[0:03] >> It's the season finale you will never
[0:05] forget. Dollhouse 98 central Fox
[0:08] tomorrow.
[0:12] >> Tonight, a little Portland history isn't
[0:14] the only thing you'll chew on at this
[0:16] local dance hall. Dirty Dining shows you
[0:18] what health inspectors found in the
[0:19] kitchen of the Crystal Ballroom. A
[0:22] massive explosion caught on camera. See
[0:24] what destroyed this popular shopping
[0:26] mall. A local woman sues her salon for
[0:29] thousands of dollars, saying they ruined
[0:32] her hair.
[0:33] >> Well, you don't prepare for it.
[0:34] >> Find out whether jurors will make the
[0:36] stylists pay up. But first, the local
[0:38] community is on high alert after Fox
[0:41] 12's most wanted pushed their way into
[0:43] an apartment with guns drawn.
[0:45] >> It's scary. I mean, I even get scared.
[0:47] >> Only on 12, what terrified neighbors are
[0:49] saying about the [music] safety of their
[0:50] neighborhood. FIRST ON FOX.
[0:54] >> Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm
[0:55] Shauna Parson
[0:56] >> and I'm W Garcia. Tonight, Fox 12 is
[0:57] helping you prepare for the transition
[0:59] to digital television in two ways.
[1:01] >> Later in the newscast, we will shut down
[1:03] our analog signal so you can see if
[1:05] you're ready for the big switch in June.
[1:07] >> And you'll also have a chance to see our
[1:09] special report, understanding the
[1:10] digital transition that follows this
[1:13] newscast. Now, first on Fox tonight, the
[1:15] search is on for Fox 12's most wanted
[1:17] after cops say three people forced their
[1:19] way into an apartment and held the
[1:21] people inside at gunpoint. It happened
[1:23] just before midnight near the
[1:24] intersection of Northeast 162nd and
[1:26] Burnside in Gresham. KPTV's Mark Henryan
[1:29] is live in Gresham tonight with a story
[1:30] you'll see only on 12. Well, Wayne,
[1:33] police say those crooks had their faces
[1:34] covered and were wearing dark clothes
[1:36] like this sweatshirt when they forced
[1:37] their way into that apartment looking
[1:39] for stuff to steal.
[1:43] Tonight, the people in this apartment
[1:44] say they're still too shaken up to talk
[1:46] about what happened less than 24 hours
[1:48] earlier when police say two men and a
[1:50] woman forced their way into their home
[1:52] with a gun.
[1:53] >> I think it's crazy.
[1:54] >> But for people that live in the area
[1:56] like Britney Taylor, it's crimes like
[1:58] this that are becoming all too common.
[2:00] >> I've seen a lot of things that have gone
[2:02] on and I've seen a lot of people like
[2:03] even in my apartment complex that have
[2:05] stolen things out of cars and are
[2:07] running from it. It's just neighborhoods
[2:08] going downhill. And while many of the
[2:10] details are still under wraps tonight,
[2:12] police say the crooks forced the renters
[2:14] into their living room. While they
[2:15] searched the place for stuff to steal
[2:17] and after they had what they were after,
[2:19] they simply took off. No shots were
[2:21] fired, nobody was injured.
[2:23] >> People get hungry, they get desperate,
[2:24] you know, and I wish they wouldn't do
[2:26] that.
[2:26] >> Alfonso Ellis lives nearby and says
[2:28] while he feels sorry for the victims,
[2:30] he's glad to hear the alleged armed
[2:32] robbery wasn't taken a step further.
[2:34] >> I'm glad there's no one hurt, you know.
[2:36] I'm I'm so happy that nobody was hurt
[2:38] because you can't replace a life, but
[2:39] you can get back your goods, but you
[2:41] can't get back at life.
[2:42] >> Still, the home invasion has others on
[2:44] edge.
[2:44] >> Yeah, it's scary. I mean, I even get
[2:46] scared.
[2:47] >> Like this woman named Judy, who asked
[2:49] that we not show her face. She says what
[2:51] happened at this apartment is likely the
[2:53] result of drugs and gangs. Two things
[2:55] she tells us are getting worse.
[2:57] >> I think it's bad and there's a lot of
[3:00] problems going on in this area. a lot
[3:03] of, you know, drug activity and breaking
[3:06] in places.
[3:07] >> Now, police describe the suspect as two
[3:09] black men and a black woman, all between
[3:10] the ages of 18 and 22 years old. The
[3:13] first man is described as being about 5'
[3:15] 10 in tall with a skinny build. He had
[3:17] the tan shirt around his face and
[3:18] possibly had a smaller pistol. The
[3:20] second man is described as about 5'9 in
[3:22] tall with dark skin. He was wearing a
[3:24] bandana over his face. And the woman is
[3:26] said to have a medium build. She was
[3:28] wearing a black hoodie. If you think you
[3:29] might know who those folks are or
[3:31] anything about this case that could
[3:32] help, please contact Gresham police.
[3:34] Reporting live tonight in Gresham, Mark
[3:35] Hendraan, the 10:00 news.
[3:38] >> You saw it first on the 10:00 news last
[3:40] night, Ross sewage flooding into local
[3:42] homes. Well, tonight, Fox 12 has talked
[3:44] to Portland city officials who say
[3:46] they're still trying to figure out who
[3:47] should put the bill. The Portland Water
[3:49] Bureau admits the city sewer line became
[3:52] clogged, forcing the sewage into the
[3:54] homes in North Portland. But while the
[3:56] city admits its role in the matter, the
[3:58] water bureau hasn't said who will have
[3:59] to pay the thousands of dollars in
[4:01] cleanup fees.
[4:02] >> If there's a foreign object that
[4:03] shouldn't be in a sewer that's in the
[4:05] line, then that's a little bit different
[4:06] and it it's sort of a gray area. And
[4:08] that's why we do the investigations to
[4:10] try to find out whose responsibility it
[4:12] is.
[4:12] >> Now, because the blockage was not a root
[4:14] or a crushed pipe, the city has to
[4:17] investigate before making a decision on
[4:18] whether it'll pay for any of the damage
[4:20] to the homes. And that could take
[4:22] months. Crews spent the day cleaning up
[4:24] this mess of tires someone dumped along
[4:26] Northeast Marine Drive. Someone left the
[4:28] more than 200 tires in an illegal dump
[4:30] back on April 29th. Investigators say
[4:33] because of the large number of tires,
[4:35] they think a business might be to blame.
[4:37] So if you have any information, you're
[4:38] asked to call Multma County.
[4:40] >> We have some new information tonight
[4:41] about two men accused of shooting a
[4:43] Vancouver police officer in the chest.
[4:45] Dalenberg and Jeffrey Reid both appeared
[4:47] in Multma County court today. They've
[4:49] been behind bars for unrelated charges
[4:51] in Oregon, but just this week, police
[4:53] named them as the suspects in that
[4:55] Vancouver shooting. Back in April,
[4:57] somebody shot Sergeant J. Alli Berg and
[5:00] Reed haven't said if they will fight
[5:02] extradition to Washington to face the
[5:03] charges in that shooting. Nearly 500
[5:06] officers, family, and friends joined
[5:08] together in Salem at the Oregon Public
[5:10] Safety Academy to honor the brave men
[5:12] and women who lost their lives in the
[5:14] line of duty. They gathered this
[5:16] afternoon, five months after the
[5:18] Woodburn bank bombing that took the life
[5:21] of Captain Tom Tenant of Woodburn Police
[5:23] and senior trooper Bill Hakee of the
[5:26] Oregon State Police. Woodburn Police
[5:28] Chief Scott Russell was seriously hurt
[5:30] in that bombing and today was his first
[5:33] public appearance since the bombing.
