[1:06] >> What if Kennedy loses? No one in
[1:07] Vietnam.
[1:08] >> Do you?
[1:09] >> In a time of change, he offered justice.
[1:12] And
[1:12] >> after Dr. [music] King was killed, I had
[1:13] anger. Anger like you can't even
[1:15] imagine.
[1:16] >> And for the future of a nation, he
[1:18] offered hope. But we can perhaps

[2:55] >> The always outspoken Rosenne Bar [music]
[2:57] takes your calls. Larry King tomorrow.
[3:02] CNN, the most trusted name in news.
[3:12] We now welcome, always pleasantly
[3:14] welcome, Bill Maher, one of the truly
[3:16] terrific performers, the host of HBO's
[3:18] Real Time with Bill Maher. That's Friday
[3:20] nights at 11:00. He'll be performing at
[3:22] the Comedy Festival at the Coliseum at
[3:24] Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, November
[3:27] 16th. That's Thursday, November 16th.
[3:29] He'll also be part of Comic Relief,
[3:31] which airs live on HBO on November 18th.
[3:34] What happens on Friday the 17th? I go
[3:36] back and do the last show of my season.
[3:39] >> So you go to Vegas, do the 16th. I stand
[3:41] up, [clears throat]
[3:42] >> then right back,
[3:43] >> do HBO,
[3:44] >> then go back on the 18th.
[3:45] >> With the way you work so carefully and
[3:46] change material, isn't that going to be
[3:48] a pretty tough three days?
[3:49] >> I work on the plane, Larry.
[3:51] >> That's a 35minute flight bill.
[3:53] [laughter]
[3:54] >> I know that's how quick I am.
[3:56] >> Okay, Rossville going. What do you
[3:57] think?
[3:58] >> Well, I think everyone I heard Ariana
[4:00] say and we all agree. I think it's about
[4:02] time. Even the Republicans were saying
[4:04] that. Um, but we'll see. I mean, you
[4:07] know, the Democrats still are not really
[4:10] saying what I would like to hear about
[4:12] Iraq because they're still on this page
[4:15] of, okay, we we redeploy to bases and we
[4:19] only come out like when there's trouble.
[4:21] Is that the new plan? But that is sort
[4:23] of what we're doing now. And I don't
[4:24] >> What do you want to do?
[4:25] >> Got to get out of there.
[4:27] >> Has anyone ever been in a bad
[4:28] relationship in this administration? Do
[4:30] they understand that when it goes this
[4:32] bad, there's nothing you can do? Uh we
[4:34] did an editorial a couple of weeks ago
[4:36] about think tanks because you know it's
[4:38] the think tanks that got us into this
[4:39] war that's who they listen to the
[4:41] neocons all these people who made all
[4:43] these predictions and every one of the
[4:45] predictions and I could go down the list
[4:47] from WMDs to will be greeted as
[4:49] liberators to the Iraqi oil will pay for
[4:52] the war every is over
[4:54] >> ex in its last throws every one of them
[4:57] dead wrong and these are the people who
[4:59] are now saying well if we pull out of
[5:01] Iraq a b and c will
[5:05] Isn't your prediction quota up? How
[5:09] about we just leave Iraq and we'll see
[5:11] what happens? Because I think what we've
[5:13] learned from the Muslim world is it's
[5:15] Allah's will. You know what? What's
[5:17] going to happen in Iraq is going to
[5:19] happen whether we stay or whether we go.
[5:21] These people, we started this cockfight
[5:23] between them. Saddam had a lid on it. We
[5:27] got back in there and retribalized these
[5:29] people. And now the cockfight has
[5:31] started. It's not going to end until
[5:33] they settle it between themselves. And
[5:35] the middle, the people who we went in
[5:37] there to save, the people who were going
[5:39] to have a normal country, the ones they
[5:41] said were going to throw flowers at us,
[5:43] none of those are left. They've all been
[5:44] killed or they left. There's been a mass
[5:47] exodus or they're ethnically dividing
[5:50] themselves. There's a lot of self-ethnic
[5:52] cleansing going on. We went in there to
[5:53] get rid of the snakes in the pit. The
[5:55] only people left in the pit are the
[5:57] snakes and us. I it therefore it doesn't
[6:00] matter who replaces R with Gates or
[6:02] anyone.
[6:03] >> Well, I mean I'd like
[6:04] >> she said the policy is the same no
[6:06] matter who.
[6:06] >> I'd like a smooth exit for our brave
[6:08] troops, but the important thing is to
[6:11] get the troops out of there. When Bush
[6:13] keeps talking about supporting the
[6:14] troops, it's like what world are we
[6:15] living in? The way to support the troops
[6:18] is to remove them from the pointless
[6:20] nightmare you put them in, not to stop
[6:22] the Dixie Chicks or John Ky from telling
[6:24] a joke about them.
[6:27] Uh therefore, you do not expect based on
[6:29] what the Democrats are saying much
[6:31] change in the next two years.
[6:32] >> Oh, I do. I hope. But it's certainly not
[6:34] their call. They can't force the
[6:36] president to remove the troops. They
[6:39] can't force the defense
[6:40] >> to stop the funding.
