[0:09] Tonight, homeless shelters charging

[0:11] rent. Why one big city mayor says the

[0:13] cost is a necessity.

[0:16] He's on a mission.

[0:17] >> It's a 5-day trek, about 20 m a day

[0:20] average.

[0:21] >> See just how far this local man walked

[0:23] to help those in need. Fox 12's Most

[0:27] Wanted is armed and dangerous. It really

[0:29] creeps me out.

[0:30] >> What he's been convicted of in the past

[0:32] that police want to make sure does not

[0:34] happen to your child.

[0:37] But first, breaking news from Washington

[0:39] State where one man has died from the

[0:41] flu outbreak. That's first on Fox.

[0:45] >> And good evening. Thanks for joining us

[0:47] tonight. I'm Chad Carter

[0:48] >> and I'm Sophie Sung.

[0:51] >> Live from Fox 12 Oregon. This is

[0:54] breaking news. Breaking news tonight as

[0:56] health officials in Washington confirmed

[0:58] that a Snomish County man died from

[1:00] complications of the H1N1 flu.

[1:03] >> Yeah, he apparently died last week, but

[1:05] health officials did not report the

[1:06] man's death until today. They also say

[1:09] that man, who was in his 30s, had some

[1:11] sort of heart condition. So far, there

[1:14] are 101 confirmed cases of this flu

[1:16] strain in Washington and at least 69 in

[1:19] Oregon. This latest death is the third

[1:22] for the US in the H1N1 outbreak. The two

[1:24] others happened in Texas. Now, officials

[1:27] confirm about 900 people in the US are

[1:30] currently sick with the virus. Stay with

[1:32] Fox 12 as we continue to follow this

[1:34] breaking story. Of course, we'll bring

[1:36] you any new information as soon as it

[1:37] becomes available. And for the latest

[1:39] update anytime, just head to kpv.com.

[1:45] >> Tonight, Fox 12's most wanted is a

[1:47] convicted sex offender who authorities

[1:49] say you should consider to be armed and

[1:51] dangerous. Governor Lewis was sentenced

[1:53] to prison for a sexual assault on a

[1:56] 15-year-old girl. He served his time,

[1:58] but deputies say he hasn't checked in

[2:01] with his parole officer. KPTV's Mark

[2:03] Ross has been following the story and

[2:04] joins us live from Southeast Portland

[2:06] with the latest. Mark?

[2:08] >> Yeah, Sophie Lewis was sentenced to 6

[2:09] and a half years in prison and he was

[2:11] parrolled, but he hasn't checked in with

[2:13] his parole officer. Now, deputies say

[2:15] they don't know where he is, but his

[2:16] brother says the only person that can

[2:18] help Lewis is himself.

[2:21] Looking for Governor Lewis.

[2:23] >> This man says he's Lewis's brother.

[2:25] Tonight, he told us he hadn't seen the

[2:27] 47year-old. Deputies in Multma County

[2:30] hope that you have. They say he sexually

[2:32] assaulted a 15-year-old girl in 2001 and

[2:36] threatened to kill her if she didn't

[2:37] cooperate. One neighbor didn't want to

[2:39] be on camera, but says she's upset to

[2:41] hear that Lewis is on the loose.

[2:43] >> It really creeps me out. Yeah. And since

[2:45] his release from prison two years ago,

[2:47] Lewis has been convicted on new charges

[2:49] for meth possession and for failing to

[2:51] register as a sex offender.

[2:53] >> With those list of charges, it it could

[2:56] be pretty dangerous.

[2:56] >> Okay. Are you a relative?

[2:58] >> Yes, I am on his brother.

[2:59] >> His brother says he's not surprised that

[3:01] Lewis is in trouble.

[3:02] >> Are you aware that he's uh not checked

[3:04] in with his parole officer?

[3:06] >> Yes, I've been by him.

[3:07] >> Is that right? And are you worried about

[3:09] that?

[3:10] >> Um, does it often? Deputies say his

[3:14] criminal record goes back 25 years with

[3:16] convictions for drug possession, half a

[3:18] dozen car thefts, burglary, forgery, gun

[3:21] charges, and more. And tonight, he's on

[3:24] the loose. Neighbors say they want to

[3:25] see him caught.

[3:26] >> High priority um on my list.

[3:29] >> His brother says he doesn't know where

[3:30] Lewis is, but that there's nothing he

[3:32] can do.

[3:33] >> Would you mind if we talk to you about

[3:34] that? I'm sure you'd like to help him.

[3:36] >> Well, you can he has to help himself.

[3:39] And back here live, deputies say that

[3:40] Lewis could be armed and is considered

[3:42] dangerous. They say if you see him,

[3:44] don't approach. Instead, call deputies.

[3:46] Live in Southeast Portland, Mark Ross,

[3:47] the 10:00 news.

[3:49] >> Another one of Fox 12's most wanted is

[3:51] on the run, accused of robbing a cell

[3:53] phone store. Portland police say a man

[3:55] walked into the Cricut store on

[3:56] Southeast 82nd in Powell this afternoon

[3:59] with a gun. Witnesses say he had a

[4:01] bandana over his face and that a red SUV

[4:04] with three men was seen leaving the

[4:06] store afterwards. Well, Portland police

[4:09] responded to a report about gunfire and

[4:11] are now searching for the suspect who

[4:13] pulled the trigger. They whole incident

[4:15] happened about 4:00 this afternoon on

[4:17] Northeast 131st Place. Officers say no

[4:20] one was hit there, but someone gave them

[4:22] a description of a potential shooter and

[4:24] his car. Well, not long after officers

[4:27] began investigating that shooting, they

[4:29] spotted a person driving who matched the

[4:31] suspect's description and tried to stop

[4:34] him. Police say that man took off on I

[4:36] 205, sideswiping two cars and injuring

[4:38] the people inside. The accused driver,

[4:41] identified as Tyrone Bowden, ended up

[4:43] crashing. Police say he then tried to

[4:45] run, but officers caught up with him.

[4:47] They determined Bowden was not involved

[4:49] in the shooting, but he's now facing

[4:51] several charges, including possession of

[4:53] cocaine and attempting to elude.

[4:56] >> Essania County man is behind bars

[4:58] tonight, accused of murder.

