[0:06] if you were stuck by a metor it would be
[0:08] quite violent uh I'm not assuming that's
[0:11] what happened Mark but that could have
[0:13] done it yes I think their chances are
[0:16] excellent at the moment assuming that
[0:18] the lunar module continues to operate
[0:20] well forgive me if I put you on a spot
[0:22] but how would you classify this
[0:24] situation as regards to these that we
[0:26] are familiar with a little bit I'd say
[0:28] this is a serious uh situation as we
[0:30] have we have ever had in manspace FL
[0:34] there's a lot of speculation that
[0:35] perhaps a meteoroid actually hit the
[0:37] spacecraft and cause the problem that
[0:39] would be a first for man spacecraft what
[0:42] had to work now was the Lambda scent
[0:44] engine if it did not the Apollo 13 would
[0:47] whip around the moon and hurdle back
[0:49] toward Earth but would miss Earth by
[0:51] more than 50,000 miles in an hour of
[0:54] hurried but deliberate activity Jim

[0:58] prepared for the man maneuver there was
[1:01] no uh there was so much debris from the
[1:03] explosion still swirling around their
[1:05] spacecraft that they had trouble taking
[1:07] star SES to align themselves on the
[1:09] right course but they solved their
[1:12] problems and then lit up that precious
[1:14] descent engine it fired right on time
[1:17] and just as long as it should shortly
[1:20] thereafter Houston trackers were able to
[1:22] confirm that Apollo 13 was indeed now on
[1:25] a course and at a speed that assured its
[1:27] half circling the moon and heading home
[1:30] over was the worst tension of the night
[1:32] a night that had kept the lights burning
[1:34] in the astronauts homes and Bruce Morton