[5:36] What should have attracted the attention
[5:39] were Tom's accomplishments as a man, as
[5:42] a husband, as a father, a community
[5:45] member, and as a police officer. We're
[5:47] really lucky, the tenants and myself and
[5:50] Scott Russell's family to have such a
[5:52] great outpouring of support from our um
[5:56] their fellow workers and community here
[5:59] in the state and that this was given to
[6:02] us an opportunity to honor our husband's
[6:05] father's son
[6:07] is pretty spectacular.
[6:09] >> In all four names will join the names of
[6:11] other fallen officers honored on that
[6:14] memorial wall in Salem. A local man says
[6:17] his commute to work has more than
[6:18] doubled since someone took off with his
[6:20] car. The man says he parked his car at
[6:22] the Lloyd Center parking lot on Monday.
[6:24] But when he came out of the mall, it was
[6:26] gone and now he has to bike to work.
[6:28] KPTV Sophie is driving with us in
[6:30] Portland with his story and some tips to
[6:31] keep the same thing from happening to
[6:33] you, Sophie. The victim says he parked
[6:35] his car on the second floor of this
[6:37] covered garage just outside Nordstrom.
[6:39] He says when he realized someone had
[6:41] taken his car, he filed a police report
[6:43] and then had to take the bus home that
[6:45] night.
[6:47] >> How am I going to get to work? How my
[6:48] kids going to get to the grocery store,
[6:51] to the doctors?
[6:52] >> Tonight, Steven Alorn has many
[6:54] questions, but very few answers. He says
[6:56] on Monday afternoon, he came to the
[6:58] Lloyd Center Mall with his family to
[7:00] have lunch. As always, he parked his
[7:02] 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, like
[7:05] this one, in the covered garage. But
[7:07] when they came out of the mall this
[7:09] time, Steven says his car was gone.
[7:11] >> My first thought was maybe maybe I
[7:14] parked it in the wrong spot. I was
[7:16] hoping and I called security and no
[7:19] truck.
[7:21] >> Steven says mall security circled the
[7:23] parking lot with him looking for his
[7:24] car. When they couldn't find it, they
[7:26] reviewed surveillance video. Steven says
[7:29] security cameras caught the suspect
[7:31] scoping out several cars.
[7:32] >> The next video of him is driving away in
[7:34] my Jeep at 402. My heart dropped.
[7:37] Portland police are advising drivers to
[7:39] park in bright, well-lit places. Don't
[7:41] leave valuables in the car that would
[7:43] entice thieves and get an alarm if you
[7:45] can.
[7:46] >> We're walking everywhere. We It's awful.
[7:50] >> Steven's fianceƩ says it pains her to
[7:52] see him having to ride his bike an hour
[7:54] and a half to work every day. His
[7:57] commute by car was just 25 minutes. We
[8:00] can't afford to take a taxi. We can't
[8:01] afford all that stuff. I mean, we're not
[8:04] the richest people. We're just barely
[8:06] scraping by. Tonight, Steven has this
[8:09] message for the thief.
[8:10] >> Now, I'm riding my bike to work and I
[8:12] leave 2 hours earlier and it's it's a
[8:15] big part of my life that you took from
[8:17] me.
[8:18] >> Steven says a suspect is a white man
[8:20] about 6 feet tall with a slim build.
[8:22] He's about 20 to 25 years old with long
[8:25] brown hair. He was wearing a black
[8:27] hoodie at the time of the theft and the
[8:29] license plate on his car is 501 DGN.
[8:33] Anyone with information on this case is
[8:35] asked to contact Portland police.
[8:37] Reporting live in Northeast Portland
[8:38] tonight, Sophie Stone, the 10 o'clock
[8:40] news.
[8:41] >> A man wanted on meth charges is in jail
[8:43] tonight after a chase with deputies.
[8:44] Cops say that they spotted Adam Purcell
[8:46] on a four-wheeler today. They say he saw
[8:48] them and tried to drive away. Deputies
[8:51] say he finally made it onto an access
[8:53] road in Primeville and then crashed into
[8:55] a dump truck. Medics took him to a
[8:57] nearby hospital and he now faces several
[9:00] charges.
[9:03] We have some new details tonight about
[9:05] the local woman trampled by a horse.
[9:07] Tonight, her father is talking to Fox 12
[9:09] about the accident. A horse kicked and
[9:11] trampled Amy Ericson near Sherwood
[9:13] yesterday. She called 911, but bad cell
[9:16] service kept dispatchers from hearing
[9:18] her clearly and they didn't know where
[9:19] she was. So, they went to work piecing
[9:22] together her location, eventually
[9:23] targeting a place near Sherwood. And a
[9:25] Clackamus County Sheriff's deputy found
[9:27] her lying on the ground bleeding. But
[9:29] her father tonight tells us her injuries
[9:30] are not as bad as they first seemed.
[9:33] >> She's been injured by horses before
[9:35] where she's had some ribs broken and uh
[9:38] luckily uh this time uh no serious
[9:41] injuries that uh and she get she should
[9:43] get well fast.
[9:45] >> Amy's father says his daughter wants to
[9:47] especially thank the dispatchers and
[9:48] authorities who just didn't give up on
[9:50] her. He also thanks the staff at Legacy
[9:52] Emanuel Hospital.
[9:54] >> Now Portland's first weather at 10. Hey,
[9:57] Mark Nelson here in the first live local
[9:59] weather center for the first time in a
[10:00] week. Not much to look at on the live
[10:02] radar. We don't have any showers showing
[10:03] up. So, let's go out to the beach here.
[10:04] This is our Shinook Winds beach cam and
[10:06] a beautiful evening out there. This is I
[10:08] think from about 5 to 7:00 or so, about
[10:11] an hour before sunset. And you can see
[10:13] calming wind, just a few puffy clouds
[10:15] and that was about it. Looks like uh
[10:16] you'll probably have a pretty nice
[10:17] sunrise out there at the beaches as
[10:19] well. Now, if you've been outside, you
[10:20] know it's getting chilly. A good portion
[10:22] of the metro area dropping into the 40s
[10:24] at this hour. Most of us uh stay in the
[10:26] 40s. Some spots though like Hillsboro,
[10:28] Scapuse could drop into the 30s. Coming
[10:30] up, we've got the weekend forecast
[10:31] looking brighter and we just had a
[10:33] tornado in Oregon yesterday. We'll talk
[10:34] about that.
[10:37] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.
[10:39] >> A local woman doesn't like her hairstyle
[10:41] and now she's taking her salon to court.
[10:43] >> Her hair was obviously very dry and very
[10:46] brittle.
[10:46] >> Here why some workers say she brought
[10:48] this on herself. Well, Noma County may
[10:51] cut hundreds of jobs. So Fox12 wants to
[10:53] know why it's hiring someone to blog,
[10:56] use Facebook, and Twitter for as much as
[10:58] 70 grand a year. It's a place true
[11:01] Portlanders come to gather. But health
[11:03] inspectors found something unsanitary
[11:06] growing in the kitchen. See where in
[11:08] tonight's Dirty Dining, the economic
[11:10] crisis hits businesses hard on Northwest
[11:13] 23rd Avenue.
[11:14] >> I noticed there's a lot more uh you
[11:16] know, vacant real estate,
[11:18] >> but they're not giving in. how they're
[11:20] keeping doors open and customers coming
[11:22] back.
[11:23] >> And we do have a chilly night ahead.
[11:24] Some of you getting close to that frost
[11:26] point. We'll talk about that and a big
[11:27] warm-up for the weekend coming up.
[11:30] >> You're watching the 10:00 news first
[11:33] live local. [music]
[11:40] >> Dollhouse season finale.
[11:41] >> He came for Echo.

