-speed chase involving a motorcycle

[62:07] and speeds police say exceeded 140 m an

[62:10] hour. Oregon State Police say the chase

[62:13] started south of Woodburn just before

[62:15] 1:00 this morning. A state trooper saw

[62:17] the motorcycle speeding in the

[62:19] northbound lanes. That's when he gave

[62:21] chase. But police say that motorcycle

[62:23] didn't stop and continued onto

[62:25] Interstate 205 at speeds of about 130 m

[62:29] an hour. Eventually, police caught up

[62:31] with the driver of the motorcycle, Clark

[62:32] Seatin of Vancouver and arrested him.

[62:35] But police say the only reason Seatin

[62:37] stopped was because his motorcycle ran

[62:39] out of gas. Now, Satan is facing

[62:42] numerous charges, including attempting

[62:43] to elude and reckless driving as well as

[62:45] having a controlled substance. Reporting

[62:47] over I 205 tonight, Andrew Padulla, the

[62:50] 11:00 news. More local news at 11. Now,

[62:53] hitting a patrol car parked in front of

[62:55] the sheriff's office is a pretty easy

[62:56] way to get arrested. And that's what one

[62:58] man found out today. Washington County

[63:00] deputies arrested Talender Singh today

[63:02] after they say he drove his car into a

[63:04] parked patrol car. They say the

[63:06] 26-year-old walked into the sheriff's

[63:08] office in Beaverton just before doing it

[63:10] and asked about driving crimes. Deputies

[63:12] tell us it's a series of events that

[63:14] certainly don't happen every day.

[63:18] In my 12 years with the sheriff's

[63:20] office, I've never heard of anybody

[63:21] taking their personal vehicle and

[63:22] crashing into a park patrol car. You

[63:24] know, from time to time, we have

[63:26] somebody that's intoxicated hit a patrol

[63:28] car on the side of the road during a

[63:29] traffic accident, but never in a parking

[63:31] lot.

[63:31] >> I can't see.

[63:32] >> Well, other than his curious behavior

[63:34] before the crash, the suspect gave no

[63:36] reason for ramming that patrol car.

[63:40] In our top national headlines tonight,

[63:42] the flap over an Air Force One photo

[63:44] shoot has cost a White House staffer his

[63:47] job. The president has accepted the

[63:49] resignation of Lewis Caldera. He's the

[63:50] director of the White House military

[63:52] office responsible for the photo shoot

[63:54] of the jet, sometimes known as Air Force

[63:56] One, flying low over New York City here.

[63:59] New Yorkers panicked when they caught

[64:01] sight of the low-flying plane, thinking

[64:02] it could be another terrorist attack.

[64:05] Both President Obama and the mayor of

[64:06] New York were furious when they learned

[64:08] about it. Caldera has apologized for the

[64:11] flyover. The Statue of Liberty will

[64:13] reopen to the public again on the 4th of

[64:15] July. It had been closed since the

[64:18] September 11th attacks because of

[64:19] security concerns. The base, pedestal,

[64:22] and lower observation tech deck have

[64:24] already been reopened.

[64:29] Two fire season 2009. Now, more than

[64:31] 30,000 people have had to evacuate in

[64:33] and around Santa Barbara, California,

[64:36] and another 23,000 may be asked to leave

[64:38] at a moment's notice. Firefighters in

[64:41] California bring out the big guns while

[64:42] battling the wildfire in Santa Barbara.

[64:44] A DC10 has joined the fight to bring the

[64:47] raging fires under control. The plane is

[64:49] known as a slurry bomber, and the

[64:51] material you see here being dropped is

[64:53] either a class A foam or gel. Well,

[64:56] these are images of some of the burntout

[64:59] homes. So far, the fire has burned 8,600

[65:01] acres and created a firefighting front

[65:04] nearly 5 m long. And here now is another

[65:07] look as the flames just teared through

[65:09] the hillside. This fire, dubbed the

[65:10] Jesus fire, is uh that's what it's

[65:13] dubbed by officials there is being

[65:14] fueled by dry weather and high winds.

[65:17] Thousands of homes tonight are in danger

[65:19] of being in that fire's path.

