[0:09] It's 10 past the hour. American
[0:10] officials are hoping to meet with the 24
[0:12] member crew of the US spy plane
[0:14] currently being held in China. President
[0:16] Bush is demanding the safe return of the
[0:18] crew and the plane, one of the most
[0:19] sophisticated intelligence planes in the
[0:21] US fleet. Officials say that after
[0:24] consulting with his foreign policy team,
[0:26] Mr. Bush decided not to call Chinese
[0:28] leaders himself. The reason said to be
[0:30] concern over any appearance that the
[0:31] Bush White House is in a crisis mode.
[0:34] CBS's John Roberts is tracking how the
[0:36] president is handling the China
[0:38] challenge. In his first major foreign

[0:56] of both our countries for better
[0:59] relations. Not yet a crisis, the
[1:01] standoff could quickly become one if it
[1:03] drags on a few more days, says James
[1:05] Sasser, the former ambassador to China.
[1:07] But if they continue to hold the crew
[1:09] and to hold the aircraft and and behave
[1:12] in a belligerent fashion, then I think
[1:14] this is going to have a very chilling
[1:16] effect on uh on Chinese American
[1:18] relations. Already the nature of the
[1:20] relationship is changing. President
[1:22] Clinton embraced the Chinese as
[1:24] strategic partners. Any disagreements we
[1:26] will have, we will conduct ourselves
[1:28] with with mutual respect. President Bush
[1:31] has made it clear he sees the Chinese
[1:33] not as p