[4:59] Investigators say Darcy Bonassic shot

[5:02] and killed his wife sometime early

[5:04] yesterday morning in their Stevenson

[5:06] home. KPTV's Brent Weisberg spent part

[5:08] of the day talking with neighbors about

[5:09] this case. He joins us live with more.

[5:11] Brent,

[5:12] >> this is the first murder for the small

[5:13] town of Stevenson in over a year. And

[5:15] tonight, people in Stevenson say they

[5:17] are shocked the accused murderer grew up

[5:19] in their town.

[5:21] >> You don't think of anything like that

[5:23] ever happening in Stevenson.

[5:25] >> Tonight, the home of Darcy Bonazic sits

[5:27] quiet. It's just really sad.

[5:29] >> Just 24 hours ago, homicide detectives

[5:31] combed through this house looking for

[5:33] evidence.

[5:34] >> When I came back, in front of the house

[5:36] was um seven police cars.

[5:39] >> Investigators say around 6:30 yesterday

[5:42] morning, this man, Darcy Bonazic, called

[5:44] a family member telling him he had just

[5:46] killed his wife. Detectives came out to

[5:49] the home. They found Darcy standing in

[5:51] the driveway and inside the home, they

[5:53] say his wife's body. She had been shot

[5:55] to death. They found her in a bedroom.

[5:58] >> They were both just super nice people.

[6:00] Like got along fine, you know, just

[6:02] really nice.

[6:02] >> It's a crime hard to fathom in this

[6:04] small town.

[6:05] >> There must have been something going on

[6:06] in the house that, you know, no one

[6:08] really knew about cuz everyone's just

[6:10] shocked.

[6:11] >> Neighbors say the two kept to

[6:12] themselves.

[6:13] >> They were quiet people. Like I never saw

[6:16] them anywhere except in their yard or

[6:18] anything. So it's very shocking to me.

[6:20] >> Darcy grew up in Stevenson. His family

[6:22] is well known. That home has been in the

[6:26] community, has been familyowned for many

[6:29] years.

[6:30] >> He went to Stevenson High School, but

[6:31] tonight he sits in the Skomania County

[6:33] Jail accused of murder.

[6:35] >> I was very shocked when they told me

[6:38] just cuz I mean it's Stevenson like

[6:40] things happen but not so close to home.

[6:44] >> The Scammania County Sheriff says Darcy

[6:46] is expected to appear in court as soon

[6:48] as Monday. Reporting live, Brent

[6:50] Weisberg, the 10:00 news. An elderly

[6:52] Salem man is recovering tonight after

[6:54] Marian County deputies say he

[6:56] accidentally shot himself with a gun.

[6:58] The 86-year-old son just gave him the

[7:01] weapon following a breakin this week.

[7:03] Deputies say the man was worried the

[7:05] suspect would return because they took

[7:07] the keys to the house in a car.

[7:09] According to the sheriff's office, the

[7:10] man dropped the gun yesterday, causing

[7:12] it to fire. Paramedics took him to a

[7:14] Salem hospital with a wound to his calf.

[7:17] Well, a two-car crash near Newport

[7:19] killed two people and injured two

[7:21] others. Oregon State Police say the cars

[7:23] crash just before 5:30 last night on

[7:25] Highway 20 just east of Newport.

[7:27] Officers say a Cadillac started to pass

[7:30] a car when it crashed into an oncoming

[7:32] car. This is a photo sent to us by

[7:34] Oregon State Police. Now, that Cadillac

[7:36] rolled onto its top. Both people inside

[7:38] died. Those in the other car both

[7:40] suffered injuries, but are expected to

[7:42] be okay. A crash on another part of

[7:45] Highway 20 caused a semi to roll over

[7:47] near Brothers. Oregon State Police say

[7:49] the truck driver drifted into the on the

[7:51] gravel on the shoulder, causing him to

[7:53] lose control and overturn into an

[7:56] embankment. These pictures taken by OSP.

[7:58] The truck and trailer both landed, as

[8:00] you can see, on their sides. The driver

[8:02] suffered only minor injuries.

[8:04] >> Now, Portland's first weather at 10.

[8:07] >> Hope you had a great Saturday. We had a

[8:09] lot of sunshine today and temperatures

[8:11] warmed up nicely to above average for

[8:14] early May. 70° our high temperature just

[8:17] as forecasted at the Portland airport.

[8:19] 69 the high for Troutdale and 69 for

[8:22] Hillsbor. Pretty impressive temperatures

[8:24] when you consider just how chilly it was

[8:26] this morning. We started the day at just

[8:28] 34 degrees in McMinnville. Now overnight

[8:31] tonight, temperatures aren't going to

[8:32] get quite this chilly. We'll be a couple

[8:34] degrees above this. So, you can see

[8:37] right now we're still at 58 degrees at

[8:38] the Portland airport, 58 in Troutdale,

[8:40] and 59 in Vancouver. We do have some

[8:43] more nice weather on the way. I'll have

[8:45] all the details on what you can expect

[8:46] for Mother's Day and for the work week

[8:48] coming up in your 7-day forecast. It

[8:51] will be a very special Mother's Day for

[8:53] a Milwaukee mother and her two children

[8:55] after a frightening experience. Last

[8:57] month, a gunman held Kelly Finley and

[8:59] her sons hostage demanding drugs. KPTV's

[9:02] Marilyn Deutsch has more on the story

[9:04] from the Fox 12 newsroom.

[9:06] Tonight, Kelly Finley tells us what

[9:08] happened and what she did to help keep

[9:10] herself and her children alive. Single

[9:12] mom Kelly Finley lived here in this

[9:14] Milwaukee neighborhood. Her parents live

[9:17] across the street, her aunt down the

[9:18] road, a good place to raise her kids,

[9:20] she thought until that is Tuesday, April

[9:23] 21st, when the neighbor next door barged

[9:26] into her house. She was getting ready to

[9:28] take her kids fishing. Bradley Michael

[9:30] Snell had a handgun.

[9:32] >> I barely got my swimsuit top on. I

[9:35] turned and he was there and the kids

[9:37] were there and he said, "I'm taking you

[9:40] and your kids hostage."

[9:41] >> Finley argued.

[9:42] >> That's when he put the gun to my head,

[9:43] said, "I'm serious."

[9:44] >> Finley says Bradley Snell forced her to

[9:46] call various doctor's offices

[9:48] andarmacies. He wanted drugs. She made

[9:51] those calls, explaining that she'd be

[9:53] killed if she didn't get Snell the drugs

[9:56] he wanted. A nurse and a pharmacist

[9:58] alerted the Clackamus County Sheriff's

[9:59] Office, which sent out its SWAT team.