[65:24] South Carolina investigators are

[65:26] expanding their search tonight for a

[65:28] missing 17-year-old from New York. It's

[65:30] been two weeks since anyone has seen

[65:32] Britney Drexel. She was last seen on a

[65:34] trip with friends in Myrtle Beach that

[65:36] her mom never gave her permission to go

[65:38] on. Now, her parents are there in South

[65:40] Carolina hoping searchers find their

[65:42] daughter. Friends and family aren't

[65:44] ruling out foul play.

[65:48] In news from around the world tonight,

[65:49] scientists say volcanoes in Congo are

[65:51] showing signs that they're ready to

[65:53] blow. Pools of lava, smoke, and tremors

[65:56] were seen and felt in scientists recent

[65:58] visits to the volcanic peaks. The

[66:01] volcanoes threatened the nearby city's

[66:02] population of more than half a million

[66:04] people. Some people have already left

[66:05] town, and Red Cross workers are making

[66:08] preparations. One of those volcanoes is

[66:10] listed as one of the most eight

[66:11] dangerous volcanoes in the world.

[66:16] In news across the Northwest tonight,

[66:17] surveillance video shows a man holding

[66:19] up a Washington state 7-Eleven and

[66:21] dragging a woman out with him. The

[66:23] robber held the clerk at gunpoint early

[66:25] Wednesday morning and forced her to

[66:27] empty two cash registers. Well, when the

[66:29] robber left, he grabbed a customer

[66:31] around the neck in a chokeold and

[66:33] dragged her outside. Now, the woman was

[66:35] technically and legally kidnapped, but

[66:37] cops say she took off along with the

[66:40] gunman, and they're not clear exactly

[66:42] what happened here. Tonight, sheriff's

[66:43] detectives are still looking for the

[66:45] robber and that woman.

[66:48] >> Now, Portland's first complete forecast

[66:50] at 11 from your first live local weather

[66:53] team.

[66:54] >> Well, here we are. It's Friday night and

[66:55] our weather has improved dramatically

[66:57] from recent days. The sky cleared out

[66:59] nicely today. And there's really nothing

[67:01] heading our direction that'll set us up

[67:02] for a very sunny Saturday. And it does

[67:05] look like it's going to be all dry all

[67:07] weekend. So, that's good news for

[67:08] Mother's Day, even though the clouds may

[67:10] start to roll in a little bit over the

[67:11] weekend. Here's a look at the current

[67:12] temperatures. You can see that it is in

[67:13] the low 50s throughout much of the

[67:15] northwest, much of the Portland area.

[67:17] Farther out towards the west, it is 47

[67:19] at Hillsboro. Quick look outside live

[67:21] right now. This is what it looks like as

[67:23] we look up at a full moon here this

[67:24] evening. Downtown Portland view from our

[67:26] Fox Tower camera. Just looks spectacular

[67:28] out there right now as the sky remains

[67:30] clear. Looking at temperatures around

[67:32] the rest of the Northwest right now. It

[67:34] is in the upper 40s down south into the

[67:36] Wamut Valley. 49 at Salem there. It's 48

[67:38] at Kelso. Atoria is still at 50, but

[67:40] Newport 46. East of the Cascades already

[67:43] down into the mid-30s for Burns and

[67:45] Baker City. It'll be a chilly night

[67:46] across the northwest as temperatures dip

[67:48] into the 30s. Many spots west of the

[67:50] Cascades and east side even colder than

[67:52] that down into the mid20s by sunrise

[67:54] tomorrow morning, but it'll be one of

[67:56] those days that's cold just briefly in

[67:58] the morning, but after the sun rises,

[68:00] the temperature will rise dramatically

[68:02] through the morning hours. So, it'll be

[68:03] quite warm and comfortable later in the

[68:05] day. All right, taking a look at some

[68:06] weather around the rest of the United

[68:07] States. It is quiet here in the

[68:09] Northwest. That is not the case in the

[68:10] middle part of the country. This is 24

[68:12] hours ago. I want you to watch what

[68:14] happens right here in Kansas about this

[68:17] time last night. Boom. Huge cluster

[68:20] thunderstorms pops up. I mean, massive.