[12:54] coming up on the 10:00 news. First live
[12:56] local.
[13:02] >> [music]
[13:02] >> How do we restart Oregon's economy? All
[13:05] across the state, lottery funds are
[13:07] creating new jobs and protecting
[13:10] existing ones. In Gresham, for example,
[13:13] they help bring a semiconductor plant
[13:15] back to life, keeping 400 people on the
[13:17] job, and 400 families [music] contribute
[13:20] to the local economy. Working to keep
[13:23] Oregon working. The Oregon Lottery. It
[13:26] does good things. Lottery games are
[13:28] based on chance and should be played for
[13:29] entertainment only. When I travel, I
[13:31] don't have to worry about bringing
[13:32] contacts or having something tear, bring
[13:34] an extra set. Um, it's just visual
[13:37] freedom.
[13:38] >> Save $1,000 off 2020 Institute's LASIC
[13:41] commitment for life until June 30th

[13:45] >> Summers are great, but kids can lose
[13:46] what they learned in school. Don't let
[13:48] them fall behind. Call Silven.

[14:15] Let your TV reward you with the website
[14:17] that gives back powered by Fox2 Oregon.
[14:22] Welcome back. Have a traffic alert
[14:24] tonight. A crash is closed I 84
[14:26] westbound in the Troutdale area. These
[14:29] are live pictures you're looking at
[14:30] right now. It's all happening at exit
[14:32] 17. That's near Marine Drive. ODOT says
[14:35] both lanes into town are closed.
[14:37] However, traffic officers are
[14:39] redirecting cars off the freeway before
[14:42] that crash and then back on just about a
[14:44] third of a mile away. So, it's not
[14:45] creating right now a huge backup, but
[14:47] something to be aware of. Crews are
[14:48] working to clear the roadway, but they
[14:49] don't think that they will have it open
[14:51] until about 1:00 a.m. We'll keep you
[14:53] posted if anything changes.
[14:55] >> Well, you don't see cases like this in
[14:56] court very often. A local woman sued her
[14:58] hair salon for thousands of dollars
[15:00] because she said they ruined her hair.
[15:02] It took jurors just a few hours to reach
[15:04] their decision today. KPTV's Brett
[15:06] Weissberg spent the day in court and has
[15:08] the verdict.
[15:10] >> After the three-day trial, the jury's
[15:11] decision means Sarah Ward will not
[15:14] collect the $50,000 she had hoped for.
[15:16] We are overwhelmed at the support um
[15:19] that the community of Lake OSGO has
[15:21] given us.
[15:22] >> Tonight, the owner of Roomie Simone
[15:23] Salon is ready to move on.
[15:25] >> We're just excited to get back to work.
[15:27] >> Diana Rosselu has been in a 19-month
[15:29] battle against a former client, Sarah
[15:32] Ward. For the past three days, Ward and
[15:34] her attorney tried to convince a jury to
[15:36] award her $50,000
[15:39] >> based upon the evidence that Ms. Ward's
[15:41] hair broke as a result of a chemical
[15:44] insult. To collect the damages, Ward
[15:46] needed just nine jurors to rule in her
[15:48] favor. But that didn't happen today.
[15:50] >> Was rum simone andor caps off negligent
[15:54] in one or more of the ways alleged in
[15:55] the plaintiff's complaint? And your
[15:57] answer to that question, the verdict
[15:59] says no.
[16:00] >> Let Gorman says in 2007 her client had
[16:03] her hair bleached three times by Katia
[16:06] Caps off. But soon after those
[16:07] treatments, Ward's hair started falling
[16:09] out, chopped and damaged. Ward told the
[16:11] jurors she was devastated. They want
[16:14] somebody like that to change her look
[16:19] because they screwed up.
[16:21] >> Defense says they tried working with
[16:23] Ward to fix the problem.
[16:24] >> Well, you don't prepare for it. You
[16:26] know, learning experience. Everything's
[16:28] a learning experience and something good
[16:29] comes out of everything.
[16:30] >> As jurors left, they explained why they
[16:32] ruled in favor of the salon.
[16:34] >> There just wasn't enough uh good, solid,
[16:37] hard facts that could not be disputed or
[16:40] argued. Everyone in this case says
[16:42] they're ready to put this behind them.
[16:44] >> It was a bad deal for her for sure. I'm
[16:46] sorry it happened to her and uh but we
[16:50] all need to take responsibility.
[16:51] >> As Sarah left court today, she told us
[16:54] this was never a case about money.
[16:56] Reporting in News Control tonight, Brent
[16:58] Weisberg, the 10:00 news.
[16:59] >> Well, some local students may not get to
[17:01] take part in the Junior Rose Festival
[17:03] Parade. The boosters who help organize
[17:05] the parade say Portland public school
[17:06] district officials [music] will not
[17:08] allow kids to get out of school early
[17:09] for the parade for the first time ever.
[17:12] The June 3rd parade starts at 1:00.
[17:14] School district officials say that they
[17:16] will allow kids to go home early if they
[17:18] have a [music] note from a parent.
[17:19] Parade organizers say if the school
[17:21] district wanted to change the tradition,
[17:23] it should have held a meeting.
[17:25] So what that ultimately means is that
[17:27] the nation's largest and oldest
[17:29] children's parade suddenly gets shrunk
[17:31] by a single action of the Portland
[17:34] public schools. That decision does
[17:36] affect six schools. Portland public
[17:38] school officials say they've received
[17:39] some complaints from some parents who
[17:41] don't want school to end early on parade
[17:44] day.
[17:47] Did a woman out of PDX have the H1N1
[17:50] flu? Tonight, the Multma Health
[17:52] Department is trying to figure that out.
[17:53] Officials at Portland International
[17:54] Airport say an afternoon flight came in
[17:56] carrying a woman who had some flu
[17:57] symptoms. She agreed to go to the
[17:59] hospital for tests. And tonight, the
[18:01] health department is working with DHS on
[18:03] that case. As of today, Oregon public
[18:06] health officials have received
[18:07] confirmation of 48 cases of H1N1 flu.
[18:11] >> Tonight, a decision has been made about
[18:13] whether or not a controversial math
[18:15] curriculum will be taught in the Tiger
[18:16] Tolitin School District. It's called
[18:18] college preparatory math and parents say
[18:20] it just doesn't cover the basics and has
[18:23] even failed in California schools. But
[18:25] the district had been saying it's a
[18:27] balanced curriculum that emphasizes
[18:28] problem solving. Well, tonight the
[18:30] school board voted 3 to2 to bring back
[18:33] traditional math next fall. But they do
[18:35] say there will be a small amount of the
[18:37] college prep math added to the mix.
[18:41] Well, it is known as one of the
[18:42] trendiest places in all of Portland, but
[18:44] it seems even Northwest 23rd isn't
[18:47] immune from the economic crisis. Take a
[18:49] stroll in that area of Portland, known
[18:50] for its unique and quaint shops and
[18:52] restaurants, and you'll see some things
[18:54] are changing. KPTV's Andrew Padulla is
[18:56] live in Northwest Portland with more on
[18:58] the story. Andrew?
[18:59] >> Well, Wayne, if you walk up and down
[19:00] along Northwest 23rd, you've probably
[19:02] seen them signs at many storefronts like
[19:04] this, but some say hope is out there.
[19:08] >> [music]
[19:12] >> Along Northwest 23rd, people are walking
[19:15] to a different beat.
[19:17] >> I am noticing it all over. It's very sad
[19:20] to see because I really feel for these
[19:22] store owners.
[19:25] >> Up and down the street, the signs stick
[19:27] out, places for lease, stores sitting
[19:30] empty.
[19:30] >> Um, it looks like uh a lot of the
[19:33] smaller boutiquey kind of shops are
[19:35] closing. I'm interested to see who the
[19:37] new people are.
[19:38] >> The economy caught up with many store
[19:40] owners.
[19:40] >> In January, February, and March, I
[19:42] reduced my hours for the first time in
[19:45] 23 years.
[19:47] >> Some of those unique boutiques didn't
[19:49] survive. Shoppers stopped spending.
[19:51] >> I've cut way back and I think a lot more
[19:54] before I spend any money.
[19:56] >> Some stores getting ready to close are
[19:58] offering huge sales.
[20:00] >> I just see a lot more sales that don't
[20:02] seem to be working. At Dazzle, owner
[20:05] Fabiana Priola says her store reflects
[20:07] the change. She feels it's on its way.
[20:10] >> You know, I'm seeing more people that
[20:11] live in the neighborhood and and people
[20:13] who come in from different parts of the
[20:15] city, too. I'm just seeing an increase
[20:17] in number of people in the door.
[20:20] >> Just as some of the higherend boutiques
[20:22] are gone, blocks away on Burnside, a
[20:25] different type of store has sprung up. A
[20:27] bargain for your buck.
[20:30] Back on Northwest 23rd. It's a little
[20:32] bit bizarre [music] because there are
[20:34] places that I've walked by, you know,
[20:36] for the years that I've lived here and
[20:38] um they're empty now.
[20:39] >> Everyone on this street is hoping for a
[20:41] new tune to this bad economy.
[20:45] [music]
[20:50] >> And back here live, according to the
[20:52] Portland Business Journal, in the last
[20:53] four months, 22 stores have either
[20:56] closed or in the process of closing in
[20:57] the northwest area of Portland. Nine of
[20:59] the stores are along Northwest 23rd.
[21:02] Reporting live from Northwest Portland,
[21:04] Andrew Padulla, the 10 o'clock news.
[21:06] >> Coming up tonight, a surprise in
[21:08] tonight's Dirty Dining, but it is not a
[21:09] welcome one.
[21:10] >> Yeah, a customer says they found the
[21:12] head of a snake in one chain restaurant.
[21:14] You have to see this one to believe it.
[21:16] >> A car company begs Congress for billions
[21:18] of dollars in bailout money, then turns
[21:20] around and throws a swanky party.
[21:22] Tonight, why executives are defending
[21:24] their actions. And he's supposed to
[21:26] remain celibate, but this priest is in
[21:28] some hot water for these pictures
[21:30] showing him and a woman at the beach.
[21:32] >> And it looks like a cold night coming
[21:34] up. In fact, some places he's going to
[21:35] cascades into the 20s overnight tonight.
[21:37] We'll have a much warmer forecast though
[21:39] coming up for the weekend.