[10:01] But all Finley knew is what was going on

[10:04] inside her house, and Snell was becoming

[10:06] more agitated. But Finley convinced the

[10:09] gunman to let her put her children in

[10:11] the bathroom. She told them to lie down

[10:13] in the tub and keep quiet. At one point,

[10:17] Snell went outside. That's when the SWAT

[10:19] team shot him. He later died at a local

[10:22] hospital. But back inside the house,

[10:24] Finley's children, still in the bathtub,

[10:27] heard the gunfire and thought their mom

[10:30] had been shot. That was I think the most

[10:32] traumatic thing it's been for them was

[10:34] just that little bit of unknowing.

[10:37] >> Finley and her children don't live in

[10:39] the house anymore. Her children too

[10:41] upset about those frightening two hours

[10:43] in April. But this Mother's Day, they

[10:46] will spend a special day out in the

[10:48] sunshine with their mom.

[10:50] >> Yeah, we're going fishing.

[10:52] >> After almost 3 weeks, the family will

[10:54] finally get to go on that delayed

[10:56] fishing trip. In the Fox 12 newsroom,

[10:58] Marilyn Deutsch, the 10:00 news. The

[11:01] 10:00 news is just getting started.

[11:03] >> Students go beyond bullying in a school

[11:06] locker room. Find out what happened

[11:07] inside the boy's room that led to four

[11:10] arrests.

[11:11] >> A con man almost got away with dozens of

[11:14] free cell phones. How his failure to

[11:16] proofread led him right into the arms of

[11:18] the law.

[11:19] >> Do you know what your teen does online?

[11:22] See how one mother uncovered her son's

[11:24] online drug operation. All by logging

[11:27] onto his MySpace page. It may be

[11:29] Mother's Day weekend, but some local

[11:31] fathers took center stage.

[11:36] >> I was crying on the staircase. Why these

[11:38] men put pride aside and dawned blonde

[11:41] wigs.

[11:43] >> It's going to be a nice Mother's Day.

[11:44] I'll let you know just how warm it's

[11:46] going to get coming up in your forecast.

[14:26] >> ALL NEW SIMPSONS

[14:27] >> Sunday at 8 on Fox 12 Oregon. Family Guy

[14:30] honors three of the greatest classics

[14:32] ever.

[14:33] >> Taste lipstick. Am I wearing lipstick?

[14:35] Not anymore.

[14:37] >> Sunday at 9 on Fox 12 Oregon.

[14:41] >> Well, Try is getting ready for the new

[14:43] Max Green Line. And today, try and local

[14:45] emergency responders took part in a

[14:47] safety drill on the Portland Mall at

[14:49] Southwest Pine and 6th Avenue. Now, the

[14:52] new Green Line will change lots of

[14:53] things about the mall like bus

[14:55] operations, signal systems, and where

[14:57] cars can be driven. The drill simulated

[14:59] an accident between a car and a bus and

[15:02] also testing crews readiness and

[15:04] response times.

[15:08] New details tonight in the case of a man

[15:10] accused of shooting a horse and leaving

[15:12] it to die. A Dashuites County jury found

[15:14] Russell Dan Willilifford of Portland

[15:17] guilty of animal abuse and criminal

[15:19] mischief. Investigators say in October,

[15:21] Willilifford shot the horse twice. It

[15:24] was later found wandering near Sisters.

[15:27] These are photos of the horse taken by

[15:28] Dashuites County Sheriff's deputies. The

[15:30] horse recovered. Bulifford's sentencing

[15:33] is set for June.

[15:37] To news from around the Northwest, two

[15:39] Washington men are accused of swiping

[15:41] bicycles and then selling them on the

[15:43] internet. The investigation began when a

[15:45] woman told Bellingham police that she

[15:46] thought she saw her stolen bike for sale

[15:48] on Craigslist. An officer went to the

[15:51] site and spotted the bike being offered

[15:53] for $1,500.

[15:55] Police then arrested the two young men

[15:56] on Thursday.

[15:58] >> Well, here's an interesting one for you

[15:59] tonight. Do you love bacon and vodka?

[16:02] Well, three Seattle entrepreneurs are

[16:04] creating a drink that's tailor made just

[16:06] for you. Bacon vodka recently hit

[16:08] storeshelves and bars around the Emerald

[16:10] City. For some, the combination of bacon

[16:13] and vodka might not sound too appealing,

[16:15] but those who've tried it say it's

[16:17] pretty good.

[16:18] >> It's It's amazing. I mean, you put them

[16:20] together and um I don't know, my first

[16:22] try of it, I I really enjoyed it. It's

[16:24] actually works really well.

[16:25] >> It's fantastic. I'm a vegetarian and I

[16:27] actually don't eat bacon, but this is

[16:30] fantastic.

[16:32] >> Well, the makers of bacon vodka say the

[16:34] base alcohol is made from Idaho

[16:36] potatoes. The company is hoping to soon

[16:38] distribute the drink into other parts of

[16:40] the country.

[16:44] Well, turning to the economic crisis

[16:46] tonight, the government has shut down a

[16:48] Washingtonbased bank. The FDIC

[16:50] immediately sold West Sound Bank to

[16:53] another area bank. And for KPTV tonight,

[16:56] Joel Moreno tells us what it means for

[16:58] customers.

[17:00] >> Closure notices greet customers at West

[17:02] Sound Bank. Inside, the FDIC is busy

[17:05] interviewing employees, running the

[17:07] books, and making sure financial

[17:08] statements are accurate.

[17:10] >> What we're trying to do is get to a good

[17:11] balance so that we can know what totals

[17:14] are for cash for all the assets the bank

[17:17] had on its books. Air4 took these

[17:19] pictures above the flagship in Breton,

[17:21] one of nine branches now closed. Banking

[17:24] officials say West Sound's aggressive

[17:26] lending practices just finally caught up

[17:28] with it.

[17:29] >> This bank did have tremendous asset

[17:31] issues, primarily related to lending

[17:33] that they undertook in construction and

[17:35] land development.

[17:36] >> The FDIC says the bank did a poor job of

[17:39] verifying the financial resources of its

[17:42] borrowers. When the national economy

[17:44] tanked, West Sound's House of Cards

[17:46] collapsed. because of the economy,

[17:48] people just were not able to pay the

[17:50] loans.