[6:41] >> But they're not going to do that because
[6:43] they know they would never win another
[6:44] election because they're afraid of a 30
[6:46] secondond attack ad that says they took
[6:48] money away from the troops. See, it's
[6:51] all about supporting the troops.
[6:52] >> What about last night? What did you make
[6:54] of last night? No Democratic incumbent
[6:57] lost in any race.
[6:59] >> Yeah. Well, I mean, first of all, it was
[7:00] nice to win one. I felt like black
[7:03] people at the OJ Simpson trial. Finally,
[7:06] whether it was just or not, we won one.
[7:08] Uh, and when I say we, I'm not even a
[7:10] Democrat. I just mean people of common
[7:11] sense. And that's who this really was a
[7:13] victory for. And I think it it was
[7:16] great. You know, it it's hopeful to see
[7:18] that America can change course. all that
[7:22] stuff about gerrymandering and, you
[7:24] know, the Republican advantage in money
[7:26] and get out the vote. Well, it just
[7:29] shows I would never accuse the American
[7:31] people of being quick, but they do catch
[7:33] on eventually and they can self-correct
[7:36] and they're not as conservative. I
[7:38] always say this as people think they
[7:40] are. That was Carl Ro's great genius. He
[7:42] convinced the Democrats that America was
[7:45] really so far to the right that even
[7:46] they had to run so far to the right that
[7:49] people would of course people were never
[7:51] going to vote for these so-called
[7:53] Hillary centrist, you know, Republican
[7:56] light Democrats, John Kerry and his Gus
[7:58] goose hunting outfit. Of course, they
[8:01] always lost those elections. Now,
[8:02] Democrats maybe have have found their
[8:05] feet again.
[8:06] >> What surprised you? um very little
[8:09] because I really did think it was going
[8:11] to be a big rep a big Democrat victory.
[8:15] Um I thought people had to have been fed
[8:18] up with what was going on. What
[8:20] Democrats have to take away from this
[8:22] and I think they already have learned
[8:23] this lesson is that it wasn't really a
[8:25] victory for you. It reminded me of the
[8:27] World Series. The the St. Louis
[8:29] Cardinals didn't really win. Uh the
[8:31] Detroit Tigers lost it. Every game I
[8:33] tuned in, the Tigers were throwing the
[8:34] ball over the infield, over people's
[8:36] heads. the Cardinals just stood on the
[8:39] field and won. That's sort of where the
[8:41] Democrats are. Um, let's see if you can
[8:44] win an election against a party that
[8:46] hasn't disgraced itself so horribly in
[8:49] every single way a party could disgrace
[8:51] itself.
[8:51] >> What did you make of the press
[8:52] conference this morning?
[8:54] >> It's interesting. Bush, who normally
[8:57] sounds like he cannot string a sentence
[8:59] together,
[9:01] but when he's angry, and you could tell
[9:03] he was angry, and when he's talking
[9:05] about the one subject where he is smart
[9:07] on, hard ball politics, he's actually
[9:10] quite articulate, he actually should be
[9:12] Carl Roe. He should never have been
[9:14] president. That's what he would do
[9:16] better. And and you could see he was mad
[9:17] at Carl Rove. And he should be because
[9:19] Carl Rove had has led this Republican
[9:22] party down a hole here. I think
[9:23] >> he's led him to victories, though. give
[9:25] them some credit.
[9:26] >> Yeah, but look where they are now. They
[9:28] lost every part of the country except
[9:30] the South. Really, the Republican party
[9:32] now is the old Confederacy. And this was
[9:35] Carl Ro's method. See, Carl Ro went
[9:37] against what everybody always did in
[9:38] politics was to run toward the center.
[9:40] Carl Rove said, "No, let's go to the
[9:43] real far right base." And that's where
[9:45] he ran and that's all he's got left now.
[9:48] Everybody else left him. All the
[9:49] independents are gone. Even evangelicals
[9:52] voted in numbers for Democrats. Not not
[9:55] the majority,
[9:56] >> but 25% though. I think
[9:57] >> that's a lot more than they used to.
[9:59] >> We [snorts] have an email question from
[10:01] Carol in Honolulu. Do you think it's a
[10:03] coincidence that the Dow Jones reached
[10:05] record highs and gas prices went down
[10:07] right around election day?
[10:09] >> Not really. I don't think anything is a
[10:11] coincidence. And I'm always amused when
[10:13] President Bush talks about something on
[10:16] the other side that benefits the
[10:18] Democrats and he goes, "You know, the
[10:20] timing of this is very interesting."
[10:22] Yeah, I think it was interesting timing
[10:24] that Saddam Hussein was sentenced to
[10:26] death two days before the election. But
[10:28] you see, none of those old Republican
[10:30] tricks worked this time. John Kerry's
[10:32] botched joke had no traction. The people
[10:36] shrugged when Saddam was going to be
[10:38] executed because they knew he was never
[10:39] a threat to us in the first place. All
[10:41] that stuff went away.