[22:56] missing wife. The wait is over if you
[22:58] want to get paid to post on Facebook and
[23:00] local taxpayers will foot the bill. And
[23:03] where do you see what health inspectors

[24:48] >> Tonight, Senator Ron Weiden wants the
[24:50] federal government to give people in
[24:51] Veronia four more months to use those
[24:53] temporary trailers. The government
[24:56] provided them after a major storm and
[24:58] flood back in December of 2007, but they
[25:00] were only for 18 months. and that will
[25:02] expire on June 8th. Widen says people
[25:05] just weren't able to move into those
[25:06] trailers until 4 months after they got
[25:09] there, which is why he wants to push for
[25:11] the extension.
[25:14] In news around the Northwest tonight,

[25:28] Senator Maria Canwell says the high

[25:32] 100 miles into the Pacific. Canwell says
[25:35] she plans to push for that legislation.
[25:37] >> Seattle's former police chief is
[25:39] officially the nation's next drugs. The

[25:59] >> [music]
[26:00] >> Well, today we had just a few light
[26:01] showers out there and just a lot of

[26:05] breaking through and that is a sign of
[26:07] an improving forecast to come. Uh,
[26:09] that's coming up after the break. Stick
[26:11] around.
[26:12] >> Also ahead, the Crystal Ballroom is
[26:14] popular for concerts and burgers, but
[26:16] the health department found something in