[17:50] >> Kitapat Bank plans to take over West

[17:52] Sound's nine branches come Monday, but

[17:55] won't be responsible for the bad loans.

[17:57] >> We're not taking the loans and um and we

[18:00] haven't purchased the bank. We are

[18:02] assuming the deposits.

[18:05] >> What Kitsapat Bank won't talk about is

[18:08] whether they plan to close branches and

[18:10] lay off employees because of the overlap

[18:12] between the two institutions. For now,

[18:14] they say debit cards will continue to

[18:16] work and people with checking and

[18:18] savings accounts can feel safe about

[18:20] their money.

[18:21] >> The customers can rest assured that they

[18:23] don't have any of their funds at risk.

[18:27] >> And that was Joel Moreno reporting. Now,

[18:29] West Sound reportedly lost $33 million

[18:32] in 2008. The only other Washingtonbased

[18:35] bank to fail has been the Bank of Clare

[18:37] County. The president says that American

[18:39] consumers shouldn't have to use a

[18:41] magnifying glass in a reference book in

[18:44] order to read credit card applications.

[18:46] Barack Obama used his weekly radio and

[18:48] internet address to focus on the credit

[18:50] card industry. He called on Congress to

[18:52] pass legislation intended to stop

[18:55] companies from imposing certain late

[18:57] fees. The House has passed a bill which

[18:59] outlaws retroactive rate increases and

[19:02] prevents companies from marketing cards

[19:03] to minors. A slightly different version

[19:06] awaits action by the full Senate.

[19:09] >> Americans know that they have a

[19:11] responsibility to live within their

[19:12] means and pay what they owe, but they

[19:15] also have a right not to get ripped off

[19:16] by the sudden rate hikes, unfair

[19:18] penalties, and hidden fees that have

[19:20] become all too common in our credit card

[19:22] industry.

[19:24] >> The president wants the final version on

[19:25] his desk by Memorial Day.

[19:29] Well, the 10:00 news goes local now

[19:31] where postal carriers are helping

[19:33] families in need. Today, they picked up

[19:35] more than 680,000

[19:37] pounds of food. We just now got that

[19:40] number in. The annual food drive is

[19:42] sponsored by the National Association of

[19:43] Letter Carriers, and last year, the

[19:45] group collected more than 1.5 million

[19:47] pounds of food throughout Oregon and

[19:49] Southwest Washington. The donations all

[19:52] go to the Oregon Food Bank Network. It

[19:55] excites me because I know that uh it

[19:58] goes to it goes to so many people and we

[20:01] hear all the time that the the food bank

[20:03] is is is giving out more food than it's

[20:05] coming in because so many people need it

[20:07] right now.

[20:08] >> And so far they're up from about 2% from

[20:10] last year. If you missed your letter

[20:12] carrier today, don't worry. You can

[20:13] still help a food drive by dropping off

[20:15] your donations to your local post office

[20:18] through Wednesday. Well, tonight there

[20:20] must be a local wig shop that sold out

[20:22] of the long blonde curly variety because

[20:25] dozens of men showed up at a Hillsboro

[20:28] mall mall with the same dew. Along with

[20:30] the fake hair, these brave souls

[20:32] squeezed into high heels and dresses and

[20:34] then staying their hearts out in front

[20:36] of complete strangers. But all of them

[20:38] agreed that the ordeal was worth it

[20:40] because it made their daughters happy.

[20:42] The performances were part of a contest

[20:44] to win tickets to the soldout Taylor

[20:46] Swift concert. And these weren't just

[20:48] any seats. The dads were vying for the

[20:50] front row along with backstage passes.

[20:55] >> I love my daughter immen without

[20:57] boundaries. So, uh, coming to this was

[21:00] just showing that cuz these shoes

[21:05] >> killer.

[21:07] >> The winning father also got treated to a

[21:09] prize package.

[21:10] >> Hopefully a foot massage. Yes.

[21:11] >> All right. Still ahead, it's not a site

[21:13] you see every day.

[21:14] >> Yeah. We'll tell you why a man walked

[21:16] all the way from Gresham to Lincoln City

[21:18] with a cross on his back.

[21:20] >> Plus, this is a website bargain hunters

[21:23] just can't afford to pass up. We're

[21:24] going to tell you where you can score

[21:25] everything from jewelry to leather

[21:27] jackets at rock bottom prices.

[21:30] >> The radar picture is empty right now,

[21:33] but we are going to have some rain to

[21:34] talk about in the forecast. I'll have

[21:36] all the details on when the wet weather

[21:37] arrives coming up in your forecast.

[21:41] You're watching the 10:00 news. First,

[21:43] live local.

[22:02] are unbeatable.

[22:03] >> Happy Mother's Day.

[22:05] >> So, you don't think we overdid it,

[22:07] right?

[22:08] >> No. Now that we're this plump, people

[22:09] are going to love us. Check this out.

[22:11] Padd ma'am, how'd you like some fresh

[22:13] Foster Farms plumpy chicken?

[22:15] >> You're not a Foster Farms chicken.

[22:17] You're all plumped up with salt water.

[22:20] So you weigh more and I pay more.

[22:22] >> Who wouldn't want to pay more for this?

[22:24] >> Uh-oh. Can I talk to you?

[22:25] >> Yeah. What do you need, buddy? Wow,

[22:27] you're throwing a lake.

[22:27] >> I'm a plumber. HE'S A PLUMPER.

[22:30] >> GORGON,

[22:31] >> SAY no to plumping. Foster Farms. Always

[22:33] natural. Always fresh.

[22:36] Southwest Washington Medical Center is

[22:38] one of three trauma centers serving

[22:40] Southwest Washington and Portland. The

[22:41] >> Southwest has been taking care of trauma

[22:44] and other critically ill patients for

[22:46] the last 20 years.

[22:47] >> While the most common traumas are head

[22:48] injuries, all trauma cases need

[22:50] immediate treatment.

[22:51] >> Our mission is to bring the greatest

[22:54] medical care as quickly as possible and

[22:56] to continue that care throughout the

[22:58] entire hospitalization and after

[23:00] discharge.

[23:01] >> Southwest Washington Medical Center,

[23:03] pioneering medicine.