[10:43] >> What do you make of the Mark Foley
[10:44] scenario? That scenario and the fact
[10:47] that with his name on the ballot, the
[10:49] candidate running in his place lost.
[10:53] >> Well, isn't that what we expected? I
[10:55] mean,
[10:56] >> that's pretty close. That's a big
[10:58] Republican district.
[11:00] >> Yeah, but he was hitting on [laughter]
[11:03] 16year-old boys. You know, when you when
[11:05] you when you go to your base and one of
[11:08] your big calling guards at the base is
[11:10] that kissing boys is one of the worst
[11:12] things that could ever happen to America
[11:14] and then lots of people in your party uh
[11:17] turn out to be gay. You know, I'm sure a
[11:19] lot of the base wanted to vote a
[11:20] straight Republican ticket. They
[11:22] couldn't find a straight Republican.
[11:24] >> Ladies and germs.
[11:25] >> Well, speaking of that, what do you make
[11:27] of of uh Ted Haggard? [laughter]
[11:30] >> I'm doing a bit of a editorial on him
[11:32] this week. Uh, so I've been thinking
[11:34] about him a lot. Uh, not in that way,
[11:37] but uh, and if folks don't know who Ted
[11:39] Hagert is, he is the president of the
[11:41] American Evangelical Council. He is a
[11:44] pretty big fish in the evangelical
[11:46] movement in charge of 45,000 churches
[11:49] and 30
[11:50] >> talks to the White House every Monday.
[11:51] >> Talks to the White House every usually
[11:53] about gay bashing. Well, I mean,
[11:55] [clears throat] not to put too fine a
[11:57] point on it, but I do think that when a
[12:00] party is um so divided against itself,
[12:05] eventually that comes to the four. It's
[12:07] so ironic. Republicans, the
[12:08] anti-abortion party, always trying to
[12:11] kill something inside of themselves. And
[12:14] Frank Rich wrote about this a couple of
[12:15] weeks ago. He said, "Yes, we've heard
[12:17] about Mark Foley, and then every week it
[12:19] s seemed another congressman was outed."
[12:22] But he said that's just the beginning of
[12:25] it. A lot of the chiefs of staff, the
[12:28] people who really run the underpinnings
[12:30] of the Republican party are gay. I don't
[12:34] want to mention names, but I will Friday
[12:35] night. But
[12:36] >> you will Friday night.
[12:37] >> Well, there's a couple of big people who
[12:39] I think everyone in Washington knows who
[12:41] run the Republican.
[12:42] >> You will name them.
[12:43] >> Well, I I wouldn't be the first. I'd get
[12:46] sued if I was the first.
[12:47] >> The question is,
[12:48] >> maybe you don't go to the same bath
[12:49] house I do, Larry. Why would a someone
[12:51] who is gay take public anti-gay
[12:54] positions? Why would you why would you
[12:56] do that?
[12:58] >> Because Larry, hating yourself is the
[13:00] greatest love of all.
[13:02] >> We're going to [laughter]
[13:05] self-loathing.
[13:06] >> What a great way to close out this
[13:07] segment. You know, it's poignant. We'll
[13:10] be right back. [laughter]
[13:12] >> The only thing that can stop Democrats
[13:14] now is a last minute joke from John
[13:16] Kerry.
[13:19] >> [applause]
[13:19] >> That's the only thing.
[13:21] >> So Joe Lieberman opened up an Ark of the
[13:24] Covenant can of whoopass on his foes
[13:27] having lost the primary. Lieberman wins
[13:29] the election [music] uh saying quote
[13:31] booy.
[13:35] Today in Florida on the last day of
[13:37] campaigning, a Republican politician
[13:39] [music] refused to appear in public with
[13:41] President Bush because the president is
[13:43] so unpopular.
[13:45] Yeah. And it's it's worse [music] than
[13:46] it sounds because the politician was
[13:48] former Congressman Mark Foley.
[13:50] [laughter]
[13:55] [music]
[13:56] >> Here's a radically simple suggestion
[13:58] from Eloone. You can lower your rising
[14:00] monthly payments by consolidating your
[14:02] debt with a home equity loan and paying
[14:04] one lower monthly rate. Just call 1800
[14:06] Try Elone or go to eloone.com. Eloone.
[14:09] [music] Radically simple. Let me tell
[14:12] you about a very important phone call I
[14:14] made. When I got my Medicare [music]
[14:16] card, I realized I needed an ARP
[14:19] Medicare supplement insurance card, too.
[14:21] >> One simple call gave me [music] the
[14:23] chance to talk with a personal health
[14:25] insurance adviser
[14:26] >> who answered all my questions about
[14:28] Medicare supplement plans. If you're
[14:30] already on or eligible for Medicare,
[14:32] call now to find out how an AARP [music]
[14:34] Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan
[14:36] insured by United Healthcare Insurance
[14:38] Company helps you pay some of [music]
[14:39] the 20% of your medical expenses not
[14:42] covered by Medicare Part B. That can
[14:44] [music] save you thousands of dollars.
