[2:12] >> Hello, dear. Yeah, it's a hoax as I

[5:10] Heat. Heat.
[5:24] Good evening once again from the Fleet
[5:25] Center in Boston. I'm Jim Lara and I
[5:28] welcome you to our special PBS NewsHour
[5:30] coverage of the third night of the
[5:32] Democratic National Convention. As
[5:35] always, we'll have the major events from
[5:36] the podium with analysis and commentary
[5:39] from Mark Chiles and David Brooks and
[5:41] historians Michael Bes, Richard Norton
[5:43] Smith, and Ellen Fitzpatrick, among
[5:46] others. This is John Edwards, an
[5:48] official ballot night at the convention.
[5:50] Gwen Eiffel on the floor has the details
[5:52] of what lies ahead this evening. Gwen,
[5:55] >> good even. Good evening again, Jim. Of
[5:57] course, this is John Edwards night, but
[5:59] before that, we're going to see a lot of
[6:00] different themes. divergent voices in
[6:02] the party all gathering together under
[6:04] one umbrella including Al Sharpton who
[6:06] ran for president and Bob Graham who ran
[6:08] for president, the governor from I mean
[6:10] the senator for senator from Florida.
[6:12] Also representatives of the West and the
[6:14] Midwest in the form of Governor Bill
[6:16] Richardson from New Mexico and Governor
[6:18] Jennifer Gran home of Michigan. We're
[6:19] gonna see a parade of past Democratic
[6:22] nominees for president, including
[6:24] Michael Dakus from Massachusetts, of
[6:26] course, was the nominee in 1988, Walter
[6:28] Mande, who was the nominee in 1984, and
[6:31] George McGovern. Then we're going to
[6:33] hear from some generals who are going to
[6:34] attest to John K's strength on military
[6:37] affairs, former joint chiefs of staff
[6:39] chairman, John Cashily, and and in
[6:43] general Claudia Kennedy. And then of
[6:45] course the high point of the night will
[6:46] be hearing from the Edwards family
[6:48] themselves, his daughter Kate, his wife
[6:51] Elizabeth, and then the big speech of
[6:53] the night, John Edwards. Jim.
[6:55] >> Okay, thank you Gwen. We're going to go
[6:57] to the podium in a moment for the
[6:58] national anthem, which will be sung by
[7:00] R&B recording artist Brian Mcnite.
[7:04] >> Delegates and guests,
[7:08] please welcome Brian Mcnite to perform
[7:12] our national anthem. Please rise.
[7:18] >> That is the former mayor of of Denver,
[7:20] Wellington Web.
[7:21] >> If you're proud to be an American,
[7:24] place your right hand over your heart
[7:26] with me.
[7:37] Wave that one like this. Come on.
[7:42] Oh, say
[7:45] can you see
[7:48] by the dawn
[7:50] early light?
[7:53] What's so proudly
[7:56] we hail
[7:59] at the twilight
[8:02] lasting
[8:05] whose broad stripes
[8:08] and bright stars
[8:10] through the perilous
[8:14] fight.
[8:16] All the rains
[8:19] we watched
[8:22] were so gallently
[8:26] streaming.
[8:28] And the rock
[8:31] get
[8:33] the bird
[8:36] sting.
[8:40] made proof
[8:42] through the night
[8:45] that our flag
[8:48] was still there.
[8:51] Oh, say
[8:54] that star
[8:56] sp
[8:58] and
[9:00] away
[9:03] for the land
[9:05] of the free
[9:11] and the home
[9:14] of the
[9:17] bra.
[9:33] And now, syndicated columnist Mark
[9:35] Shields and New York Times columnist
[9:37] David Brooks. Mark, how would you set
[9:39] the scene for tonight?
[9:41] >> The scene for tonight, Jim, is obviously
[9:43] John Edwards is the centerpiece of the
[9:45] evening. Prior to that it is going to be
[9:48] again John
[9:50] >> Kerry is commander and chief John Cash
[9:53] uh cashy
[9:56] the former chairman of the joints chiefs
[9:58] of staff uh is speaking announcing
[10:01] himself to be an old soldier but a new
[10:03] democrat enlisting in John Kerry's army
[10:06] here tonight. Uh again those credentials
[10:09] I mean we're seeing more of running John
[10:11] Kerry as Andrew Jackson or Ulissiz Grant
[10:13] or whatever it is. uh you know that he's
[10:16] the man who was you know tempered and
[10:18] disciplined by this tough battle
[10:20] experience as a young man uh thus
[10:22] qualifying him as a commander-in-chief
[10:24] but and Edwards Edwards has to move it
[10:26] to the future. He really does. The last
[10:28] two nights have been about the past and
[10:29] the glories of the party but has to move
[10:31] it to the future.
[10:32] >> What would you add to that? I
[10:33] >> I just the only thing I'd say is that uh
[10:35] it is all about the commander-in-chief
[10:36] but the the floor is not there. Uh Jesse
[10:39] Jackson gave a speech about an hour ago
[10:41] saying let's bring the troops home. got
[10:43] a standing ovation. Dennis Cusin just
[10:45] spoke. I think I saw three or four
[10:47] standing ovations. The party is to the
[10:49] left. The elite and the Carrie Edwards
[10:51] campaign is to the center, even the
[10:53] center right. And so that's an amazing
[10:55] tension, but because they want to win,
[10:57] it hasn't caused any ruptures. In fact,
[10:59] we