[23:05] You could go to a department store and

[23:07] get this outfit for $102. Or you could

[23:10] go to Ross and get the same outfit plus

[23:12] the shoes, the handbag, the earrings,

[23:14] and the watch and still have money left

[23:17] over for a taxi. Ross, the savings are

[23:19] unbeatable.

[23:21] Still tonight, see what makes the Fox 12

[23:23] final cut. A case of bullying that went

[23:25] way too far. What police say four teens

[23:28] did to an underassman.

[23:29] >> How easy is it for teens to buy drugs

[23:31] online? One parent found out the hard

[23:33] way. And the recession hits home for the

[23:35] homeless as one city charges them for

[23:37] shelter. It's all ahead in the Fox 12

[23:40] final cut.

[23:41] >> So, do I watch what I eat? It's

[23:42] important for me to watch what I eat.

[23:43] >> You're very spelt.

[23:45] >> I don't make up the rules. I'm just

[23:46] telling you. You are what you eat.

[23:48] >> Exactly. You can. Yes.

[23:50] >> I try to take care of myself.

[23:51] >> Yeah. And of course it makes a big

[23:53] difference.

[23:53] >> Of course. Yeah. I want to be my best.

[23:55] Who wants to underachieve? So, I fill up

[23:56] with Chevron with Techron. Techron,

[23:58] baby. And no other gasoline has more

[24:00] cleaning power. Yeah, that's right. He

[24:02] watches what he eats in the mirror.

[24:05] >> No gasoline has more cleaning power than

[24:07] Chevron with Techron.

[24:09] >> You're a sport guy. I know that.

[24:11] >> JR Furniture Delta Park lost our lease

[24:14] and is forced to sell out all inventory

[24:29] sellout end soon. So bring your truck,

[24:31] bring your ropes to any JR location and

[24:33] tie down the biggest savings ever

[24:38] >> discover the difference.

[24:43] >> In your consumer watch, sellers are

[24:45] finding a new way to make their homes

[24:47] look appealing by having someone live

[24:50] there while it's on the market. It's

[24:51] called staging, and some companies can

[24:53] now connect homeowners with home

[24:55] managers. Those managers live in the

[24:58] homes for a small price, but they have

[25:00] to supply the furniture and be ready to

[25:02] move at a moment's notice. The cost is

[25:04] usually three4s of 1% of the listing

[25:07] price.

[25:08] >> Well, when kids are watching TV, they're

[25:10] also probably being stuffed with

[25:12] advertisements for junk food. That's

[25:14] according to a new study of commercials

[25:16] in 11 countries. Researchers found ads

[25:19] featuring fast food, confectionary, and

[25:21] highfat dairy foods increased during

[25:24] times when kids are most likely to be

[25:26] parked right in front of the TV. The US

[25:28] and Germany had the most junk food

[25:31] commercials. Researchers say children

[25:33] see around 2 to 4,000 advertisements for

[25:36] unhealthy foods on TV every year. Well,

[25:39] bargain hunters and garage sale gurus,

[25:42] brace yourself. There's a relatively

[25:44] unknown website where everything from

[25:46] jewelry to leather jackets is available

[25:48] to buy and the bidding starts cheap.

[25:51] It's called propertyroom.com.

[25:53] The site is known as basically the eBay

[25:56] for law enforcement. Agencies normally

[25:58] sell unclaimed items taken in criminal

[26:00] investigations and parking lot auctions,

[26:02] but a retired detective came up with the

[26:04] idea to put the sale online a few years

[26:07] ago.

[26:10] After lots of sunshine today, we do have

[26:12] some rain showing up in the 7-day

[26:14] forecast. I'll let you know when it

[26:15] arrives. Coming up, major fires continue

[26:18] to burn in Southern California, forcing

[26:20] hundreds of people to evacuate their

[26:22] homes. We'll have the latest on the

[26:23] battle to control the blaze.

[26:26] >> Investigators may have found a

[26:27] University of Georgia professor accused

[26:29] of killing his wife and two other

[26:31] people. How his Jeep provided a major

[26:33] clue.

[26:34] >> When you're away from the TV, you can

[29:13] >> HEY, GLAD TO SEE YOU. STEP RIGHT UP AND

[29:15] TRY THIS gorgeous sirloin. I've seen

[29:16] prime rib never looked this good, even

[29:18] in its prime. Applewood smoked,

[29:20] specially seasoned, and finished to your

[29:22] taste over an open flame. Just doesn't

[29:24] get any better. Wait, I'm lying. It does

[29:26] if you have it with my delicious lemon

[29:28] dill salmon served cedar plank style or

[29:30] you guessed it, flame finished on the

[29:34] serving more than ever before. I kid you

[29:36] not.

[29:42] >> Well, fire season 2009 has a fire crews

[29:45] busy and it's forced hundreds of people

[29:47] from their homes in California.

[29:49] >> But there is good news tonight.

[29:50] Thousands were told they can head back

[29:52] to their homes, some of which will be

[29:54] there, while others burned to the ground

[29:55] by vicious wildfire. Caseysteagle is

[29:58] working the fire scene in Santa Barbara

[30:00] for KPTV.

[30:02] >> You're good to go.

[30:03] >> Thank you, sir.

[30:03] >> All right. Have a happy day.

[30:05] >> Air support from above. A DC10 dropping

[30:08] fire retardant on thousands of acres of

[30:10] charred brush over Santa Barbara,

[30:12] California. At least 80 homes have

[30:14] burned to the ground in a 13 square mile

[30:17] area. Moist air giving firefighters an

[30:20] opportunity to knock back the flames.

[30:23] Many of the 30,000 residents asked to

[30:25] leave their homes now getting the green

[30:28] light to return.

[30:29] >> This is obviously being done in stages.

[30:31] We have a significant number of people

[30:33] who have been evacuated and we don't

[30:35] want everybody rushing to get there at

[30:37] the same time and have huge traffic

[30:38] jams.

[30:39] >> Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visiting

[30:41] a shelter for evacuees, praising the

[30:43] thousands of firefighters working in the

[30:45] trenches to save homes. You know, I feel

[30:48] really bad for the kind of damage it has

[30:50] caused to so many people. That's why I

[30:52] wanted to come out here. But the fire

[30:54] officials, I want to thank the

[30:55] firefighters for the great work that

[30:56] they're doing.