[68:22] This was almost the size of a hurricane

[68:23] that moved all the way across the

[68:25] country. 100 mile per hour winds from

[68:27] that thunderstorm complex in portions of

[68:29] Illinois causing all kinds of problems

[68:31] there. And it's even stormy in other

[68:33] parts of the United States here as of

[68:35] right now. So, it is May. It is severe

[68:36] weather season, but of course this time

[68:38] of year in the Northwest, it's when our

[68:40] weather quiets down. You can see that it

[68:42] is all quiet here locally, just a stream

[68:44] or two of clouds out over the Pacific,

[68:46] but a sunny day coming up for tomorrow.

[68:48] Cloud and rain forecast shows that

[68:50] cloud-free sky over the Northwest

[68:52] tomorrow. Later in the day, maybe a

[68:53] shower way up in northern Washington.

[68:55] That's close as they get, though. This

[68:57] white on the map for Sunday indicates

[68:59] the very high thin cloud cover that

[69:01] moves through on Mother's Day Sunday,

[69:03] but it still looks to be a very warm and

[69:05] comfortable day with highs in the

[69:06] mid70s. Some rain though does return

[69:08] late Sunday night into Monday. Low 60s

[69:10] along the coast. A little bit windy

[69:12] there. We're getting to that time of

[69:14] year when that north wind tends to blow

[69:15] and it keeps the coast from really

[69:17] warming up significantly. Mostly sunny

[69:18] though at the coast and inland. Highs

[69:20] will be close to 70 in the inland

[69:21] valleys. Up on Mount Hood, also a sunny

[69:24] and very pleasant day. government camp

[69:25] to 55° Timberline Lodge there at

[69:27] Timberline or at Teline I should say

[69:29] 6,000 ft. 47 the high 70s for the Dallas

[69:32] but 60s elsewhere in central and eastern

[69:34] Oregon and in the Portland area. A

[69:36] beautiful Saturday coming up 42 in the

[69:38] morning. A little chilly but up to 58

[69:39] already by noon. The afternoon high

[69:41] right near 70° and a gentle northwest

[69:44] wind throughout the day. 7-day forecast

[69:45] here shows that Mother's Day Sunday is

[69:47] even warmer at 74. That'll be the

[69:49] warmest day the next few though because

[69:50] temperatures drop back into the low 60s

[69:52] Monday into Tuesday. Little bit of a

[69:54] break from showers Tuesday and Wednesday

[69:56] before they resume again on Thursday.

[69:58] You can catch the latest forecast

[69:59] tomorrow morning on Good Day.

[70:01] >> I've had asthma forever.

[70:03] >> I've had asthma for as long as I can

[70:05] remember. [music]

[70:06] >> 10 years.

[70:07] >> I used to wonder why my medicine

[70:09] wouldn't help prevent

[70:10] >> help prevent my symptoms from coming

[70:12] back.

[70:12] >> I just figured it couldn't get any

[70:13] better.

[70:14] >> And then I found out something I didn't

[70:15] know. I found out there were two main

[70:17] causes of asthma symptoms. Airway

[70:19] constriction [music] you feel and

[70:20] inflammation you may not. Most medicines

[70:22] don't treat both. So my doctor

[70:24] prescribed Adver. Adver treats both main

[70:27] causes to help prevent symptoms in the

[70:29] first place.

[70:29] >> Adver contains Salmeerol. Saluterol may

[70:32] increase the chance of asthma related

[70:33] death. So Adver is not for asthma that's

[70:35] well controlled on another controller

[70:37] medicine. Advare will not replace fast

[70:39] acting inhalers for sudden symptoms and

[70:41] should not be taken more than twice a

[70:42] day. Talk to your doctor about the risks

[70:44] and benefits of Advare. If you take

[70:46] Advare, [music] see your doctor if your

[70:48] asthma does not improve or gets worse.

[70:50] If you're still having symptoms, ask

[70:52] your doctor how to help prevent [music]

[70:53] them with Advare.

[70:54] >> Find out how to get your first full

[70:55] prescription free at advare.com.

[70:58] >> Advare. Now you know.

[71:01] >> Guess they heard. It's hot off the grill
