[0:07] This is NBC Nightly News, Tuesday, April

[0:10] 5th, with John Chancellor and David

[0:12] Brinkley reporting from the NBC News

[0:14] Center in New York.

[0:16] >> Good evening. Investigators said today

[0:18] that a hail storm may have been

[0:20] responsible for the deaths of 68 people

[0:22] yesterday when this DC9 jetliner crashed

[0:26] in Georgia. The plane was flying through

[0:28] hail said to have been the size of

[0:30] tennis balls. Hail so large and violent

[0:32] that it broke windows on the plane,

[0:34] including the windshield. More

[0:36] important, the hail may have caused the

[0:38] plane's two jet engines to flame out,

[0:40] leaving the pilot, Captain William

[0:42] McKenzie, with no power and very little

[0:44] chance of bringing his plane down

[0:46] safely. David has more on that. Since he

[0:48] couldn't make it to the airport, he

[0:50] tried desperately to bring the plane

[0:51] down on Highway 92, 30 mi from Atlanta.

[0:54] And here's how that went. With a little

[0:56] luck, he might have made it. He brought

[0:58] it into 92 going in this direction

[1:02] fairly smoothly when the right wing hit

[1:04] an electric pole. That still didn't stop

[1:07] him until he got to Newman's Grocery and

[1:10] hit a parked car and the grocery knocked

[1:12] over the gas pumps, started a fire that

[1:15] started the plane to spinning, tore it

[1:17] apart, and the wreckage wound up over

[1:19] here in a vacant lot. Here's a report

[1:22] from the scene. and Kenley Jones.

[1:25] >> This is something like the view that the

[1:27] pilot of the twin engine DC9 had from

[1:29] the cockpit. As he realized time had run

[1:32] out, he had to put the plane down. He

[1:34] settled on a stretch of road running

[1:36] through the sm