[30:57] >> While the governor offers comfort to

[30:59] residents, another star lending his

[31:01] support, actor Rob Low on hand to help

[31:03] friends burned out of their home.

[31:05] >> I don't know how you ever really recover

[31:07] from it, but you also see get people

[31:09] pull together. you see this this amazing

[31:11] response here from the Red Cross and the

[31:13] volunteers and and on that side of it,

[31:15] it sort of uh makes you feel good.

[31:17] >> It is a bittersweet time. Thousands will

[31:20] return to their homes untouched while

[31:21] dozens of others will return to this

[31:24] their homes burned to the ground.

[31:26] Firefighters still working to douse

[31:27] hotspots to prevent any further

[31:29] flare-ups. In Santa Barbara, California,

[31:32] Caseysteagle, Fox News,

[31:35] >> California isn't the only place dealing

[31:36] with fires tonight. In Florida, a quick

[31:39] moving brush fire damaged two homes near

[31:41] Tampa. Smoke from the fires could be

[31:43] seen for miles. Authorities evacuated

[31:46] several neighborhoods as fire crews work

[31:48] to control the flames. At last check,

[31:50] the fire was about 25% contained. The

[31:53] cause of the fire is under

[31:55] investigation.

[31:57] >> Well, Portland, as we all know, is a

[31:59] town that loves its dogs, but if you

[32:01] think you might saw a few more than

[32:02] usual today, trust me, you weren't

[32:04] imagining things, especially downtown.

[32:06] Thousands of dog lovers and of course

[32:07] their pets hit Tom McCall Waterfront

[32:09] Park today for the 22nd annual doggy

[32:12] dash. They walked, they ran, some even

[32:15] rode in carts, but it was all to benefit

[32:16] the Oregon Humane Society. Lots of dogs

[32:19] sported some colorful fashions as well,

[32:21] even despite the warm weather.

[32:23] >> We tried to put a scarf on her this

[32:25] morning and you couldn't see it. She's

[32:26] got too much hair. So, um, we might go

[32:30] down to the fountain and go swimming.

[32:31] She likes the water. It's good way for

[32:33] them to socialize and and uh meet other

[32:36] dogs, meet interesting people.

[32:38] >> Well, of course, getting there was part

[32:40] of the fun to help out. Try welcomed

[32:42] Dash participants and their dogs onto

[32:44] the bus and Max trains.

[32:48] >> And the weather couldn't have been

[32:49] better for it. Fox 12 meteorologist

[32:50] Stephanie Krellitch is here to tell us

[32:52] if the sunshine will last for Mother's

[32:53] Day tomorrow.

[32:54] >> We're crossing our fingers

[32:55] >> a little bit. We'll have a little bit in

[32:57] the first part of the day and then the

[32:58] clouds kind of move in, thicken up and

[33:00] we have some rain showing up just in

[33:02] time for the work week, but Mother's Day

[33:03] is not looking bad. So, mostly dry

[33:06] unless you're out along the coast and

[33:07] even then it's going to be a mostly dry

[33:09] Sunday. Let's take a look at some

[33:11] weather video. This shot by Brent

[33:12] Weisberg. He was out in the gorge

[33:14] covering a news story. He stopped to

[33:16] pick up some video near Cascade Logs. It

[33:18] was a beautiful day in the gorge. Little

[33:20] bit of a breeze. Lots of folks hitting

[33:23] the water today in the gorge area and

[33:25] also uh here in the Portland metro area.

[33:27] If you were downtown today, you saw lots

[33:30] of folks on the Wamut. And as you can

[33:32] see uh just a beautiful day out on the

[33:35] Columbia. Let's show you our high

[33:36] temperatures today. We made it to 70° in

[33:39] Portland. This is 5° above the average

[33:42] for today. And tomorrow is going to be

[33:44] even warmer. Even though we'll get

[33:45] cloudier conditions for the afternoon,

[33:47] we're going to see temperatures a few

[33:49] degrees warmer than today. Okay, we made

[33:51] it to 69 in Salem, 66 in Eugene. East of

[33:54] the Cascades, also a nice day. 74 in the

[33:56] Dallas, 68 in Pendleton, and 68 in

[33:59] Lrand. Temperatures currently still on

[34:02] the mild side. Overnight lows tonight

[34:04] are going to drop into the 40s, but

[34:05] we're still at 58 at the Portland

[34:08] airport, 61 in the Dallas, and 53 in

[34:11] Pendleton. Mainly clear skies. We're

[34:12] going to start to see some clouds

[34:13] creeping in along the coast. Otherwise,

[34:15] though, we're pretty much cloud-free

[34:17] across the board. It's going to get very

[34:18] chilly in eastern Oregon. Uh

[34:20] temperatures dropping to just below

[34:22] freezing. The satellite picture shows

[34:25] that next round of moisture still

[34:27] sitting offshore. This is going to creep

[34:29] in for tomorrow and thicken up the

[34:30] clouds during the day. It looks like the

[34:32] rain will hold off until the late night

[34:34] hours tomorrow in the Portland metro

[34:36] area. We'll stay dry throughout the day

[34:38] and through a good part of the evening.

