[0:00] I've helped over 500 people get into
[0:01] elite grad schools, I'm talking Harvard,
[0:03] MIT, and I sat in on a UC Berkeley
[0:05] [music] admissions committee. What I've
[0:07] seen from reading well over a thousand
[0:09] applications, is that it takes something
[0:11] special to stand out in an application
[0:13] pile because universities are using your
[0:16] credentials to eliminate people as
[0:18] quickly [music] as possible. The
[0:19] shortcuts they use to eliminate people
[0:21] have actually nothing to do with your
[0:23] potential. So, if you or someone you
[0:25] love is trying to get into elite grad
[0:27] school, please pass along this video.
[0:29] Dr. Julie Pelt in her book, Inside
[0:31] Graduate Admissions, [music]
[0:32] shares her research findings from
[0:34] sitting in on 10 doctoral admissions
[0:36] committees. [music] And here's what she
[0:38] found. There were no transparent
[0:40] standards for how students are evaluated
[0:42] across universities. But she found that
[0:45] there are three metrics that are
[0:46] consistently used across universities to
[0:49] eliminate an application pile quickly.
[0:51] Those three are [music] one the prestige
[0:54] of your undergraduate institution, two
[0:56] your GPA, and three your test scores.
[0:59] These metrics can easily eliminate you
[1:01] if you are coming from an unrecognized
[1:03] university like outside of the United
[1:04] States, if you're someone who's a first
[1:06] generation college student or an
[1:07] underrepresented minority, or if you're
[1:09] someone who took more time to figure out
[1:11] what you want to study. But here's what
[1:12] I've learned. You can't change your past
[1:14] credentials, but you can be strategic
[1:16] about your future. I
