[0:01] I'm Katie Couric in Blacksburg,
[0:03] Virginia, the scene today of the
[0:05] deadliest shooting in US history. A
[0:07] gunman opens fire on the campus of
[0:09] Virginia Tech University. By the time
[0:12] the shooting is over, more than 30
[0:13] people, including the gunman, are dead.
[0:17] Tonight, full coverage of the massacre
[0:19] at Virginia Tech.
[0:26] This is the CBS Evening News with Katie
[0:29] Couric reporting tonight from the campus
[0:31] of Virginia Tech University.
[0:35] And this is an expanded 1-hour version
[0:38] of the CBS Evening News. Hello,
[0:40] everyone. This university may be in
[0:42] southwestern Virginia, but what happened
[0:45] here this morning has shaken the entire
[0:47] nation. A gunman, his motive still
[0:49] unknown, has killed more than 30 people,
[0:52] making it the deadliest shooting in US
[0:55] history. And there was many serious
[0:57] questions tonight about the way campus
[0:59] security and school officials responded
[1:02] to these incidents and whether much of
[1:04] the carnage could have been prevented.
[1:07] Today, the university was struck
[1:10] with a tragedy that we consider of
[1:12] monumental proportions.
[1:13] In the aftermath, these vivid images of
[1:16] terror and tragedy, authorities confirm
[1:19] 33 people dead, including the shooter,
[1:22] at least 26 people injured. The killing
[1:25] spree began about 7:15 a.m. when two
[1:28] people were killed at West Ambler
[1:30] Johnston, a coed dorm that houses about
[1:33] 900. About 9:20 a.m., 2 hours later, 31
[1:38] more would die at Norris Hall, an
[1:40] engineering building.
[1:42] I've heard that a classroom with
[1:43] students were shot and uh basically a
[1:46] gunman went into the classroom,
[1:48] unloaded, and uh none of th