[34:40] Then as we get into about this time

[34:42] tomorrow night, we'll be looking at that

[34:43] rain starting to move into the Wamtt

[34:45] Valley. They'll arrive a little bit

[34:47] earlier out along the Oregon coast. As

[34:49] you can see, tomorrow around noon, the

[34:50] clouds start to move in. They'll

[34:52] increase throughout the course of the

[34:53] day and then about 24 hours from now,

[34:56] we'll start to see the threat of rain

[34:57] moving on in. And we'll continue to see

[34:59] rain off and on throughout the day on

[35:01] Monday. It'll also be breezy. So, kind

[35:03] of a spring-like wet day on Monday. And

[35:06] the showers continue on Tuesday. We have

[35:08] several chances for rain showing up

[35:10] during the work week, but we'll get a

[35:11] nice little break Tuesday evening into a

[35:14] good part of the day on Wednesday. The

[35:16] forecast now east of the Cascades, it's

[35:18] going to start off sunny. Great weather

[35:20] to uh get outside, enjoy the sunshine,

[35:22] maybe go fishing, uh do something

[35:25] outdoors, something maybe with mom. It

[35:27] is Mother's Day tomorrow. I should

[35:29] mention that in case you uh have

[35:31] forgotten, don't want to forget your mom

[35:32] tomorrow. It is Mother's Day. Partly

[35:34] cloudy skies up on the slopes. Mount

[35:36] Hood tomorrow seeing a freezing level

[35:38] way up at 9,000 ft. So, the path

[35:40] conditions looking good if you need to

[35:42] uh cross the Cascades. As you head up

[35:45] west of the Cascades, temperatures a

[35:48] little bit warmer than today, but it's

[35:49] going to be kind of a grayer day. The

[35:51] clouds will increase as we move

[35:53] throughout the afternoon out along the

[35:54] coast. The clouds will be arriving

[35:56] sooner, and we'll see that threat of

[35:57] rain during the evening hours. Doesn't

[35:59] look like we're going to get the rain in

[36:00] the Portland area until uh later

[36:03] tomorrow night. So, a dry looking

[36:05] Mother's Day with temperatures above

[36:07] average for this time of year. We'll be

[36:08] in the low to mid70s, at least a couple

[36:11] degrees above where we were today. We'll

[36:13] have a little bit of a breeze, but it's

[36:14] going to be much breezier as we head

[36:16] into the first part of the work week.

[36:18] Increase in clouds on the east side of

[36:20] town. Still a warm day for early May.

[36:24] And we start things off not quite as

[36:26] chilly as we did this morning. Expect a

[36:28] low tonight around 47°. We'll be at 60

[36:30] by noon time. And you can see that

[36:32] threat of rain moving in at around this

[36:34] time tomorrow. Here is your first live

[36:36] local 7-day forecast. Happy Mother's Day

[36:39] for tomorrow. We get nice weather.

[36:41] Breezy, wet conditions arrive for the

[36:43] beginning of the work week. Tuesday, the

[36:44] showers continue. Nice little break on

[36:46] Wednesday, but a small chance of showers

[36:48] Thursday through Saturday. You can get

[36:51] weather anytime on our website at

[36:52] kptv.com. Stephanie Ortman will have the

[36:55] latest on your forecast tomorrow on Good

[36:56] Day Oregon.

[36:59] And tonight's final cut. Unlikely

[37:01] culprits. A middle school student comes

[37:03] forward saying he was sexually and

[37:05] brutally assaulted in the locker room.

[37:07] Cops say the unlikely culprits are four

[37:10] other teens. A 15-year police veteran is

[37:14] another unlikely culprit accused of

[37:16] dealing drugs. Tales on his connection

[37:18] with a marijuana distribution ring. Who

[41:09] Stand by the final cut in three, two,

[41:11] one. Q.

[41:12] >> And the final cut begins with news

[41:14] across America tonight as a Florida

[41:16] boater missing for several days is

[41:19] describing his frightening experience.

[41:21] Coast Guard crews found that man

[41:22] yesterday after he set off for a fishing

[41:25] trip on Wednesday and hadn't been seen

[41:27] since. The man told the Coast Guard he

[41:29] ran into trouble when his paddle broke,

[41:31] stranding him in some bushes right along

[41:33] the river. Or as if being stuck weren't

[41:35] enough, the man who's a diabetic had no

[41:37] food or water.

[41:40] >> Well, the paddle broke on the way in cuz

[41:44] the water's only about this deep. Talk

[41:46] about being up the creek without a

[41:48] paddle. I left all my damn food on the

[41:51] dock and my cooler. I didn't even bring

[41:55] bug spray.

[41:57] Well, despite the scary experience, the

[42:00] man says he plans to go on another

[42:02] fishing trip as soon as he recovers.

[42:05] Police say they have found the body of a

[42:08] University of Georgia professor accused

[42:10] of killing his wife and two other

[42:12] people. George Zincan disappeared two

[42:14] weeks ago. This is filed video of the

[42:17] search for him. Now, investigators say

[42:19] Zincan's body was covered by dirt and

[42:21] brush. Now, just last week, crews found

[42:23] his wrecked Jeep in a ravine. Officers

[42:26] believe he shot his wife and two men

[42:28] outside a community theater.

[42:30] Investigators are now trying to

[42:31] determine exactly how Zincan died.

[42:33] >> The final cut heads to Florida now with

[42:35] a case of bullying that went way too far

[42:38] at a middle school. Police arrested 14

[42:40] boys who are accused of sexually

[42:42] battering another student. Investigators

[42:45] say the boys used a broomstick and

[42:48] hockey stick. For KPTV, Gloria Gomez has

[42:51] a story.

[42:52] It's an unthinkable crime committed by

[42:55] the most unlikely perpetrators. Four

[42:58] boys between the ages of 14 and 15 years

[43:00] old are accused of brutally assaulting a

[43:03] 13-year-old boy at school. Investigators

[43:06] say the attack happened at Walker Middle

[43:08] School in Odessa. Detectives say on

[43:10] April 30th, the boys attacked the victim

[43:13] in a school locker room. They say two

[43:15] boys held the 13-year-old down, while

[43:18] detectives say the other two sexually

[43:20] battered the boy with a broomstick and a

[43:23] hockey stick. It took several days

[43:25] before school officials were even aware

[43:27] there was a problem. After nearly two

[43:29] months of being picked on and harassed,

[43:31] detectives say the victim went to school

[43:33] officials. An investigation into

[43:35] bullying was underway when school

[43:36] officials realized they were dealing

[43:38] with something much, much more serious.

[43:41] On Wednesday morning when we started

[43:43] talking with the boys, some of the

[43:44] details started to come out. We got the

[43:46] school resource deputy involved

[43:48] immediately. So at that point, law

[43:49] enforcement is involved.

[43:51] >> Parents at Walker Middle School were

[43:52] told on Thursday, many expressing

[43:54] disbelief and sorrow.

[43:56] >> When I heard about it, it it really

[43:59] shocked me and, you know, my heart just

[44:01] goes out to the the family and really

[44:04] both, you know, all the families

[44:05] involved.

[44:06] >> 13-year-old Kyle Sneed is a seventh

[44:08] grader at Walker Middle. It's very

[44:10] shocking to be like somewhere around

[44:12] here cuz it's not really that bad stuff.

[44:16] >> Again, that was Gloria Gomez reporting

[44:18] to Massachusetts now where a police

[44:20] officer was confronted by his

[44:22] colleagues. Officer Carlos Bergus is now

[44:24] facing charges in a wide-ranging drug

[44:27] investigation that began last year. The

[44:29] 15-year veteran is one of 17 people

[44:32] indicted in federal court in connection

[44:34] with a marijuana distribution ring.

