[0:00] Six
[0:03] >> from ABC. This is World News Tonight
[0:06] with Peter Jennings.
[0:07] >> Good evening. The straws in the wind are
[0:08] these. Tonight, the Secretary of Defense
[0:10] and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of
[0:11] Staff have returned from their weekend
[0:14] in Saudi Arabia with a public message of
[0:16] caution about getting into the ground
[0:18] war too quickly. After they briefed the
[0:20] president today, Mr. Bush said that the
[0:22] air war will continue for a while before
[0:24] any land war begins, which doesn't give
[0:26] Saddam Hussein any real clue as to when
[0:29] the US will make its next move. We begin
[0:32] at the White House tonight with ABC's
[0:34] Brit Hume.

[0:38] Defense Secretary Cheney and Joint
[0:40] Chiefs Chairman Powell, the president

[0:54] continue for a while. Uh we're not
[0:57] talking about dates uh for further
[1:01] uh adding to the air campaign. Put it
[1:03] that way. Uh we are going to take
[1:05] whatever time is necessary to sort out
[1:09] when a next stage might begin.
[1:12] >> The president said holding down US and
[1:15] allied casualties would be his first
[1:17] priority. There have been complaints
[1:19] from some foreign capitals, including
[1:21] Moscow, that the air war designed to
[1:24] curb Allied losses, has caused excessive
[1:26] and unnecessary damage in Iraq. We're
[1:29] the ones that are going to set the time
[1:31] for how this war is this the time for
[1:34] any action that is taken. We are not