[30:43] That's tonight, right after the 10:00
[30:44] news.
[30:47] In tonight's Consumer Watch, great news
[30:49] for working moms in Washington State.
[30:51] smartmoney.com ranked the state of
[30:53] Washington number 10 on the list of 10
[30:56] best places for working moms. The
[30:58] criteria, good jobs, affordable and
[31:00] highquality child care, workplace
[31:02] flexibility, and family leave. The state
[31:04] scored well for well- reggulated child
[31:07] care and workplace flexibility. However,
[31:09] at more than $10,000 a year, child care
[31:12] in Washington is still on the expensive
[31:14] side. Fox 12 for your iPhone is climbing
[31:17] the charts. We're really proud of this.
[31:18] Yesterday, we told you that the Fox 12
[31:20] to Go app ranked at number 18 for the
[31:22] most popular downloads. Well, get this.
[31:24] Tonight, we're at number 11 in the
[31:26] iPhone app store. Number one is Yahoo.
[31:28] Number two is the Wall Street Journal.
[31:30] But Fox 12 is one of the highest ranking
[31:32] local news stations in the country on
[31:34] that list. So, thank you. Thanks to you
[31:36] for making that happen. And download it
[31:38] if you haven't already.
[31:42] It may sound impossible, but a local
[31:44] team at Xerox has developed a new kind
[31:46] of printing technology that not only
[31:47] helps us live green, it could also give
[31:49] our economy a big boost. Imagine, if you
[31:52] will, a color printer in your office
[31:54] that doesn't need any cartridges and
[31:55] doesn't leave smudges on your copies or
[31:57] ink on your hands. The brand new Xerox
[32:00] color cubes. Environmentally friendly,
[32:02] it uses solid blocks of ink for color
[32:05] printing that are completely waste-free.
[32:07] The best part is that they're made in
[32:09] Wilsonville.
[32:11] The color cube machine generates
[32:12] approximately 90% less waste than uh
[32:15] what a typical color laser would.
[32:17] >> Again, very simple for the customer.
[32:19] Open up the ink loader and uh drop the
[32:22] ink sticks in and that's it.
[32:25] >> You think you could use those ink sticks
[32:27] outside on the driveway? You know how
[32:28] the kids use the chalk?
[32:30] >> Yeah, they would try.
[32:31] >> Well, once you load four color sticks
[32:33] into the machine, engineers say that
[32:34] you're set for 200,000 copies. and they
[32:37] claim that the quality is just as good
[32:39] on recycled paper.
[32:41] >> Well, a field once covered in trash and
[32:43] hypodermic needles is now filled with
[32:44] kids playing baseball. Little leaguers
[32:46] and parents gathered at Fernwood Field
[32:49] in Northeast Portland tonight for a
[32:50] dedication ceremony. The project took
[32:52] more than 2 years to complete. It was
[32:54] fenced off with barbed wire while while
[32:57] safety issues were sorted out a year
[32:58] ago. Parents say it used to be an
[33:00] eyesore covered with dangerous objects.
[33:02] Look at it now. It is something to be
[33:04] proud of.
[33:06] On the weekends, kids are playing
[33:07] kickball or they're playing soccer with
[33:09] their friends. You know, now kids can
[33:11] come here on their own and play
[33:12] basketball where you might have needed a
[33:15] parent to to escort you just to make
[33:17] sure that everything was safe. And it's
[33:19] it's just it's a great place to gather.
[33:21] >> What a great difference that'll make for
[33:23] that community. The renovation cost
[33:24] $125,000. It was funded primarily by
[33:27] grants and the work of local people and
[33:29] organizations there.
[33:31] >> Fox 12 chief meteorologist Mark Nelson
[33:33] joins [music] us now. I understand you
[33:34] were north of the river today visiting
[33:35] our friends up in Vancouver.
[33:37] >> I'm almost finished with my school
[33:38] visits for the year, but today was kind
[33:39] of special because a lot of you may
[33:41] remember and I think you two remember
[33:42] the drinkwords. We followed them around
[33:44] last summer talking about expensive gas
[33:46] on their road trip. Yeah, they run a
[33:47] road trip for about three weeks, right?
[33:49] Remember
[33:51] >> because of all the gas prices where they
[33:52] went
[33:52] >> and gas prices were very high. Hopefully
[33:54] this summer it'll be cheaper. But uh
[33:56] they went to that school. I had my usual
[33:57] school thing here. And what you'll see
[33:59] is uh they gave us all this these great
[34:01] pictures here. There's a picture of the
[34:02] classroom. There were actually four
[34:04] classes in there, 100 kids. But I see
[34:06] Molly Drinkward here did all the art.
[34:09] >> Kind of this great little portfolio here
[34:11] ready to go as I walked out the door.
[34:12] >> Nice.
[34:13] >> Great place. And they also gave us some
[34:14] chips and salsa. That was pretty nice as
[34:16] well.
[34:16] >> Yeah, she makes great salsa.
[34:18] >> Yeah, salsa was good stuff. Thank you
[34:19] very much. But just a few more class
[34:21] visits to go. The school year is
[34:22] wrapping up, which means summer is right
[34:24] around the corner, right? Yeah, should
[34:26] be. Okay, let's take a look outside
[34:27] right now if we could. Look at that.
[34:28] We've got a almost full moon out there.
[34:30] That's a view from our skyline camera.
[34:31] It's going to be a bright night because
[34:33] we have skies clearing out. And with
[34:34] skies clearing out, of course, starting
[34:36] to get kind of chilly out there. Now, we
[34:37] made it to 62 today. It's a little below
[34:39] average for this time of the year. We
[34:41] are 58 at Salem. And east side, some
[34:43] spots, boy, had a tough time getting
[34:45] much above 50. Burns and Baker City, 53
[34:48] degrees at both places. Current
[34:49] temperatures, it's in the 30s there.
[34:51] Most of us west side already down in the
[34:53] 40s. It's kind of chilly for this time
[34:54] of the night and this time of the year.
[34:56] But let's step back one day. Yesterday,
[34:58] if you're watching in our 4:00 show,
[34:59] just a little bit out of our viewing
[35:01] area, but over in Umatillaa County, uh
[35:03] we mentioned that there have been some
[35:04] severe thunderstorms that moved through
[35:06] that area, but one of those did produce
[35:08] an EF1 tornado. I think that's the same
[35:10] strength as what we had in Vancouver uh
[35:12] about 14 months ago. And here are the
[35:14] details on that. It actually did quite a
[35:15] bit of destruction over there over a
[35:17] mainly open area. It was a mile and a
[35:19] half long path. Tore a a metal roof
[35:22] section through to half a mile.
[35:24] 50-gallon drums, those big things,
[35:26] quarter mile distance. They were thrown
[35:28] that far by the tornado and also golf
[35:30] ball size hail. So, we don't see many of
[35:31] that strength of tornado, many of those
[35:34] here in the Pacific Northwest. Now,
[35:36] we've had one in Washington and one in
[35:37] Oregon here within about a year and a
[35:39] half. Well, weather, boy, it's going to
[35:41] be dead the next few days, which means
[35:42] good stuff for you. It looks like some
[35:44] beautiful weather coming up the next
[35:45] three days. No weather systems to the
[35:46] west. The cool air over us, that's going
[35:48] to push off to the east. Warmer air
[35:50] comes in from the west and this will
[35:52] kind of push a jetream up to the north
[35:53] for a few days. Unfortunately, it's
[35:55] going to come right back at us, I think,
[35:56] on Sunday night and Monday. So, enjoy
[35:58] three days of dry weather and then the
[36:00] showers come back for the beginning of
[36:02] next week. Our cloud rain forecast shows
[36:03] maybe some morning clouds tomorrow,
[36:05] especially inland, maybe some morning
[36:07] clouds along the beaches on the Saturday
[36:09] and Sunday mornings, and then some high
[36:11] clouds coming up Sunday afternoon. But
[36:12] otherwise, it's going to be real nice.
[36:14] So, weekend getaway looking good. Let's
[36:15] do that first and then we'll get to
[36:17] tomorrow's forecast. A good outdoor
[36:18] weekend in the valley. Near 70 on
[36:20] Saturday, lower 70s on Sunday. A few
[36:22] high clouds for Mother's Day. Uh in the
[36:24] gorge, not a good wind surfing weekend.
[36:26] I think there'll be light wind both
[36:27] days. Temperatures up in the mid70s,
[36:29] especially at the east end of the gorge
[36:30] on Sunday. And then for eastern Oregon,
[36:32] looks like a dry and warm weekend coming
[36:34] up. Kind of slow to warm up tomorrow and
[36:36] Saturday and then into the 70s, I think,
[36:38] in Eastern Oregon on Sunday. So, pretty
[36:39] much a cloudless weekend anywhere east
[36:42] of the Cascade Crest. So, let's go to
[36:44] tomorrow's forecast and we will go to
[36:45] Eastern Oregon to start with. I can tell
[36:47] you this, it looks like a nice day
[36:48] tomorrow. A little bit warmer, 50s, some
[36:51] 60s, 64 Pendleton, maybe just touching
[36:53] 70 at the Dallas up on Mount Hood.
[36:56] Little bit warmer, by the way. Great
[36:57] climbing weather on the mountain this
[36:59] weekend with no weather systems
[37:00] approaching. We're in the peak of the
[37:01] climbing season. Good firm snow since
[37:03] it's been cold. So, uh, good news up
[37:05] there. And then west of the Cascades for
[37:06] tomorrow, mid to upper 60s here in the
[37:08] valleys. Some brief morning clouds,
[37:10] including here in the metro area. Notice
[37:11] the temperature. Uh it's going to be
[37:13] chilly in the morning. It'll take a
[37:14] while to get up into the upper 60s by
[37:17] 5:00 p.m. So, kind of mid-spring to late
[37:19] spring temperatures as we go through the
[37:21] day. Mother's Day looks real nice. Uh
[37:23] nothing has really changed on here
[37:24] except we bumped up the high
[37:25] temperatures for Mother's Day, maybe
[37:26] around 72, but the showers do come back
[37:29] for the beginning of next week. And
[37:30] don't forget, you can always go online
[37:31] ktv.com and check out our instant
[37:33] desktop weather that comes down on your
[37:35] PC.
[37:38] In tonight's final cut, smart move or
[37:41] mistake, you decide [music] as we show
[37:43] you why GM is spending a pretty penny
[37:45] throwing a party on the same day it
[37:47] announced billions of [music] dollars in
[37:48] losses. Do you think it's smart to use
[37:51] your tax money in these economic times
[37:52] to hire a county blogger while having to
[37:55] let go of more than 200 other positions?
[37:58] And see if one local landmark made all
[38:00] the right moves in the kitchen to
[38:02] prepare for health inspectors. Tonight's
[38:04] Dirty Dining checks out the Crystal
[38:06] Ballroom. The final cut is next.

[39:19] >> So, the insurance company and the folks
[39:21] that did this to me have some sort of
[39:23] arrangement. They get more work and the

[39:27] [music]
[39:27] >> I see.
[39:32] >> But,
[39:32] >> who wins here? Not me

