[0:01] 1972 was the year
[0:04] not when America lost its way,
[0:07] but the year when America found its
[0:10] conscience. Thank you.
[0:18] Apparently a very well-received speech.
[0:21] 42-year-old senator from Missouri
[0:25] who despite a distinguished political
[0:27] career spanning 16 years in Missouri
[0:31] and an upset victory over an incumbent
[0:33] senator there 4 years ago,
[0:36] has remained uh
[0:38] pretty much uh an unknown character on
[0:40] the national scene.
[0:43] There he is with his family.
[0:48] Children 13 and 9,
[0:51] wife.
[1:03] Eyes to the camera.
[1:06] Such an outcome would have been
[1:07] impossible
[1:09] 48 hours ago.
[1:11] First learned of possibility, he says,
[1:13] yesterday afternoon.

[1:17] of credence at that time.

[1:31] two children, and they are
[1:33] perfectly delightful.
[1:37] Very bright. They flew down from
[1:39] Washington just this afternoon.
[1:41] I guess the excitement that's running
[1:43] and flowing is keeping them awake till
[1:45] late hour for
[1:47] children.
[1:55] Senator Kennedy has left the VIP trailer
[1:58] behind the hall here, and he is on his
[2:00] way to the podium.
[2:08] There are a lot of delegates here who
[2:12] thought that Senator Kennedy should have
[2:14] been the vice presidential nominee, and
[2:16] only his firm
[2:18] denial uh
[2:20] that he would accept the job
[2:22] kept them from launching a boom for him.
[2:25] He said his first duty is to his family,
[2:28] that of his two slain brothers.
[2:40] It's a great pleasure for me now to
[2:42] present an old friend
[2:44] from back home in Massachusetts, Senator
[2:47] Ted Kennedy.
[3:20] Senator Kennedy and his wife, Joan.
[3:24] Jo
