[0:00] clock report. We'll see you back here
[0:01] tonight at 6
[0:04] >> from ABC. [music]
[0:06] This is World News Tonight with Peter
[0:08] Jennings.
[0:08] >> Good evening. We begin tonight trying to
[0:10] sort out what's been happening for the
[0:11] last three nights along the Saudi
[0:13] Arabian Kuwaiti frontier. At first, the
[0:15] military said that the fighting at Kafi
[0:17] near the Saudi coast was a minor
[0:19] incident. Today, it was not regarded as
[0:22] minor when it turned out that 500 Iraqi
[0:24] soldiers had either been captured or
[0:26] given themselves up. And a British
[0:28] commander who was in the area says the
[0:30] Iraqis suffered a major military
[0:32] disaster. Our first report is from ABC's
[0:34] Bill Ricker.
[0:37] The Saudis said they had regain control
[0:39] of Kafgi, but as they patrolled the city
[0:42] today, they ran into sporadic sniper
[0:44] fire and shelling.
[0:56] As they continued trying to clear out
[0:58] Iraqi soldiers hold up and apartment
[1:00] buildings, there was evidence that the
[1:02] Allied victory did not come easily. Just
[1:05] inside the arches to copy, the shells of
[1:08] several burned out Saudi and Qatari
[1:10] tanks and personnel carriers. Reminders
[1:12] that the first attempts to retake the
[1:14] city failed.
[1:20] >> The Saudis said it took two days to
[1:22] reclaim Kafi because of the
[1:23] house-to-house fighting. US Marine
[1:26] reconnaissance teams that were trapped
[1:27] inside the city said the Iraqis fought
[1:30] well during the battle. One Marine
[1:32] worried about becoming a prisoner.
[1:35] >> First thing went through my mind was
[1:36] burn the address book. Uh burn anything
[1:39] I had on me that could be used by the
[1:42] enemy.
[1:42] >> Another Marine says he was wounded