[14:46] These are the only Medicare supplement
[14:47] insurance plans exclusively endorsed by
[14:50] AARP, a name you trust. [music] When you
[14:52] call now, we'll send you this free
[14:54] information kit, plus this free guide to
[14:56] understanding Medicare. [music] I can
[14:57] keep my own doctor and choose my own
[14:59] hospital
[15:00] >> and I don't need a referral to see a
[15:02] specialist.
[15:02] >> Call [music] 18006734168
[15:05] now. A personal health insurance advisor
[15:08] is waiting.
[15:13] >> What if you could leverage a
[15:15] dramatically powerful tool that gave
[15:17] your business an immediate competitive
[15:19] advantage? A tool that easily captured
[15:23] contact information from business cards,
[15:24] [music] email, and websites, and turned
[15:27] those leads into assets you could act
[15:30] on. Well, Card Scan is that tool.
[15:33] [music]
[15:34] It's the only contact management
[15:36] solution you need to add real value to
[15:38] your contact [music] data. Cardcan

[15:43] cards in seconds and let you drag
[15:45] [music] and drop contact data from email

[15:51] from any [music] browser, backs it up,
[15:53] and syncs it with PDAs and smartphones.
[15:56] It also [music] works with Outlook and
[15:58] other contact management systems.
[16:01] Visit our [music] website and try Cards

[16:05] guaranteed, or your money back. Cardcan,

[16:12] Eastern, what really happens when our
[16:14] [music] war veterans come home. How
[16:17] families in the medical community help
[16:19] heal their wounds. An unforgettable
[16:21] Anderson [music] Cooper 360. CNN Monday
[16:24] night, 10 Eastern.
[16:30] [music]
[16:32] Give us a little bit more of that Dan
[16:33] Rather. You know what I'm saying? A
[16:34] little bit more of that homespun kind of
[16:38] [laughter]
[16:39] >> how. So,
[16:41] >> for example, Hillary Clinton, uh, we
[16:43] knew she was going to win in a
[16:44] landslide, but, uh, I mean, how would
[16:46] you, Dan, rather, you know, describe the
[16:49] largeness of her victory? It
[16:51] >> it was a healthy margin. [laughter]
[16:59] [laughter]
[17:03] How about she ran away with it like a
[17:05] hobo with a sweet potato pie?
[17:10] That was cute. Now, Bill Maher is our
[17:13] guest. Don't forget the night of
[17:14] November 16th at Caesar's Palace in Las
[17:18] Vegas, Bill Maher will be performing.
[17:19] You can get tickets through Ticatron and
[17:22] of course through
[17:22] >> my full act, my stand back where I bring
[17:25] it.
[17:27] Bringing it on.
[17:27] >> Bring you've never seen him in. It's one
[17:30] of the great standup artists. You will
[17:32] have a great time.
[17:33] >> Bring a split for your side. [snorts]
[17:36] Where does this poise the Democrats now
[17:38] in their race for the presidency? Who
[17:39] forges ahead?
[17:42] >> I don't know who, but I I do think um
[17:45] they're well positioned because I think
[17:48] this was a re-evaluation on the part of
[17:51] the country uh about conservativism in
[17:54] general. I think people made the
[17:56] decision that it has failed them. I
[17:58] mean, if you look at what happened first
[18:00] under Reagan, what did they really
[18:02] accomplish? Um, the fall of the Soviet
[18:05] Union, which they take credit for, which
[18:06] but which we all know was a bipartisan
[18:10] endeavor that took 50 years. Reagan
[18:12] played his part, played it well in the
[18:14] third act.
[18:15] >> It did.
[18:16] >> Okay. But it wasn't just him. And it
[18:18] wasn't just the 80s. The Soviet Union
[18:21] was going to fall. Uh maybe he
[18:23] precipitated it by a few years, but that
[18:25] was something that was inevitable. He
[18:27] ran up the debt and so did George Bush.
[18:29] Somehow the people, these conservatives
[18:31] who say that they're adults, this is the
[18:34] CEO administrations, well, they didn't
[18:37] act very much like efficient CEOs in
[18:39] Iraq or Katrina. They ran up the debt.
[18:41] They don't seem to be who they say they
[18:43] are. And if I think when people look
[18:44] back at what has been accomplished in
[18:46] America, Social Security, Medicare,
[18:48] civil rights, it has been under
[18:50] Democratic progressive administrations.
[18:52] >> If the Democrats are prime for a
[18:54] victory, who might lead them? Um, I
[18:57] don't think this I don't think Bush's
[18:59] um, presidency is good for Barack Obama
[19:02] because I think people are going to say,
[19:04] "Well, we want someone with some
[19:05] experience. We've learned our lesson
[19:08] about putting people in office who are a
[19:10] little too young and a little too green
[19:13] for the job." Not that I'm saying Obama
[19:15] is, but you know, you know, I think that
[19:18] that worked against Harold Ford in
[19:20] Tennessee. Uh, he was that's the one
[19:22] that the Democrats didn't win last
[19:24] night. And of course, it also is the the
[19:26] one that had a really dirty ad. That was
[19:29] the Call Me Harold ad. And I think the
[19:31] message to the Republicans is dirty
[19:33] works. But that's the message they like.
