[0:00] Tonight,
[0:01] back to school. Classrooms in New Town
[0:04] reopen as more children are laid to
[0:07] rest. Reports from Jim Axelrod and Bob
[0:10] or Ela Khano with some of the first
[0:13] responders at the crime scene.
[0:15] >> I was almost wishing that it was full of
[0:17] injured people.
[0:20] Never. Nobody.
[0:22] >> Higher taxes are coming, but who should
[0:24] pay them? Nancy Cordis talks to the
[0:27] speaker of the house about his
[0:28] negotiations with the president. And
[0:31] Elizabeth Palmer in Dunla, Scotland, one
[0:34] place that knows New Town's long road to
[0:37] recovery all too well.
[0:39] >> I think out of the most tragic
[0:41] circumstances, some good does appear.
[0:48] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Scott
[0:51] P.
[0:53] Good evening. More parents than usual
[0:56] walked with their kids as the schools of
[0:58] New Town reopened today. When a family
[1:01] met the stepped up security, there
[1:04] wasn't a sense of fear, but a sense of
[1:06] moving forward together. And this was
[1:09] our favorite image. We were going to
[1:11] write something about it, but then we
[1:13] realized it speaks well enough for
[1:16] itself.
[1:18] Sandy Hook Elementary was the one school
[1:20] that did not reopen. As you know well,
[1:23] 20 first graders were killed there on
[1:25] Friday along with six staff members. The
[1:28] gunman also killed his mother and
[1:30] himself. Jim Axelrod is in New Town
[1:34] where for some this was a new day.
[1:39] >> Many here hope to find comfort in the
[1:41] back to school routine. Mike Morshuk
[1:44] planned to meet his 16-year-old
[1:45] daughter. I'll be waiting outside the
[1:47] car and hopefully a few friends will
[1:49] come over, give him a big hug and a
[1:52] kiss, you know. So,
[1:53] >> Sandy Hoo
