[0:01] I'm Katie Couric. Tonight, serious new
[0:03] questions about the government's ability
[0:05] to ensure the safety of the food we eat.
[0:08] Turns out the FDA knew for years about
[0:11] contamination problems that led to
[0:13] illness, even death, but took little
[0:15] action to protect the public.
[0:18] Also tonight, 1 week after the massacre
[0:21] classes resume at Virginia Tech after
[0:24] bells toll
[0:25] for those who won't be returning. And
[0:28] the sun, as you've never seen it before.
[0:36] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Katie
[0:39] Couric.
[0:41] >> Hello everyone. One of the most
[0:43] important things we count on the
[0:44] government to do is to make sure the
[0:46] nation's food supply is safe. Tonight,
[0:49] members of Congress are not sure that

[1:04] many as 5,000 die. Now we learn from
[1:08] government documents that the FDA knew
[1:10] but did little about contamination
[1:12] problems that led to illness and death
[1:14] from tainted spinach last year. We have
[1:17] two reports tonight. First, here's Nancy
[1:20] Cordes.
[1:22] >> In late 2005, a year before a deadly
[1:25] outbreak of E. coli in spinach, the Food
[1:28] and Drug Administration sent a letter to
[1:30] California growers expressing its
[1:32] serious concern over ongoing outbreaks
[1:35] of foodborne illness from that state's
[1:37] lettuce and spinach crops. 19 outbreaks
[1:40] since 1995.
[1:42] The letter did not indicate plans to
[1:44] step up inspections. Instead, it called
[1:46] on the industry to take the appropriate