[41:27] Canyon Road, Beaverton.
[41:32] Stand by the final cut in 3 2 1. Kill
[41:35] [music] them.
[41:38] The final cut begins with fire season
[41:40] 2009 and another sleepless night for
[41:42] thousands of people in Southern
[41:44] California. More than 13,000 people are
[41:46] out of their homes tonight as a wildfire
[41:48] continues to spread near Santa Barbara
[41:50] tonight. You're looking at live
[41:51] pictures. You can still see those flames
[41:54] flaring up across the area. The blaze
[41:56] reached the same burn area that
[41:57] destroyed 200 homes 6 months ago. Nearly
[42:00] 1,400 firefighters are battling those
[42:02] blazes. At least 10 have been hurt. So
[42:05] far, no specific damage estimates are
[42:08] available.
[42:11] Now, news across America tonight starts
[42:13] in Georgia where a doctor gets an
[42:14] unusual birthday gift, a big box of pot.
[42:17] UPS delivered a package to the man's
[42:19] house on his birthday, and it was on his
[42:21] front porch when he left for work, but
[42:22] he didn't open it right away. He cut it
[42:24] open when he got home to find a big
[42:25] block of marijuana. He says he thought
[42:27] it was moss at first. That is until he
[42:30] got the smell of it.
[42:33] >> Chiseled into this block. It was very
[42:35] compact and it realized this was not
[42:36] spagnum moss. Uh cuz the the odor
[42:40] suddenly changed.
[42:41] >> Authorities say the name on the address
[42:44] label was probably made up. The street
[42:46] value of that packaged pot is about
[42:48] $40,000.
[42:50] >> Drew Peterson is behind bars tonight in
[42:52] Illinois. arrested in connection with
[42:53] the murder of his third wife. This is
[42:56] video of uh his children being taken out
[42:58] of his home in a Chicago sub suburb.
[43:00] Police say Kathleen Savio was found dead
[43:03] in a dry bathtub back in 2004. Peterson
[43:05] has also been a suspect in the
[43:07] disappearance of his 23-year-old wife,
[43:09] Stacy Peterson. This next story might
[43:11] make you upset. On the same day General
[43:13] Motors announced it had lost $6 billion
[43:15] in the first quarter, the company hosted
[43:17] a huge party in Arizona. GM flew in 500
[43:20] of its biggest customers, not employees,
[43:22] to a Phoenix resort. The company says it
[43:25] won't give the cost of the event, but
[43:26] says it is significantly less than it
[43:28] was last year. No one from the US
[43:30] government has responded. A Florida
[43:32] priest is in big trouble tonight after
[43:34] pictures show him lying on a beach with
[43:36] a woman. He's now on leave and the
[43:38] church is struggling with how to handle
[43:40] the scandal. Just last week, the priest
[43:42] announced on a radio show that he thinks
[43:44] priests should be allowed to get
[43:46] married.
[43:49] A gas leak causes a huge explosion at a
[43:51] shopping mall in Maryland and it is
[43:52] caught on camera. Take a look at this.
[43:54] Investigators had evacuated the mall
[43:55] just a few minutes before that explosion
[43:57] right there after shoppers started
[44:00] smelling fumes. The blast still injured
[44:02] six people, including a man working on
[44:04] one of the gas lines. The explosion
[44:06] caused thousands of dollars worth of
[44:08] damage to several stores. A full
[44:10] investigation is underway tonight.
[44:14] The File Cut goes local tonight with
[44:16] controversy in Multma County. The county
[44:18] could be forced to cut more than 200
[44:20] positions, but has an opening for a job
[44:22] that requires somebody to use Twitter
[44:24] and Facebook. KPTV's Andrew Doula is
[44:27] live at the Fox 12 mobile newsroom now
[44:28] with this controversy. Andrew, well,
[44:30] Wayne, can you believe this? It's a
[44:32] full-time job that pays 60 to $70,000 a
[44:35] year. And one of the requirements is to
[44:37] update the county's Facebook and Twitter
[44:39] page. Now, Multma County says it created
[44:41] this position because people don't know
[44:42] what their county does for them. Aside
[44:45] from being on Facebook and Twitter, the
[44:46] position requires applicants to be able
[44:48] to write news releases, editorials, and
[44:50] web content on tight deadlines, but some
[44:53] don't think it's worth taxpayer money.
[44:56] >> It looks like um probably a
[44:58] misappropriation of payroll dollar and
[45:01] that they could probably find somebody
[45:02] that would do it very cheaply. I don't
[45:05] think that it's appropriate to pay
[45:06] somebody to play around on the internet
[45:09] all day if they have a county website. I
[45:11] don't see why that's not enough.
[45:12] >> Yeah, I think it's a little tough in
[45:14] today's environment to spend that money
[45:15] there. So, yeah, I don't think it's a
[45:17] good idea.
[45:19] >> And the office chair for public affairs
[45:21] is taking a pay cut. They're also
[45:22] eliminating a couple of positions and
[45:24] rearranging some money to pay for this
[45:26] coordinator position. That posting, that
[45:28] job posting closes May 20th. Reporting
[45:31] live from the Fox 12 mobile newsroom
[45:32] tonight, Andrew Padulla, the 10 o'clock
[45:34] news.
[45:35] >> So, you might have a different opinion
[45:36] and Fox 12 does want to know what you
[45:37] think about this. So, we invite you to
[45:39] take our web poll. Should Multma County
[45:41] hire a full-time social media
[45:43] coordinator? You can vote now online at
[45:45] kptv.com.
[45:51] >> Well, talk about some extreme dirty
[45:53] dining. If you're eating, you might want
[45:54] to pause for this story. A man from the
[45:57] Albany, New York area says he found
[45:59] something peculiar in his food while
[46:00] dining at a TGI Fridays there on Sunday
[46:02] night. Jack Pendleton says he found the
[46:05] snake head in his broccoli and he used a
[46:07] cell phone to take the picture. He
[46:09] describes what happened when he first
[46:11] saw it.
[46:12] >> And when I finally got it turned over
[46:14] all the way, that was when I saw the eye
[46:16] sockets that were all black and sunken
[46:18] in. And there was a a bit of skin that
[46:20] was missing from the top of the
[46:22] forehead. You could see the skull
[46:23] through there.
[46:25] Oh, that is so disgusting. This guy says
[46:27] he is not looking for a payday, though.
[46:29] He says he will not be going back to
[46:30] that Fridays, but he also says he has no
[46:33] plans to sue.
[46:34] >> Well, back here at home, Portland
[46:36] landmarks get health inspections, too.
[46:38] And the results are not always
[46:39] memorable. But tonight, Dirty Dining
[46:40] shows you a historic place with a health
[46:42] score some would rather forget. KPTV's
[46:44] Carrie Tomlinson joins us live now with
[46:46] more on that. Carrie?
[46:47] >> Well, the owners of this place say it is
[46:49] on the National Historic Register. It's
[46:52] a restaurant and several bars all under
[46:54] one roof at the Crystal Ballroom.
[46:59] Bite into a burger here and you bite
[47:01] into Portland history. Nine decades of
[47:04] dance and drink, song, and now supper.
[47:07] The Crystal Ballroom began as a dance
[47:09] hall around World War I and now carries
[47:12] on as a McMinman's music hall with bars
[47:15] and a restaurant. But all this history
[47:17] can't change the score of the Crystal
[47:19] Ballroom's last semianual health
[47:22] inspection. A 62 out of 100, a failing
[47:26] grade. Inspectors wrote up sticky and
[47:29] moldy soda guns and holsters in four
[47:32] bars at the Crystal Ballroom with pink
[47:35] mold built up inside the holsters. They
[47:38] noted that the ice machine in the
[47:40] Crystal Ballroom bar was moldy inside
[47:43] and quite soiled outside. They saw that
[47:47] the tabletop can opener was quite soiled
[47:50] in some parts as well. Inspectors
[47:53] reported that two dishwashers were not
[47:55] sanitizing dishes properly to kill germs
[47:58] on your plates. They also tested burgers
[48:01] coming off the grill and found they were
[48:03] not hot enough, not cooked enough to
[48:06] kill germs that could make you sick.
[48:08] Many of these were repeat violations,
[48:11] problems turning up again on the
[48:13] inspection, even after a warning last
[48:16] time through. Inspectors did give
[48:18] compliments as well, saying they saw
[48:20] good cooling procedures, clean cooking
[48:23] and equipment surfaces, and clean and
[48:25] well supplied restrooms, among other
[48:27] things. But the list of violations was
[48:30] longer and gave the place its F-grade.
[48:33] >> We paid a visit to the Crystal Ballroom.
[48:35] >> We're with Fox 12 News and we do stories
[48:37] on restaurant inspections and we saw
[48:39] that [snorts] the the report for the
[48:42] Crystal Ballroom was a failing
[48:44] inspection. The assistant manager
[48:46] referred us to another person in charge.
[48:48] >> Come back during regular business hours
[48:50] would be better when our property
[48:51] managers around. The property manager
[48:53] later told us they were able to correct
[48:56] some of the violations on the spot and
[48:58] some violations later on. He says it's
[49:01] difficult to stay violation free because
[49:03] they have such a large place, but he
[49:05] adds the scoring system is very
[49:07] important and they're very concerned
[49:10] about health and safety. They've
[49:12] received a perfect score in the past, he
[49:14] says, and 100 is always their goal.
[49:17] Inspectors returned for the mandatory
[49:19] reinspection and bumped the score up to
[49:23] an 89. That means the doors stay open at
[49:26] the Crystal Ballroom. Another night of
[49:28] music, magic, and history in downtown
[49:31] Portland.
[49:34] And now for some highs and lows. Muchas