[19:35] >> Are we leading here to Hillary?
[19:37] >> Well, I think she's certainly going to
[19:39] run. I certainly think she's going to be
[19:41] a formidable
[19:43] presence to beat. Uh I've said to you
[19:46] before on this show, I don't think she's
[19:48] the right candidate because I think
[19:50] she's always trying to tack toward the
[19:53] center. And as I keep saying, I think
[19:55] America is a lot more liberal than
[19:57] people realize. Um, what what is
[20:00] liberal? By the way, Nancy Pelosi, you
[20:02] know, another Republican trick that
[20:04] didn't work. Nancy Pelosi, they tried to
[20:06] scare people. She's from ah, SAN
[20:09] FRANCISCO. YOU KNOW, like San Francisco
[20:10] is Devil's Island. Hello, it's part of
[20:13] America. It's actually a rich city. They
[20:15] make a lot of money. It's part of
[20:16] Silicon Valley. Are the Republicans
[20:18] against money now? I don't think so. But
[20:21] uh you know, we don't really have a left
[20:23] wing in America anymore. Nancy Pelosi
[20:25] isn't to the left. She's she's left
[20:28] middle. She's not for socialized
[20:31] medicine or, you know, legalizing drugs.
[20:33] She was the first person to criticize
[20:35] Hugo Chavez when he made that speech
[20:38] against Bush. Um the only people who are
[20:41] really on the left left are like Ralph
[20:43] Nater and the new senator from Vermont,
[20:45] Bernie Sanders, Dennis Kusunich. But uh
[20:49] we really don't have a left wing.
[20:51] >> Let's take a call for Bill Maher, Miami.
[20:53] Hello.
[20:54] >> Yes. Hi uh Bill, I'm enjoying your
[20:56] comments. My question is now that the
[20:59] election is over and the Democrats have
[21:02] a mandate. Who do you think actually has
[21:05] the courage in the Democratic party to
[21:07] step up and articulate exactly what they
[21:10] stand for, what they're going to do,
[21:12] what they want to see? Because there's a
[21:14] risk in that person doing that. But you
[21:17] know, we're sick of all of the
[21:18] demonizing terminology. Now is the time
[21:21] now that we the Democrats have won.
[21:23] >> You mean who's who's going to take the
[21:24] mantle? Who's
[21:25] >> who's going to step up and actually say
[21:27] what they're going to do?
[21:29] >> I don't know. But I would correct the
[21:31] nice lady to begin with in saying they
[21:33] don't have a mandate. Once again, they
[21:36] didn't win this election. The
[21:37] Republicans lost this election. And when
[21:40] you're a party that's not in power,
[21:41] you're not supposed to have someone
[21:42] who's the head unless you have a say
[21:45] Democratic candidate and ain't going to
[21:46] be Carrie,
[21:47] >> right?
[21:48] >> No. Uh I don't know. But that's that's a
[21:51] healthy problem to have to see who has
[21:53] the guts to step forward. Um what I
[21:56] would like to see the Democrats do is
[21:58] what the Republicans did um in the late
[22:03] 60s7s when Reagan was first running and
[22:06] so forth. Barry Goldwater when they had
[22:08] the guts to say here's where I stand and
[22:11] I will just stay by my principles and
[22:13] the people will eventually come to me
[22:15] and they did and I think if the
[22:17] Democrats would do that it would be an
[22:18] easier journey for the people because I
[22:20] think they're already closer.
[22:21] >> Was the Allen web race the most
[22:23] interesting to you?
[22:25] >> It is absolutely because I think George
[22:28] Allen uh who looks like he is going to
[22:30] go down and I really hope he does
[22:31] because he's not a bright man. uh he's
[22:34] very much like President Bush and if he
[22:36] goes down I think it's a s it's it's
[22:38] symbolic to me anyway uh that that type
[22:41] of politics may have seen its better
[22:43] days. The politics of an empty suit who
[22:46] we get to run because he's the the son
[22:49] of somebody famous and he's a guy we'd
[22:51] like to have a beer with and he's from
[22:53] the South and he's got crap on his shoes
[22:55] and he wears a cowboy hat. you know, all
[22:58] that stuff that was charming about
[22:59] George Bush uh is not so charming
[23:02] anymore. And George Allen to me
[23:04] represented that sort of politics. He
[23:06] thought he was going to be the next
[23:08] George Bush.
[23:09] We'll take a break and we'll be back
[23:11] with more more emails and more phone
[23:12] calls for Bill Maher. Don't go away.
[23:16] >> And you heard about the Michael J. Fox
[23:18] situation. He's been doing ads in
[23:20] support of candidates who are for stem
[23:22] cell research. and Rush Limbbo attacked
[23:26] him and said that Michael J. Fox was off
[23:29] his medication when he filmed the ad so
[23:32] that he'd look shakier. And he said if
[23:34] he's not going to take his prescription
[23:35] drugs, he knows a fat drug addict who
[23:38] will.

