[0:00] Back here at 6
[0:02] >> from ABC, this is World News Tonight
[0:05] with Peter Jennings.
[0:06] >> Good evening. We begin tonight with the
[0:08] widespread apprehension about an
[0:10] anticipation of a ground war between
[0:12] Iraq and the Allied coalition. The
[0:14] commander of British forces in the Gulf
[0:15] said today that such a war is
[0:17] inevitable. The French president,
[0:18] France, goes even further and says
[0:20] sometime in the next 3 weeks. The
[0:23] chairman of the joint chiefs of staff
[0:24] and the secretary of defense leave for
[0:26] Saudi Arabia tonight to discuss a land
[0:29] war with the overall commander of allied
[0:30] forces, General Norman Schwarzkoff, who

[0:50] come here today to check the morale of
[0:52] his troops and see whether they're ready
[0:54] to go if that's necessary. The troops
[0:56] seemed up and ready to go. And Schwarzko
[0:59] took issue with the report that Allied
[1:01] bombing has not substantially reduced
[1:03] the fighting ability of Iraq's elite
[1:05] Republican Guard.
[1:06] >> Well, I think we've been very effective.
[1:07] I think we've done as much as we thought
[1:09] we do to this to this point and probably
[1:11] more.
[1:12] >> Some Pentagon official unnamed quoted
[1:14] the New York Times as saying it only
[1:16] reduced it by about 10%.
[1:17] >> Yeah. Well, it's amazing how some of
[1:19] these unnamed Pentagon officials get
[1:20] their informati