[44:36] According to the US Attorney's Office,

[44:38] wiretaps of one defendant revealed that

[44:40] officer Bergus was involved. He is now

[44:43] on unpaid administrative leave.

[44:45] >> Parents in Colorado angry about a high

[44:48] school project they say is teaching kids

[44:50] to be terrorists. A woman says her

[44:53] daughter came home the other day saying

[44:55] she had two minutes to come up with a

[44:56] plot for an act of terrorism. A teacher

[44:59] assigned the project to more than 100

[45:01] freshmen. That teacher also says the

[45:04] assignment was meant to illustrate an

[45:06] act of terrorism by a foreign government

[45:08] on American soil. The school district

[45:10] superintendent says students may have

[45:12] misunderstood the assignment.

[45:14] >> To ask them to use their creative

[45:17] energies to come up with a plot for an

[45:19] act of terrorism is is very ludicrous.

[45:24] >> Well, the school district later decided

[45:25] to collect the assignment from students

[45:27] and destroy the papers.

[45:34] Well, police departments across the

[45:35] country spending more time patrolling

[45:37] social networking sites because of

[45:39] tonight's high-tech threat.

[45:40] Investigators say there is now a growing

[45:42] number of teenagers using the internet

[45:45] for illegal activities like drug

[45:47] dealing. For example, one Phoenix mother

[45:50] says she discovered her son was selling

[45:52] ecstasy through his MySpace page. She

[45:55] reported it to deputies who began a

[45:56] sting operation that netted 10 suspected

[45:59] online drug dealers. Investigators say

[46:01] they had a combined clientele of 500

[46:05] teens and young adults. MySpace says it

[46:07] has offered assistance with that case.

[46:11] People in Missouri are starting to

[46:13] assess the damage following a series of

[46:15] powerful storms that killed at least

[46:17] three people and left thousands without

[46:20] power. The National Weather Service says

[46:22] it received multiple reports of

[46:23] tornadoes from one end of the state to

[46:26] the other. At least two touched down

[46:28] yesterday morning, destroying dozens of

[46:30] buildings and damaging hundreds more.

[46:32] The governor declared a state of

[46:34] emergency. The same systems also swept

[46:37] through Kentucky, killing two people and

[46:39] injuring at least eight others. The

[46:41] victim's bodies were found in a pond

[46:43] near a mobile home community. Officials

[46:45] blame a tornado with winds of 120 mph

[46:49] that touched down yesterday. Some 150

[46:51] homes were damaged and destroyed. Then

[46:54] today, a line of thunderstorms rolled

[46:56] through the area. Kucky's governor also

[46:59] declared a state of emergency.

[47:05] Not even the homeless can escape the

[47:06] high price of staying the night in New

[47:08] York City during this economic crisis.

[47:10] The mayor's administration has begun

[47:12] charging rent to families who live in

[47:15] publiclyun shelters but have income from

[47:17] jobs. The policy is based on a 1997

[47:20] state law that was not enforced until

[47:23] last week. Rent amounts vary based on

[47:25] factors that include family size and

[47:28] what shelter is being used, but the

[47:30] price should not exceed 50% of a

[47:32] family's income.

[47:38] Well, as we brought you at the top of

[47:40] the show, we've learned tonight a

[47:41] Washington state man died from the flu

[47:43] last week. However, it was only reported

[47:46] today. They say this Nomish County man

[47:48] had an underlying heart condition.

[47:50] However, Costa Rica is now also

[47:53] confirming Central America's first death

[47:55] in the H1N1 outbreak. The country's

[47:57] health minister isn't saying much about

[47:59] the man except that he was 53 years old

[48:01] and died this morning. Meanwhile, the

[48:03] death toll is rising in Mexico. Today,

[48:06] health officials reported three more

[48:07] deaths, bringing the total there to 48.

[48:11] Worldwide, there are nearly 3500

[48:13] confirmed cases of H1N1. Schools in

[48:17] Mexico, though, preparing to reopen

[48:19] after the H1N1 outbreak shut them down.

[48:21] School workers are now busy cleaning and

[48:24] sanitizing classrooms and supplies. Many

[48:26] of the country's churches, stadiums, and

[48:28] businesses that all closed during the

[48:30] outbreak are also starting to open back

[48:33] up.

[48:36] Well, the

[48:37] >> goes local now and catches up with the

[48:39] man set to walk more than 100 miles

[48:41] barefoot while raising money for

[48:42] charity. KPTV's Brent Weisber is live in

[48:45] News Control with more on this story.

[48:47] Brent,

[48:47] >> Andrew Free says he hopes to raise more

[48:49] than $2,000, money that he says will go

[48:52] to a mission trip in South Africa. So to

[48:54] raise that money, Andrew and a friend

[48:56] are walking the distance. They say

[48:58] they're on a trek to that started

[49:00] Wednesday and eventually they'll end up

[49:02] in Lincoln City. He's walking barefoot

[49:04] and in the process he is carrying a

[49:06] giant cross to gain attention to his

[49:08] cause. These are some of the pictures of

[49:10] Andrew and his friends have taken during

[49:12] his trek. Tonight we caught up with them

[49:14] and they'll tell us what they do in

[49:16] Africa.

[49:18] >> But we could be doing like uh

[49:26] It's basically whatever the need is.

[49:38] Reporting live in News Control Tonight,

[49:40] we're on Weisber, the 10:00 news.

[49:44] >> Well, Hollywood is buzzing tonight about

[49:45] Jimmy Fallon. There's one more thing he

[49:48] can put on his resume now. College

[49:50] graduate. The comedian and talk show

[49:52] host finally got his bachelor's degree

[49:54] in communications 14 years after he left

[49:57] school for showbiz. Fallon graduated

[49:59] from College of St. Rose. He left school

[50:02] 14 years ago with only one semester

[50:04] left.

[50:06] >> Well, Donald Trump is set to decide

[50:08] whether Miss California is going to be

[50:11] fired. Pageant officials believe the

[50:13] title's current holder, Carrie Pison,

[50:15] violated her contract by not telling

[50:17] them she posed topless for pictures a

[50:19] few years ago. Well, Trump is owner of

[50:21] the MissUSA pageant. And last month,

[50:23] Miss California also raised eyebrows by

[50:26] speaking out during the big contest