[26:49] Say, "Why all the glum faces?" Actually,
[26:52] I thought we were going to do fine
[26:53] yesterday.
[26:55] Are you bringing this up so everybody
[26:56] else gets kind of jealous? Uh, if you
[26:59] look at race by race, it was close. The
[27:01] cumulative effect, however, was not too
[27:03] close. It was a thumping. So, this isn't
[27:06] my first rodeo.
[27:08] >> Think I'm nuts.
[27:11] >> The elections were close. The cumulative
[27:13] effect.
[27:15] >> Is it is it thumping? [music]
[27:16] >> Thumping.
[27:16] >> And [laughter]
[27:21] is he funny? No, but at least he doesn't
[27:25] try to be too funny, which is John K's
[27:29] problem. And you know, I think it's a
[27:30] shame that somebody who I feel would be
[27:32] a good president, John Kerry, um, now a
[27:35] lot of people saying that he's toast
[27:38] because Alec Baldwin said it on my show
[27:40] the other night, he said, you know, part
[27:42] of the entry fee to get into this race
[27:44] to be president is you got to be able to
[27:47] stay away from the verbal landmines.
[27:50] And why would anyone though think that
[27:53] he'd be against the troops since he went
[27:55] twice himself?
[27:57] >> Why why did they vote in 2004 on that
[28:00] basis? Why was Carl Rove and his
[28:02] Swiftboat proxies able to convince
[28:05] America, at least some of America,
[28:07] enough of America, that the true war
[28:10] hero was actually a coward or or a
[28:13] denigrator of the troops and the draft
[28:15] dodger? And yes, as I've said on the
[28:17] show before, Bush is a draft dodger.
[28:19] Anyone who Vietnam era figured out a way
[28:22] not to go to Vietnam, draft, dodge the
[28:25] war. How come he was the hero? Well, you
[28:28] know, you can fool some of the people
[28:29] some of the time. You can't do it
[28:30] forever.
[28:32] >> But John Kerry should have that was
[28:35] >> he should have called him out. Exactly.
[28:37] David Mamemoth wrote a great article
[28:39] about that. He said, you know, it's like
[28:40] poker. You got to raise the bet because
[28:43] if you sit at the table and just slowly
[28:45] ante without ever raising, you will ante
[28:48] away your hand your your pot until you
[28:50] have nothing left. And that's what the
[28:52] Democrats did. If John Kerry had called
[28:54] him out and um you know when I talk to
[28:57] people who are not political junkies
[28:59] like us who just follow it briefly,
[29:01] that's what I hear basically is, hey, if
[29:04] John Ky couldn't have stood up to Bush,
[29:06] how's he going to stand up to the
[29:07] terrorists? It's real basic, but that's
[29:10] the kind of stuff that wins elections or
[29:11] loses it.
[29:12] >> We have another email from Terry in
[29:14] Smyrna, Tennessee. How do we get the
[29:16] cost of running for office back to
[29:18] manageable levels so you don't have to
[29:20] be rich to run?
[29:23] >> The cost of running for office. Oh, get
[29:26] it. Get stop TV ads. That's the only
[29:29] way. How
[29:30] >> how you going to do that?
[29:32] >> Well, you could. England does it. Lots
[29:33] of countries do it. Make it publicly
[29:35] financed. just say this is too important
[29:38] to sell a candidate like we do soap and
[29:40] dog food and have it public. That would
[29:43] solve so many problems. And the people
[29:44] who would like that the most are the
[29:46] people in office. They're the ones who
[29:48] will tell you they have to spend all
[29:49] their time raising money. That's why
[29:52] nothing gets done in Washington. It's
[29:53] one of the reasons because they only
[29:55] work Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
[29:56] Monday and Friday got to raise money.
[29:57] They go to fundraisers all the time and
[30:00] they can't get anything done.
[30:02] But media, people who outrun the media
[30:05] wouldn't like that.
[30:06] >> No. But that's also why you don't see a
[30:09] lot of local coverage because they want
[30:12] you to pay for those ads, the local
[30:13] media. If they give the coverage for
[30:15] free, then there's no reason, no
[30:18] motivation for you to buy airtime and
[30:21] say your piece. So, the situation works
[30:24] against everything that is good and
[30:26] democratic the way we have it. And uh
[30:29] and it's ironic that you know in in
[30:31] television in advertising you can lie
[30:33] about nothing but a candidate.
[30:36] Liststerine cannot say it you know kills
[30:38] the germs that cause bad breath but it
[30:40] really doesn't. That's false
[30:41] advertising. Get sued for that. But you
[30:44] know you can say Harold Ford wants to
[30:46] jump on white women at the Playboy
[30:48] Mansion and that's okay.
[30:49] >> We'll be back with more of Bill Maher
[30:51] right after this.
[30:53] >> I am America.

[31:16] I hesitate to ask this. What's happening

[31:26] how that swings.

[35:08] >> Hi, Bill. Um, I have a quick question
[35:10] for you about '08. It seems to me the
[35:12] Democrats do have someone who's actually
[35:14] experienced, intelligent, and has a
[35:17] plan. And that would be Joe Biden. So,
[35:20] if he could get enough funds, I'm
[35:21] wondering what you think of his chances
[35:22] in ' 08.