[53:44] The show with a net for unexpected
[53:46] twists has a few more up its sleeve. Hi
[53:49] mom. All new Prison Break Friday at 8 on
[53:52] Fox 12 Oregon.
[53:59] >> The change to digital television is
[54:00] coming this June and Fox 12 wants to
[54:02] help you get ready.
[54:03] >> Right now both KPTV and our sister
[54:05] station KPDX broadcast in both digital
[54:07] and analog but soon it will only be
[54:09] digital. Kevin Cory joins us now live to
[54:11] explain how the test is going to work.
[54:12] Kevin.
[54:12] >> Yeah, that's right. The mandatory
[54:13] switchover is scheduled for June 12th.
[54:16] Now, in just a moment, we're going to
[54:17] turn off our analog broadcast signal for
[54:19] about 15 seconds. That will help you
[54:21] test your TV. If you lose our signal,
[54:23] don't change the channel. You'll be able
[54:25] to see our signal once the test is over.
[54:27] And then we'll tell you what you need to
[54:28] do before the deadline. Okay. So, you
[54:30] ready? All right. We're going to switch
[54:32] our And there we go. Now, if you're
[54:34] seeing our broadcast right now, then you
[54:36] don't need to do anything. Anyone who
[54:38] does not own a digital TV and gets their
[54:40] programming over the air will need to
[54:42] take certain steps in order to view
[54:44] television once the switchover occurs.
[54:46] Again, if you're seeing our signal, the
[54:48] TV you're watching right now is okay.
[54:51] Okay, so now we're going to turn the
[54:52] analog signal back on.
[54:55] And there we go. So, you have just seen
[54:57] a test of what will happen on June 12th
[54:59] when analog broadcast is shut off and
[55:02] the switch to digital is complete. If
[55:04] you lost your signal, saw snow, or just
[55:06] saw a black screen, well, that means
[55:07] your television is not ready for the
[55:09] digital transition. So, you have several
[55:11] options to correct this problem before
[55:13] June 12th. You can purchase a converter
[55:15] box, buy a new digital television, or
[55:17] you can contact a satellite or cable
[55:19] provider and sign up for their service.
[55:21] Now, for more information and a complete
[55:23] breakdown of the switch to digital, just
[55:25] go to kptv.com and click on the
[55:27] countdown to digital TV. Reporting live
[55:30] tonight, Kevin Kawari, the 10:00 news.
[55:32] Thank you, Kevin. And thanks for joining
[55:33] us tonight. If you have more questions
[55:35] about the transition to digital
[55:37] television, don't go anywhere.
[55:38] >> Yeah, because coming right up, our Fox

[55:42] Digital Transition. For now, the news
[55:45] does continue online at kptv.com. We
[55:47] hope you have a great night and get

[55:50] coming up in just about a month.

