[0:04] This [music] is the CBS Evening News

[0:07] with Dan Rather reporting from CBS News

[0:10] headquarters in New York.

[0:12] >> Good evening. It was sudden, powerful,

[0:14] and deadly. On a highway in Iraq's

[0:16] western desert, a suicide attacker in a

[0:18] car packed with explosives raced into a

[0:21] US Marine convoy and detonated his bomb.

[0:25] Seven Marines were killed. It's the

[0:27] worst single day for American forces in

[0:29] Iraq since early May. This attack pushed

[0:32] the total number of American troops

[0:34] killed in the Iraq War to at least 989.

[0:38] CBS's Barry Peterson reports. It

[0:40] underscored the many problems still

[1:09] under the ironfisted rule of Islamic

[1:11] fundamentalist in Fallujah. They have

[1:14] created what some call a Taliban-like

[1:16] existence where crimes are punished by

[1:18] beheadings and working with Americans is

[1:21] a death sentence. It is certainly a

[1:23] no-go area for the authorities in Iraq

[1:25] and it's been a no-go area since the

[1:27] fall of Saddam.

[1:28] >> It is part of Iraq's Sunni heartland

[1:31] where tribal warlords and religious

[1:33] leaders are the only rule of law and

[1:35] where terrorist stage attacks like this

[1:37] one today, sometimes trained by outside

[1:40] experts.

[1:41] >> And the no-go zones provide a base for

[1:43] quite