[35:23] >> He was just on the show tonight.
[35:25] >> I like Joe Biden. He uh he can speak his
[35:28] mind. He doesn't, you know, always come
[35:29] off like a politician who's straddling
[35:32] and waffling and listening to the polls.
[35:34] Um he's he's got experience, you know,
[35:37] and he strikes people as somebody who's
[35:38] not some left-wing nut. And I think what
[35:41] Democrats learned in this election is uh
[35:44] stay away from, you know, stay away from
[35:47] taking away people's guns and stay away
[35:49] from gay marriage. And you know what? I
[35:52] am willing to give the opposition those
[35:54] two things. I think there should be more
[35:56] gun control, but not if it's going to
[35:58] lose the whole country to a bunch of
[36:00] right-wing nuts who are going to take
[36:01] the country way down into a ditch. You
[36:04] know what? People want their guns. We're
[36:05] never going to get rid of them. That was
[36:07] a big issue in a lot of states. And Gal
[36:09] Gore probably lost the 2000 election
[36:11] over that. And gay marriage, you know
[36:13] what? People don't I don't I used to
[36:15] think people hated gays in this country.
[36:16] I don't think they do. I think they're
[36:18] smarter than that. But they, for some
[36:20] reason, they want marriage. They want to
[36:21] own that word. They really do. They
[36:24] don't want it to be about Bruce and
[36:26] Steve. They just want to own marriage
[36:29] and they want to have their guns. And if
[36:30] they if you give them that, apparently
[36:33] the Democrats can get it.
[36:34] >> He's saying give a married couple a pair
[36:36] of Red Rider rifles.
[36:38] >> Give married people guns and let them
[36:40] kill each other. That's what I'm saying.
[36:43] [laughter]
[36:44] That's my platform, Larry.
[36:48] >> Um, question from Fran in Wilsbury,
[36:50] Pennsylvania. Email. If you could offer
[36:52] advice to the new Congress, what would
[36:54] it be?
[36:56] >> Work together,
[36:58] which is what the Democrats are saying
[36:59] now. Uh, and I think they will.
[37:01] Democrats are not vindictive like
[37:04] Republicans. And I know the Republican,
[37:05] oh, Bill, how can you say that? Both
[37:06] parties are bad. No, they're both bad in
[37:09] a lot of ways, but there are
[37:10] differences. When Clinton got into
[37:12] office, there was no effort at all made
[37:15] to work with him. The idea from the
[37:17] get-go was he's illegitimate and we must
[37:20] destroy him in any way possible. And
[37:23] they found a way. Paula Jones and Monica
[37:25] Lewinsky. Nonsense. But that was idea.
[37:28] Destroy. Um I don't think the Democrats
[37:31] are that way. I think they will work
[37:34] together or try to work together. You
[37:36] know Bush Bush was asked the other day
[37:39] on Fox News when he was giving
[37:41] interviews. He and they said, "What do
[37:43] what do you like least about your job?"
[37:45] And he said, "The tone in Washington,
[37:49] very ugly, you know, the tone." Well,
[37:52] who did more to create that tone than
[37:54] you and your pitbull, Carl Rove? The guy
[37:57] who just finished running by telling
[38:00] people that the terrorists want the
[38:03] Democrats to win. But the tone in
[38:06] Washington is ugly. Well, I hope I hope
[38:08] the Democrats improve that. Back with
[38:11] more some more moments with Bill Mah.
[38:13] It's always great having him. on the
[38:15] way.
[38:16] >> He had a press conference about Iraq and
[38:19] he said, "I know a lot of the American
[38:20] people are not satisfied with our
[38:22] progress in Iraq. I'm not satisfied with
[38:24] our progress in Iraq." And then a
[38:26] reporter said, "Are you dissatisfied?"
[38:27] He said, "No." [laughter]
[38:31] Almost like he's an idiot. [laughter]
[38:47] >> [music]
[38:51] >> For each of us, there is a moment of
[38:53] discovery. We understand that all of
[38:55] life is elemental. And as we marvel at
[38:58] element bonding with element, we soon
[39:01] realize that when you add the human
[39:02] element to the equation, everything
[39:05] changes. Suddenly, all of chemistry
[39:08] illuminates humanity. And all of
[39:10] humanity illuminates chemistry. [music]
[39:13] The human element. Nothing is more
[39:15] fundamental.
[39:17] Nothing more elemental.

[39:22] >> Head on. Apply directly to your

[39:51] >> When tragedy struck, her actions.
[39:54] >> No member of the royal family will speak
[39:55] publicly about this
[39:56] >> divided a nation. You have damaged the
[39:58] monarchy. It's the best picture of the
[40:00] year from acclaimed director Steven
[40:02] Friers. The queen. Rated PG-13. Now
[40:04] playing in select theaters. All right,
[40:06] guys. Keep your eyes open. You don't
[40:08] know what you're going to see. If you

[40:12] tropical rainforest.