[59:09] Understanding the digital transition.
[59:11] The way you watch television is about to
[59:14] change.
[59:14] >> I'm just kind of wait until the switch
[59:16] comes.
[59:17] >> But you don't have to wait. You can
[59:18] enjoy the benefits of digital TV right
[59:21] now. We'll show you how to tell if you
[59:23] need to take action.
[59:24] >> I heard you don't have to buy a whole
[59:26] new TV set.
[59:27] >> How to get a coupon from the government
[59:29] in case you need some new equipment. Fox
[59:31] 12 wants to help you understand the
[59:34] digital TV transition.
[59:37] >> Well, thank you for joining us. I'm
[59:38] Kevin Kawari and let's start at the
[59:40] beginning. What is digital television?
[59:42] Well, digital television or DTV is an
[59:45] advanced broadcasting technology that
[59:46] offers better picture and sound quality.
[59:49] Now, back in 1996, Congress authorized
[59:51] giving TV stations an additional channel
[59:54] so they could start broadcasting a
[59:55] digital signal while keeping their
[59:57] analog signals up and running. Well,
[59:59] those analog signals are going away on
[60:01] June 12th, which means if you're not set
[60:03] up to receive the digital signal, your
[60:06] TV could go dark. You might remember
[60:08] Congress initially set a deadline of
[60:10] February 17th for the end of analog
[60:12] broadcasting. But when surveys showed
[60:14] millions of Americans weren't ready to
[60:16] make the switch, lawmakers voted to
[60:18] delay that transition. Some TV stations
[60:21] stopped broadcasting analog in February.
[60:23] But Fox 12 and PDX TV listened to our
[60:26] viewers concerns and decided to hold off
[60:29] on making the switch until June 12th. As
[60:31] KPTV's Jim Hyde explains, it's part of
[60:34] our commitment to helping you understand
[60:36] the digital transition.
[60:40] A DTV signal would be nothing but snow
[60:42] on a set that's only receptive to analog
[60:44] broadcast.
[60:47] Operators at a phone bank like this one
[60:49] want to help those who have not
[60:51] installed the converter box become ready
[60:53] for DTV. Most Portland TV stations are
[60:56] joining a single phone bank and DTV help
[60:58] center. Train staff are manning the
[61:00] phones from 8 until 5. That center is
[61:02] located at OPB, but people in all
[61:04] cooperating stations are taking calls in
[61:06] their buildings, too.
[61:07] >> They didn't get their coupons, what kind
[61:09] of box to buy, um how to hook it up, the
[61:12] manual's not making sense. um it's
[61:14] hooked up correctly, but they're not
[61:17] getting any channels or they haven't
[61:19] scanned yet.
[61:19] >> It just plugs directly into the TV.
[61:22] >> Operators at the help center have been
[61:23] trained to walk you through the
[61:25] connecting process over the telephone.
[61:27] You can also come here to KPTV to see
[61:29] the DTV converter box setup.
[61:32] >> Many of them will come with a couple of
[61:34] different kinds of plugs. Right here,
[61:36] you've got an RCA type of plug and we
[61:38] had a
[61:40] different kind of coax cable plug. And
[61:42] so basically, you need to take whatever
[61:43] kind of plug you had in your TV and use
[61:45] that in your converter box.
[61:47] >> Delaying the change over to June 12th
[61:49] should help avoid consumer confusion.
[61:52] >> I'm just looking at it viewer by viewer
[61:54] to help um because they're going to need
[61:55] help before after June 12th.
[61:57] >> Jim Hyde, Fox 12, Oregon.
[61:59] >> Well, the Portland DTV Help Center
[62:01] hotline is 1 800241-8123.
[62:06] Now, we'll bring you that number again
[62:07] in case you don't have a pen and paper
[62:08] nearby. And you can also find out uh
[62:11] more information by going to our website
[62:13] that is kptv.com.
[62:15] So you might be wondering why why is the
[62:18] FCC making this nationwide switch with a
[62:20] conversion to an all digital signal
[62:23] frees up the airwaves which means
[62:24] there's more room for Wi-Fi services and
[62:27] new dedicated communication channels for
[62:29] emergency first responders. And you win
[62:32] too. Digital signals offer a crisper
[62:34] picture when you're watching TV. So mark
[62:37] your calendar. Fox 12 and PDXTV will
[62:40] shut off our analog signals on Friday,
[62:42] June 12th. That happens at 9:00 a.m. And
[62:45] that means we'll only be sending out our
[62:47] digital signal. So, if you're not
[62:48] equipped to see our digital signal, you
[62:50] need to take action. Now, you might be
[62:53] wondering how to tell whether you are
[62:54] ready for the end of analog broadcasts.
[62:56] Well, there are a few different ways to
[62:58] tell. First, if your TV was made after
[63:01] March 1st, 2007, it is equipped with a
[63:04] digital tuner. Those sets must be marked
[63:07] to let you know they contain digital
[63:09] tuners. Look for markings with words
[63:11] like integrated digital tuner or digital
[63:14] tuner builtin. Of course, you can refer
[63:16] to your TV manual for that information
[63:18] as well. One warning for you. If the set
[63:20] is labeled as digital or HDTV monitor or
[63:24] digital ready or HDTV ready, it may not
[63:27] contain a digital tuner. If that's the
[63:30] case, you'll need an overthe-air digital
[63:32] set top box to bring in that digital
[63:34] signal. Another way to know if your TV
[63:36] is ready for the end of analog is to
[63:38] test your set. Now, we've been
[63:39] broadcasting DTV tests for months to
[63:42] show you what happens when that analog
[63:43] signal goes away. And this is what it
[63:46] looks like. What we're going to do right
[63:48] now is we're going to turn off the
[63:49] analog broadcast signal here on PDX TV.
[63:52] See, there it went right there. Now, if
[63:53] you're seeing our broadcast right now,
[63:55] then your TV is all set for the
[63:56] transition. You don't have to do
[63:58] anything different than what you're
[63:59] doing right now for your TV to work
[64:02] during the switch.
[64:04] >> What? It's actually harder than it
[64:05] looks.
[64:05] >> And we'll continue running those tests
[64:07] to see if your TV is ready for the end
[64:08] of analog on both Fox 12 and PDXTV. Go
[64:12] to kptv.com for a complete schedule of
[64:15] the upcoming tests. Now, if your TV goes
[64:17] to snow during those tests, you will
[64:19] need a converter box. That box makes
[64:21] digital programming viewable on older
[64:23] TVs. It also offers features you
[64:25] probably don't have right now, like a
[64:27] remote control with a guide feature that
[64:29] tells you what you're watching and tells
[64:31] you what's coming up next. For a list of
[64:33] stores that sell converter boxes, go to
[64:35] kptv.com and click on the digital
[64:38] countdown box that's on the main page.
[64:41] Also, the government is offering $40
[64:43] coupons to help you buy a converter box.
[64:45] Two coupons are available to any
[64:47] household, but they're only valid for 90
[64:50] days. So, when you get your coupons,
[64:52] look for the expiration date on them and
[64:54] use them right away. And if you already
[64:56] got coupons that expired before you
[64:57] could use them, the government has good
[64:59] news for you. We're also going to be
[65:02] able to use the first class mail system.
[65:04] And we're also going to be able to
[65:06] reissue coupons to consumers whose
[65:09] coupons [music] expired before they were
[65:11] able to use them. And you can order your
[65:13] coupons by calling 1888dtv209.
[65:17] That number right there on your screen,
[65:19] or by going to this website, dtv209.gov.
[65:23] And we have all that information online
[65:25] at our website, kptv.com. And we'll
[65:28] bring it to you again during this show.
[65:30] Well, now that you know what the
[65:31] converter box does, and you should have
[65:33] a good idea as to whether you need one,
[65:35] we want to show you how simple they are
[65:37] to install. We checked in with the
[65:38] electronics experts at Fred Meyer to
[65:40] show us in real time just how easy
[65:43] installation is and how it can only take
[65:45] about 3 minutes.
[65:48] And what I want to show you today is
[65:50] just how easy it is to hook up. It's
[65:52] really simple. So, we'll kind of go
[65:53] through the steps. When you get your uh
[65:56] converter box out of your packaging,
[65:58] just go ahead and plug that in.
[66:00] Actually, leave it unplugged right at
[66:01] first. the antenna that you're using
[66:04] right now to pick up your signals. Uh
[66:07] just a standard VHF UHF antenna. Uh
[66:10] nothing special is needed, the same one
[66:12] you're using right now. You'll take that
[66:14] and unplug it from the back of your set
[66:16] that you had it in. Now, you're going to
[66:18] unplug it into the antenna input on the
[66:21] back of the converter box. And then from
[66:24] there, you're going to need a three-foot
[66:26] cable. And most all the converter boxes
[66:27] come with this three-foot cable. And
[66:29] you're going to plug that into the back
[66:31] of the TV, right into the RF connector.
[66:34] So, screw that into that. And on the
[66:37] other end, you're going to bring it over
[66:39] here
[66:41] and put it into the antenna out. So, let
[66:44] me unplug this one so I can stir this
[66:46] one in here real quick.
[66:48] So, that gets in good and tight.
[66:53] We'll plug this in. Okay, that's all
[66:56] there is to it. Now, from this point, go
[67:00] ahead and turn on your TV, plug this in.
[67:06] You'll want to switch your television to
[67:07] either channel two or excuse me, channel
[67:09] 3 or channel 4. We're going to have it
[67:11] on channel 3, just where it's set right
[67:13] now, cuz you're not going to be using
[67:14] the tuner or anything on your television
[67:16] from this point. When you have the box,
[67:18] it comes with a remote control, and
[67:20] you're going to be using the digital
[67:22] tuner now from this point forward. Okay?
[67:24] So, you just turn the unit on.
[67:27] It'll come up here in a second.
[67:32] And then you want to hit the setup
[67:33] button. Once you hit that, you'll have
[67:36] this screen on here. You're going to go
[67:39] down. You can see right now it's on
[67:40] channel. And we already got the antenna.
[67:43] We want to go over here to uh let's see.
[67:46] Let's hit okay. Down here to autocan. I
[67:50] can get down to it. There we go. And
[67:52] just hit okay at that point. and uh
[67:56] we'll go back.
[68:00] Okay, right now it's scanning through
[68:01] all the signals that are available. And
[68:04] this is with just this little antenna.
[68:07] Takes just a few minutes to go through
[68:09] that.
[68:13] And little light will flash on where it
[68:15] says channel found. And that's picking
[68:17] up all the different channels that are
[68:18] available. Okay, from this point it's
[68:20] all programmed in. It's ready to go. and
[68:22] you can just scan through the different
[68:24] channels that are available. You're
[68:25] going to have a lot more channels with
[68:27] this digital converter box than you did
[68:29] on analog. Um, so there's either two or
[68:33] three or up to four channels like um,
[68:36] you know, on where you used to be just
[68:37] getting one.
[68:39] And of course, we want to go up to our
[68:41] favorite channel up here. There we go.
[68:44] And you're set and ready to roll. It's
[68:46] as simple as that. All right. Well, once
[68:49] you are all hooked up, there is an
[68:50] important final step, and it's a step
[68:52] worth repeating. When you hook up the
[68:54] converter box, you can have it
[68:55] automatically scan for digital channels.
[68:57] In fact, if you're watching us now
[68:59] through a converter box, you probably
[69:00] notice the channel is 12-1 or 49-1. It's
[69:05] important that you rescan both when you
[69:07] hook up your box and after we stop
[69:09] broadcasting in analog on June 12th. If
[69:12] you don't, you might lose some of the
[69:14] stations you're used to getting,
[69:15] including Fox 12 and PDXTV. To rescan,
[69:18] hit the menu button on the remote that
[69:20] comes with your converter box. Choose
[69:22] the automatic or easy scan option and
[69:25] let the box find those digital channels
[69:27] for you. Well, the converter box may not
[69:30] solve every problem. Coming up, why some
[69:32] people may still have a hard time come
[69:33] June, even if they take steps to prevent
[69:36] it now. Plus, a new law will change the
[69:38] way you get rid of your TV and other
[69:40] electronics in case you decide to
[69:41] upgrade your set. What you need to know
[69:43] and how it'll have you living green. And
[69:47] what can you do to help people in our
[69:49] community keep their TVs on after analog
[69:52] signals disappear? Well, there are a lot