[40:14] >> Huh?
[40:16] >> Lucky [music] day. To your left, a
[40:18] scantily clad native. Kungpow.

[41:06] >> CNN Friday night. On the eve of Veterans
[41:09] Day, Lou Dos pays tribute to our men and
[41:12] women in uniform. Don't miss this
[41:14] important special for American heroes.
[41:18] CNN Friday night, 7 Eastern.
[41:32] >> [cheering]
[41:56] >> indications Now that the Republicans may
[41:58] be a little discouraged about the
[41:59] upcoming elections tomorrow. Take a look
[42:05] [music]
[42:09] where
[42:11] from the Republican party.
[42:15] You see [applause]
[42:20] what are you going to do?
[42:22] >> Bill. Bill wanted to mention something.
[42:24] a guy who deserves some credit that he
[42:26] hasn't gotten, Howard Dean.
[42:27] >> Yeah. Well, we were just talking in the
[42:29] break about that and you know Howard
[42:31] Dean was the guy who said run a 50-state
[42:34] campaign. There was a big fight within
[42:36] the party about that and he said we
[42:38] can't do it the way we have been doing
[42:41] it with just the coasts and Chicago
[42:44] basically. Uh we got to win. We got to
[42:46] play in the in the whole country. And uh
[42:49] he turned out to be right. He turned to
[42:51] be right about a lot of things. You
[42:52] know, I know he's an insane person
[42:54] because he once spoke three octaves
[42:56] above the normal level of where we
[42:58] speak. So, of course, he's an insane
[42:59] crazy man who can't run for president.
[43:01] But maybe they had the right guy to
[43:03] begin with. He was certainly right about
[43:05] Saddam Hussein. Remember, he said
[43:07] capturing Saddam doesn't make us safer.
[43:09] And they all jumped all over him like,
[43:11] "Oh, please. How unpatriotic of you to
[43:13] say that?" Well, you know, 80% of our
[43:16] troops have been killed after we got
[43:18] Saddam. Now, we're going to kill Saddam.
[43:21] still.
[43:21] >> He was opposed to it from the beginning,
[43:23] wasn't he?
[43:23] >> And he was opposed to it from the
[43:24] beginning.
[43:25] >> Atlanta, hello.
[43:26] >> Hello.
[43:27] >> Yeah, you're on.
[43:28] >> Um, hi, Bill. Um,
[43:30] >> hey,
[43:30] >> I just wanted to say, um, your show is
[43:33] awesome.
[43:34] >> Thank you.
[43:35] >> Yes. And, um, I have a question for you.
[43:38] >> No.
[43:39] >> Okay. What would you do if Hillary
[43:41] Clinton won at office? A first woman.
[43:47] >> What would I What would I do if she won?
[43:49] He would he would like it from a humor
[43:51] standpoint. It would keep comics going,
[43:53] right? A Hillary presidency.
[43:55] >> Yeah. Well, you know, every president
[43:57] keeps comics going. Nobody, I don't care
[44:00] if it's George Bush, Bill Clinton,
[44:02] Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, will
[44:04] always find the things that are
[44:05] humorous. Nobody can be that much in the
[44:08] public eye, have a big cle light on you
[44:11] 24 hours a day, and not have comedians
[44:13] pick you apart. So, you know,
[44:15] comedically, they're all good. Uh, and
[44:17] as far as being a president, I think
[44:18] Hillary would make a fine president. I
[44:20] just don't think she could ever win.
[44:22] >> Why?
[44:23] >> Because she tries to be all things to
[44:26] all people. She is going, she alienates
[44:29] the real base of the Democratic party by
[44:33] coming out against things like flag
[44:35] burning and, you know, video games and
[44:37] trying to be that Republican light. And
[44:40] of course, she never is going to
[44:41] convince the real Republicans, the real
[44:44] goose hunters, the real NASCAR beer
[44:46] drinkers that she's one of them. So, I
[44:48] think you got you got the worst of both
[44:50] worlds.
[44:51] >> Okay, Bill, let's go over it. On the
[44:52] 16th, you will be in Las Vegas
[44:54] >> doing my standup show. Yes. If you want
[44:56] to split your sides for an hour and a
[44:58] half, come out to see me then. And then
[44:59] on the 18th, I'll be part of the
[45:02] Cavalcade of Comedy Stars on uh Comic
[45:05] Relief, which is televised on HBO that
[45:07] night. And even though that's a Thursday
[45:08] and a Saturday, you'll still be doing
[45:10] your Friday. I'll be back here to do my
[45:12] season finale Friday night.
[45:14] >> Uh,
[45:14] >> who's on this week?
[45:15] >> Uh, who's on this week? Salman Rushy, I
[45:18] know, is on this week. And, uh,
[45:21] >> and some surprise guests. [laughter]
[45:24] >> Never could remember who's on show.
[45:26] Thank you, Larry.
[45:27] >> Bill Maher. It's always great having him
[45:29] with us. Makes you think.
[45:32] And we'll be back tomorrow night. a part
[45:34] of our show tomorrow night
